NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
My sister applied for this program. Has anyone heard good feedback from this program?
My sister has an Bachelors in Business Administration and her GodMother suggested she applies. I have not heard much in regards to this program.
Any suggestion or comments will be appreciated...

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
I have a few friends who did it and my brother was just interviewed
from what i see, if you dont mind getting placed in a high needs area/school, it is a very good way to get into the NYC teaching system. otherwise its very difficult to get a job.

yes, I was in the process but I did not want to get a masters in the fields that they were recruiting for (mostly science and math)
but I know someone who did it and she loved it.
the schools you are put in are ROUGH. it is not for the faint of heart. some of these kids are really put through the ringer. but she really loves her kids and it put her on a great career path.

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
I'm sorry, but I've never met more miserable people in my life than Teaching Fellows. And I've known several.
They throw you into the worst schools imaginable (like the school I taught at for 6 years, where I met two) and make you get your Master's in - what, a year? So it's your first year teaching and you're overwhelmed, stressed, and miserable. You have to take Master's-level courses at night and on weekends so you don't have one minute to decompress or chill out. And you're in the toughest schools so your job is that much harder. I taught at a school like that, and I lasted for 6 years. But I wasn't enrolled in an accelerated Master's program at the time.
The people who volunteer for this are generally wonderful - selfless, motivated, very intelligent individuals. This program chews them up and spits them out. My best friend did a similar program in another city (Teach for America) and she lasted 10 weeks. The people I went to grad school with who were in the program would go home sobbing a few times a week. It was awful. I'm sorry I don't have better things to say about the program, but this has been my experience with it.

Keep 'em coming ladies.. I encouraged my sister to try it! She is very optimistic it will work for her. She is in the midst of opening a day care center. But she will love to give the fellowship program a try. ITA

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
I came to teaching through the Fellows program in 2002 and I've been teaching in East New York ever since. The program is intense and a 6 week program in the summer is not enough to prepare you for the realities of the classroom. I've only managed to stay in the profession because I found an awesome school with an amazing staff and strong administration. Not everyone is so lucky.
Honestly, if her heart isn't set on teaching and teaching specifically in a low-income, high crime, disadvantaged neighborhood, then she shouldn't apply.

Not necessarily true. The Fellows does not find you a school, you have to go out and find your own after they hire you. I work in a GREAT school and we have many fellows. I also have two friends who hire for the fellows if you have any questions...

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
I was a teaching fellow. I began teaching English in 2005. It is an amazing program and I teach in a great school. As a previous poster stated, you find your job, so you are not forced to work anywhere you don't choose. I had a wonderful experience and I am still teaching in the same school. If you have any other questions, FM me.

My friend did it for Spec Ed
Yes you end up in high needs schools but seeing as how teachers can't find jobs, this is ideal--you have a job and a free masters!

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
I was a Fellow from 2006-2008. I loved every moment of my job. If my school had not closed, I would still have been there. I got my MST in English Education through Fordham and while I hated the program that wasn't the Fellows fault (I generally hate Education classes...such is life). There were definitely people who were miserable in it, but I've personally heard more positive things than negative and most of the people I was a Fellow with are still teachers. If you have any questions, feel free to FM!

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
I;m sorry but this program pisses me off more than anything! I have my degree in education as do plenty of other people who can't find a teaching job and they hire people with no experience and send them to school?
Maybe these schools should give jobs to the thousands of unemployed teachers who already have their degrees/certification!

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
I applied several years ago and was invited to interview, then chickened out.
I talked to a TON of NYC school teachers, as well as fellows and decided based on their feedback, that it was not for me, personally.

This is something that confuses me as well, especially in the midst of the crisis that is going on in teaching right now. You would think that instead of investing $$$$$ into this program, that there are plenty of teachers out there who already have invested their lives into teaching that would be happy to take these jobs.
NOTHING NYC does though tends to make sense, especially related to their education system.

