I actually don't understand why schools would close today. I don't understand why they're closed on election day. Are kids voting?
I don't know a single adult who is off from work on either election day or Veteran's day. I guess some teachers are off, but that's it.
I'm so grateful that my DD's daycare is open on most of these holidays because I don't know what I would do otherwise.
My DD"s school is a polling place so they can't have the students in the school on election day when the school is wide open to the public. But Her teachers had a superintendent conference that day- they were not off.
That's exactly why schools are closed on Election Day.
When I was a kid, our schools were polling places and they didn't close (started closing sometime when I was in JR or HS) and it was a giant pain in the ass with people walking through the school and I think they get nervous with kids walking around.
And in NYC its the same, the teachers report

I actually think that it is more likely that a child will actually observe the significance of Veteran's Day if they are in school today because it is likely the teachers will speak about it. I can almost guarantee that if they were not in school today they would not even give it a thought about why they aren't in school
I’m sorry, but speak for yourself. I teach my kids about honoring veterans, both past and present. Doing a worksheet at school, to me, isn’t honoring anyone. I prefer hands on activities and was very surprised to see my kids had school today.

We are spending the day with family that are veterans on the day, but we always do something for local veterans as well. It’s honestly my fault that I didn’t look at the school calendar, bc I would have planned better, but I really assumed they had today off.

You don't need school off to teach your kids about honoring veterans. You don't even need it to be on Veteran's Day. You can do that any day. I don't wait for Mother's Day to call my mom and be special with her.

I agree. I'd hope teachers are taking the time to explain the significance of the day and the sacrifices Veteran's have made/continue to make everyday.

I don’t believe that speaking is the same as doing, so while my kids are very aware and grateful to those who did serve or are serving everyday, we aren’t able to set aside time to actively show them our thanks everyday. So on the holidays we actively show our thanks, because normally with 4 kids they are home from school and sports are cancelled as well. We would have never been able to put over 200 flags at veteran grave sights on Memorial Day if they didn’t have off of school in may. We were still able to make the most of today by delivering desserts to the local Vfws, but my main reason for even responding to this was the fact so many people lean on teachers to teach our children everything, and that’s just not how I feel as a parent.

NYC DOE Veteran's Day
Our school had a great assembly about veterans day. Poems, songs , handmade pipes presented to veterans... We recognized the day. But we do it every year, whether we have it off our not.

Ah, ok. I don't remember my school being closed when I was a kid and I always voted in a church (no school attached) so I didn't realize. That makes sense now.

Luckily for you then your children are off on Veterans Day which is Saturday. So now should schools be closed the day before holidays as well so that parents can do extra things with their children.

I only responded to your post bc you said if kids had off they wouldn’t even think about why they were, and that’s why I said speak for yourself. If my kids had off, we would have done more, maybe you wouldn’t and that’s fine, but don’t speak for others. And no I wasn’t upset they didn’t have off, I simply said I was surprised.

For someone who doesn’t like people speaking for others I would appreciate you not make any assumptions about what I do and do not do with my children. Those who know me know that I am extremely thoughtful of others and teach my kids to be thankful, appreciative, kind and thoughtful children all the time and not just on holidays

I used to think that was the reason for Election Day too (at least these days) , but I know at least my school holds primaries and the school is open for that. Every other day of the year the school it buttoned up like ft Knox (as it should be) , but on primary day multiple doors have to be open and anyone and their uncle can just walk in without showing ID. Not to mention the kids can't use the gym that day (it is usually nice out so not the worst but it is still annoying).

It’s not about the DOE not wanting to observe the holiday. It’s been in the HR regs for years and years that if a federal holiday falls on a Saturday we do not get the day. However, if it falls on a Sunday, it is observed the following day.

Yup our district also. This happens in every district that uses schools as a polling place.

What exactly are you outraged about? Many, many people work on Veterans Day. Teachers are not employees of the federal govt. There is no legal requirement that schools close on Veterans Day.

NYC DOE Veteran's Day
I was surprised, but not angry. A friend of mine lives in WI, I have family in CT. Their kids have school even if Veterans Day falls on a weekday. A lot of these days off are a NY/NJ thing.
