Which plan do you have and do you like it?

Trying to decide between GHI & HIP. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: NYC Employees - Health Insurance

I like GHI because it's a PPO vs an HMO like HIP.
We can see any doctor or specialist we want in the plan- with no referrals.

Same.

My DH has worked for the city for over 12 years now and at the time he got on the job there was no comparison between the two. There have been some changes though recently that are making HIP more attractive (I don't know what they are though - he tends to bring this stuff up at the worst possible time for me to actually pay close attention).

I am not an NYC employee but I do have HIP. While it's annoying to have to get referrals and stuff like that, I do not have to pay a single copay which has been fabulous since I've been in and out of dr's offices and the ER 3x since March! I have HIP Prime.

I did have the optional rider for a few years but I dropped it after I got prescription benefits at a better price through my union.

Ghi with optional rider allows you to see out of network if you must

Re: NYC Employees - Health Insurance (one more ques)

we have ghi... me personally, i'd rather not have to get referrals. we see too many specialists to have to get a referral every time. i had vytra previously and the referral thing drove me up a wall, which is why i switched to ghi.
i don't think we have the optional rider. i forget nowChat Icon

We have GHI. We also submit our co-pays through the PBA for reimbursement, so we get partial repayment of them Chat Icon

I chose HIP only because it was what the majority of my doctors took and I didn't want to switch doctors. The referrals are annoying, but I've been lucky as they have approved extensive testing I have needed during my pregnancy. I see 4 different doctors every 4 weeks and not having a copay has been WONDERFUL!

Re: NYC Employees - Health Insurance (one more ques)

DH did pay for the high option rider- it didn't cost much and he felt it was a good safety net.
I can say we never really used it- excpet when I had surgery and the surgeon was considered out of network- unbeknownest to us
The high option rider paid him a little more than he would have gotten paid without it.
He accepted what they gave and went away...

I do not have this plan, but my dad and brothers do. They all have GHI with the rider. It is EXCELLENT coverage.

Not a NYC employee but I had a couple of conversations with doctors about 2 years ago when my insurance changed to emblemhealth GHI. They told me to make sure we got the GHI over HIP option. They said a lot if doctors and a lot if better doctors take various GHI plans but fewer doctors and sone more clinic types take HIP. I suggest before you decide maybe check your doctors and see which ones they take. Otherwise if you pick one and then find out the doctors you like take one plan over the other you won't be annoyed later (good advice no matter what plans you are looking at).

Re: NYC Employees - Health Insurance (one more ques)

I have HIP and love that I dont have to pay a dime for anything. Yes, I have to get referrals for specialists but I dont mind, its worth it to me.
I had knee surgery last year. Between the dr. visits, MRI's, x-rays and the surgery itself. I paid $0.
