NYC Teachers please read regarding tomorrow...
From the UFT FB page...
The DOE has just informed all school-based staff that they don't need to report to their schools until 10 a.m. tomorrow. There will still be no penalties for transit-related lateness. This new reporting time applies to ALL schools.

Re: NYC Teachers please read regarding tomorrow...
Thank You so much for posting this. My DH is a teacher. It's Just like the DOE to let us know things at the last minute. DH had already gone to bed so I just had to wake him up to tell him because he was going to get up at 5:30 am and leave at like 6/6:30. He had no clue what time to go in so he was going to leave at the time he usually does...

NYC Teachers please read regarding tomorrow...
So...I didn't know this until I woke up at 5 this morning to leave at 5:40 -- I happen to have a fellow DOE teacher staying with me at the moment and she heard me up and told me about this. I would have NEVER checked my email before going to work...that is RIDICULOUS! I now am awake and have no clue when to leave for work...

I'm so upset. My mom, who doesn't even uually go in at 8:30 was told she didn't have to go, then that she had to be there at 8L30, and when I woke up and saw that, she was already at work.

Wait, the teachers here are "pissed" because they didn't know they could come into work 1-1/2 hour later than originally told? Boo-hoo, many people (including myself) have been back at work for days now so suck it up and stop complaining.

It's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but they could've planned it way better. They've known since Wednesday that they had to report in, they should've mentioned it in one of their many press conferences. They only released the list of closed schools last night as well.

I think teachers here are upset over the lack of communication on the situation. I know this entire board has become a hotbed for fights and controversy and everyone attacks everyone, but the thread clearly states it is for teachers and contains information for teachers. If you only want to stir shit up and attack them for their rightful frustration and confusion over lack of communication, why bother?

I don't think you realize that lateness of teachers is REALLY frowned upon by our administration. So allowing us extra time during this time should have been communicated better, ESPECIALLY, for those who travel far for their jobs after hearing about HOURS to wait for gas and HOURS of sitting in traffic.
We get that there are bigger problems going on right now, don't belittle a concern and frustration teachers as a whole have to deal with today. It's just rude.

I'll admit, my response was rude but I felt it was insensitive to post a complaint about the DOE not providing timely-notice of a delayed opening, when many people on this board have been working for days, scrambling for childcare, and losing vacation days when there was no way humanly possible to get to work. I don't mean to be snarky, but if you don't want everyone to read and respond, then don't post it on the FHF board and instead post it on the Teachers Only board.

ITA! It was very insensitive. I have no had any time off for this. I worked on Monday and Tuesday as well! You are lucky that you didnt have to go in until today! Post this on the teachers board if you want to complain because I would been so thankful if i could have stayed home until today!

I can't speak for the OP poster but I think the reason for posting it on FHF is to get the word out quicker since this board has seen a lot more traffic as of late and especially that late at night.
No hard feelings, each and every person on here is going through something Sandy related so we understand, and everyone has something to be frustrated about lately.

I sat in the pitch black in the middle of queens waiting for my building to open so yeah I am a little pissed that the message wasn't sent out before 12 am. Cross bay had no lights and it probably would have been less dangerous trying to cross it in the daylight as opposed to the pitch black that it was. Why can't we just be nice to each other instead of writing nasty pointless replies? Did it make you feel better to rip teachers apart? I just don't get people....

People are"pissed"because it is typical doe style. My friends left early this am to allot time to make it ON TIME because the email was sent out at almost 1am. The thought is there and the gesture is nice, but its typical of them to send it out when everyone is sleeping and I'm sure without the power to check their email. Sorry people are complaining. Its not about the courtesy they extended but how over half of my colleagues didn't know until they got to work. At this time, effective communication is imperative...especially with thousands of employees. I'm not complaining about having to go in later. Trust me.

Not going to work shouldn't be considered "lucky" it was considered a safety issue not just for us,but for the students, and the extra traffic on the roads having school would have created. The decision made sense not to have schools open. Not to mention schools that are ruined from Sandy. But that is not what this thread is about, it was just to inform teachers of something they might not have heard about until very late last night.

I'm sorry that this happened to you and I don't hate teachers (many of my nearest and dearest are teachers). It wasnt the initial "heads up" post that got to me, it was the "Poor me, I could have slept longer" remarks that got me because I haven't slept in days but have gotten myself to work each day with an almost 2 hour commute each way from Brooklyn.

DH spent a lot of time planning his commute (including walking miles) so changing the time he needed to come in affected this plan. Seriously people, how about being a little nicer in general. Everyone is going through their shit. Nobody was complaining about losing sleep.
