Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
I was a TF...cohort 5. I'm still teaching in NYC, in an impact school, and still enjoy doing so. The program really did not prepare me for the reality of being in a hard-to-staff school that was both underfunded and managed poorly. Then again, there were many perks to the program...guaranteed placement, free master's degree (from the same private school that I wanted to attend anyway)...this was almost 10 years ago, though. I know the program has changed since then...don't know if I would do it under the current program, or the current teaching climate. Teaching in NYC is intense, and I know more TFs that have left teaching than those who have stayed. You have to really want it, and you have to be prepared for the toughest 2 years of your life.

I am also a NYC Teaching Fellow! I agree that it was the best decision I EVER made!! I love teaching and the whole experience was great!
I taught in a city school for three years and then came out to Long Island. The training and support I received in the city school was amazing!!!
If you have any ?'s I'd be more than happy to answer them.
I was in the program in 2006. They gave me three years to complete the degree....not one!!!

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows - Has anyone applied or have feedback?
Thank you so much for the thoughtful replies! I have already decided to go for it. I am really excited about teaching and ready for whatever challenges come my way.
They don't guarantee placement anymore, we are kind of on our own in terms of the job search. I am not too worried about it though. They accepted a lot fewer fellows than they have in the past, and only for high-need areas.
I am in the process of researching schools and finishing up my resume. As soon as NYCTF tells me what borough and if I am in D75 or not, the search for a job is on.

I'm sorry, but I've never met more miserable people in my life than Teaching Fellows. And I've known several.
I am a teaching fellow and I could not be happier with my decision. The people you knew probably went into the program and into teaching for the wrong reasons.

As a former fellow, I totally disagree! You get your MA in 2 years. You go to school in the summer, and you take 1 or 2 classes each semester. It honestly wasn't that bad of a schedule IMO. Yes, your first year is hard, but that is for any teacher. By my second year, I was fine, and by my third year after my MA, I felt like a confident, competent math teacher.
Most of the people in my cohort excelled and are still teaching (5 years later). Yes, a few dropped out a long the way, but that is the same with people who get into education the traditional way; teaching in the city is TOUGH These schools need a lot of improvement.
Anyway, as a Fellow, you apply to any school. Yes, it should be high needs, but you can apply to any school in whatever borough you are assigned. So it's not like they place you in the worst school. They used to place you, but it changed a while ago, and you do the placement on your own.
This post just rubbed me the wrong way. Most people had a great experience as a Fellow, and working with Fellows. My old school was almost all Fellows and everyone was doing really well.
Ita! (except that I wasn't a Fellow, my husband was.) Now, in his fourth year, he is already part-time administration in his school ---he has done very well. DH was hired in a school through a friend of mine who works for the UFT and does work at his school. she hooked him up with the interview; so it helps to know people to get yourself into a school or neighborhood/borough you want.
They are excessing like crazy and not tenuring teachers like they used to. there are probably going to be very few fellows and I am sure only for math, science and special ed.

Your DH is a dork! ------> Kidding!!!
We have quite a few fellows at my school (and I am one of them.) They are among the hardest working teachers in our building. We've been put down many times by our colleagues for being handed our education degrees and taking a shortcut to teaching. To combat that many of us bust our butts and give every ounce of what we have to students who often have home lives we cannot even fathom.
Jax - I was a year ahead of you at St. Johns - it was great.
Becoming a fellow was like winning the lottery for me. I worked my a@@ off and it was painful at times but I wouldn't change it for anything. Yes, the fellows programs has its faults. There are mostly math, science and sp ed opportunities available, but really, there is such a high turnover for those positions (both fellows and traditional) that it shouldn't be surprising. Yes, we are often offered positions in less than ideal schools, but no one forces you to take that job.
If you have any questions about being a fellow please feel free to fm me.
