NYC DOE Veteran's Day
Kids are off way too much. There is no reason to be off on Veterans day. They would be better off at school learning about what Veterans day is or have the school do some sort of community service for the day. Election day is another day that is a joke to have off, but it is a necessity because our local government will not allow the polling places to change. There is no reason why a school should be a polling place.

I actually don't understand why schools would close today. I don't understand why they're closed on election day. Are kids voting?
I don't know a single adult who is off from work on either election day or Veteran's day. I guess some teachers are off, but that's it.
I'm so grateful that my DD's daycare is open on most of these holidays because I don't know what I would do otherwise.
My DD"s school is a polling place so they can't have the students in the school on election day when the school is wide open to the public. But Her teachers had a superintendent conference that day- they were not off.
I used to think that was the reason for Election Day too (at least these days) , but I know at least my school holds primaries and the school is open for that. Every other day of the year the school it buttoned up like ft Knox (as it should be) , but on primary day multiple doors have to be open and anyone and their uncle can just walk in without showing ID. Not to mention the kids can't use the gym that day (it is usually nice out so not the worst but it is still annoying).
Yup our district also. This happens in every district that uses schools as a polling place.
They pulled voting out of our elementary schools but, still have it in the high school.
The kids are off but, it's one of our teacher in-service days so teachers are not off.
Usually both days don't fall in the same week, it's really annoying to have both a Tuesday and Friday off.
The kindergarten classes did an assembly for Veterans last Thursday- it was adorable and really helped them understand the meaning of Veteran's Day.

I actually think that it is more likely that a child will actually observe the significance of Veteran's Day if they are in school today because it is likely the teachers will speak about it. I can almost guarantee that if they were not in school today they would not even give it a thought about why they aren't in school
I agree. I'd hope teachers are taking the time to explain the significance of the day and the sacrifices Veteran's have made/continue to make everyday.
I always do and include pictures of a friend killed in war. Can be quite emotional for me. But middle school kids/high school kids do not understand really. They are so out of touch. Had kids laugh as I had tears in my eyes talking about Barton being killed. Parents need to start this at home and do it very early.

A NYC teacher friend of mine also posted about this and is outraged, as am I.
This is a federal holiday and is observed today even though the actual holiday is tomorrow.
What exactly are you outraged about? Many, many people work on Veterans Day. Teachers are not employees of the federal govt. There is no legal requirement that schools close on Veterans Day.
Outraged over the lack of respect for veterans by a city agency. If its an HR reg that pp spoke about, then it needs to be changed.
That day should be observed as it is when the holiday falls on a week day.
The holiday is OBSERVED for a reason.

I’m a DOE teacher and daughter of a Veteran and I’m outraged that we aren’t observing the holiday.
As others are as well. Like me (i'm not a teacher but a daughter of a veteran). Still outraged.

It’s not about the DOE not wanting to observe the holiday. It’s been in the HR regs for years and years that if a federal holiday falls on a Saturday we do not get the day. However, if it falls on a Sunday, it is observed the following day.
Yeah I don’t think it was considered a federal holiday for Friday, I think Saturday. Only Long Island schools it seems had off. DH is a government employee and worker. Banks., post offices etc all open Friday but closed Saturday on the actual day

Re: NYC DOE Veteran's Day
We're in CT and our district is always open on Veterans Day. The schools have assemblies and invite family members who are Veterans to attend. I'm fine with schools being open. I think a lot of kids do more to honor Veterans and/or learn about the holiday by having Veterans Day activities in school than having the day off.
