I am not a teacher but what do you expect them to do...isn't the rule supposed to be a certain # of days in session per year? Would you rather they add on at the end of the year? Just curious. They have to be made up somehow...no?
Last year when Irene devastated upstate communities (flooding rivers) New York state put through a 10-day grace. They didn't have to give back days.
I guess downstate doesn't get afforded the same compassion...even though there are communities in this area where schools are still barely functioning.

It is what it is.
The UFT posted a Q and A about the decision making process. It's just too bad all those years of working a longer school year couldn't have rolled over to this year!

The UFT posted a Q and A about the decision making process. It's just too bad all those years of working a longer school year couldn't have rolled over to this year!

 They addressed every option my co-workers and I discussed today. All of us were wondering why we couldn't use Brooklyn/Queens day or MLK day. Now we have our answers.

Our district hasn't made an official call yet but we've been told to expect to lose all or part of Feb break.

What annoys me about this whole thing (and im speaking from a teachers perspective) is the NYC DOE. We were only off 4 days. We were not off 10 like many LI districts. Every year NYC teachers/kids have to come to school when LI and other schools all have off for snow storms. Meanwhile when LI and other schools don't use snow days, they get extra days off throughout the year for not using snow days. If NYC doesnt use snow days, we get nothing. So yes it annoys me that we have to make up the 4 days when its rare that we ever even get off for major storms. and I would think considering how bad we were all hit with this storm, that we would have been forgiven for these days.
And yes, I know that I probably sound obnoxious because most jobs don't get the time off that teachers do and I understand that, im just venting my frustration with the doe.

My child attends a LI district, and they made their decision re: make up days the Friday after the hurricane (the 1st Friday they were back to school)
Right away we were notified the kids will make up their 6 days lost by losing Wed-Fri of winter break and the Thurs, Fri, Tue from memorial day (which we usually lose if we use snow days anyway!)
As a parent, I feel my child belongs in school and shouldnt feel pressured to make up the work; so Im happy with the decision.
I also think that for parents/teachers who did the right thing scheduling their vacations in advance around the school calendar (and can prove they did) should not be penalized for the lost time...

Honestly I would be surprised if anyone on LI or NYC "cancels" a pre-planned vacation. I just assumed they would still go on vaca and miss school.

This is exactly what I expected to happen. It isn't fun to lose the time off, but I understand why it's being done.
ITA. Nothing we can do about it. Then again I can't afford to go away during peak weeks so I am not missing any vacation.

I think doing them all at once is hard for the kids and teachers who already have made plans, but I hope mother nature gives the school districts a major snowstorm during the Feb break. I think it is dangerous to have the make up days in the middle of winter because the districts still might need snow days. :)
This makes no sense. If there is a snowstorm , people can not travel. If extra days are needed, it could be tacked on to the end of the year. No one wants to be in school into July!
You can't tack on day at the end of the year. It would be after regents. What my district did a few times in the last few years was this: The friday of Memorial day is Sup. Conf. Day. So they cancelled that and had the students come in and we did the conference day after the last of school. But, this was when we had 2 snow days. We only have one built in and we don't get it back if we don't use it. However, it doesn't help Regents seat time to have class after the Regents (i.e. coming in July).
Does it stink for kids, families and parents and teachers. Sure. But, there is nothing you can do about it. Unless they waive the 180 day rule. And that won't be decided until after January so they need to act now. And if we have a rough winter we will be over the 10 day waiver anyway.

Most Huntington schools (CSH, HF, SH, Npt, and HUFSD just needs board approval) are cancelling Feb break + 2 other day.
We missed 8 and are making up 6, so there are our two snow days. If we use any snow days this year, teachers only will be making up in June.
I really don't have a problem with it. I'm in the business of educating children - not taking vacations. It will be a tough stretch, but DH had to use his private sector vacation days for the storm since we had no power.

i love that turning a federal holiday into a school day is supposedly illegal, yet my school does it every year (private school)

I'm a city teacher. I definitely think we could use the make up days to catch up, especially in testing grades. I'm just bummed cuz I was hoping to take a class during the Feb break or at least work on an online one. Oh well. Much worse things have come from Sandy.