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
Wow, I didn't mean to make people so upset. From my understanding, the program still exists because the current teacher pool cannot fill certain hard to staff positions. (special ed and science) The Fellows work with the DOE to determine how many people to accept based on the needs for the fall. I know this topic frustrates and angers many people. I am sorry to have upset you all so much.
Also, the subtext of one of your comments was that Teaching Fellows are not dedicated to teaching because they did not get education degrees as undergrads. I know for myself, I had NO IDEA what to major in in college and majored in art history. Not all of us have the wherewithall at 18 to decide what we want to do for the rest of our lives and perhaps shouldn't be punished getting a little life perspective and changing our minds. I wanted to be a college professor (because I am dedicated to teaching) and realized (after teaching college courses) that I want to make more of a difference in the lives of students who really need it. Before you throw stones, perhaps you should really think about who decides to go through this program.
I won't be posting on this thread again because, honestly, I was looking to reach out to Teaching Fellows not to be put down by people for making this decision.
Please FM me if you have something nice to say about Teaching Fellows, Special Ed, or education in general.

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
I was a NYC Fellow in 2006, straight out of college. It was a wonderful experience for me. It's not easy to get accepted; they have a rigorous interview process, and the program is intense (you get your MA degree while teaching full time), but I loved it. I wasn't sure if the program was still around because of the hiring freeze in NYC. I'm assuming they are only taking special education teachers at this point.
I went in for math and have been teaching for 5 years. The program was a wonderful experience. My MA from St. John's was paid for (they take out like 70 each pay check), the summer training before work was intense but I learned so much, and I met some amazing people in that program. I highly recommend it! Any questions, feel free to FM!

You apply to the schools you want to work in, so you really have a lot of choice. Of course, I joined in 2006 when it was a different market. Jobs are hard right now. I'm guessing they only take people for special education which is still needed throughout the city.

It must be very frustrating, but What is your certification in? Is it in a high need area like Special Ed? And, are you willing to work in a title 1 school in the NYC DOE? If everyone who had their degree/certification in high need area were willing to work in high need areas, they wouldn't need a program like this.

I read every post on this thread and no one is putting you down.
Some said that they know others who were unhappy with the program and some said the existence of the program frustrates people with a degree in education, but no one "put you down" or "threw stones."
Please realize that there is a contingent of unemployed teachers on this board who have become frustrated with the whole process, and yes, some of them teach in "high demand" areas.
Also, please don't make assumptions about the unemployed certified teachers. Many of us didn't know at 20 what we wanted to do, either. In fact, I was a career changer as well and I know I'm not alone. I couldn't do Teaching Fellows because my area (Social Studies) is not high demand and, honestly, I did not want to travel into the city. (I didn't mind the high needs students, but I did mind the commute. Been there done that with my corporate career!)
I personally don't know much about the program since, again, my subject area is unaffected by it. It might be a terrific program, and I would heartily applaud its existence if it only hired from the Fellows program after it exhausted the certified applicant pool. However, NYC being the bureaucracy that it is, I don't trust for one second that it would work that way.
Just giving the other perspective.

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
My sister did the Fellows for Special Ed and she seems to love it. Was the master's program while teaching difficult, yes but she loves her position now. I can only report on the outside looking in but she never really kvetched about the classes she took or taught. I do recall that she had to interview with schools after the program to find her position but she was hired quickly and in a school she loves. Best wishes to you!

As a former fellow, I totally disagree! You get your MA in 2 years. You go to school in the summer, and you take 1 or 2 classes each semester. It honestly wasn't that bad of a schedule IMO. Yes, your first year is hard, but that is for any teacher. By my second year, I was fine, and by my third year after my MA, I felt like a confident, competent math teacher.
Most of the people in my cohort excelled and are still teaching (5 years later). Yes, a few dropped out a long the way, but that is the same with people who get into education the traditional way; teaching in the city is TOUGH These schools need a lot of improvement.
Anyway, as a Fellow, you apply to any school. Yes, it should be high needs, but you can apply to any school in whatever borough you are assigned. So it's not like they place you in the worst school. They used to place you, but it changed a while ago, and you do the placement on your own.
This post just rubbed me the wrong way. Most people had a great experience as a Fellow, and working with Fellows. My old school was almost all Fellows and everyone was doing really well.
