NYC w/ a stroller
I've only gone into the city with DD for MSG shows and things like that, but we want to do American Girl Place and a few other things. Is it really annoying to do this with a stroller? I know the walk isn't terrible to rockefeller center where american girl is, but what if we wanted to do the subway? how difficult is that with a stroller?
Also, any other suggestions while we're there? I was thinking maybe FAO schwartz since it's right by american girl

NYC w/ a stroller
I would not bring a stroller on the subway.
My DD has been on the LIRR and subway many times and has always walked.
I think there’s a magnolia over there if you wanted to get cupcakes but other than that I’ve got nothing!

NYC w/ a stroller
I’ve brought my double stroller all over the city, train, subway etc. tons of people live in the city and use strollers. If she isn’t heavy and will stay in a baby wrap I would use that!

She's 3, lol.. no baby wrap. But she's still young enough that walking around the city will be alot for her

Same. I'd bring an umbrella. At 3 my kids got tired of walking and would complain constantly.

Yes, bring something that you feel comfortable carrying up and down the stairs WHILE carrying DC. Otherwise you're stuck with only subway stations that have elevators which are not NEARLY enough of them. And even still they are smelly, cramped, and more often than not out of service. Ask me how I know!

Bring an umbrella stroller that you can collapse easily and quickly to bring on the subway.

Exactly! My husband and I carried the double up the steps multiple times but my kids were sleeping in the stroller so we had to! I have a double umbrella and it was doable. It’s a pain no doubt especially in a double umbrella but it was worth it!

Re: NYC w/ a stroller
I just did this with my two year old a few weeks ago- I borrowed an umbrella stroller cuz it was a little smaller than what I have and it was easy. Literally carried him in the stroller up and down the subway stairs. No problems

Yes it’s totally annoying with a stroller. I’d rather carry her the few times she complains vs carrying and folding and unfolding a stroller.

This is so so so dangerous. Someone died a few months ago doing this.

He was strapped in and I had a good grip on him.
If I felt it was unsafe I wouldn’t have done it.

Re: NYC w/ a stroller
The parent died, not the kid. The parent was holding the kid strapped in the stroller, apparently missed a step, and fell down hitting their head and passed away.

Re: NYC w/ a stroller
That is beyond horrible. Wow.
For what it’s worth I was going up and down the steps super slow prob and annoyed people behind me.
That’s an awful story though

NYC w/ a stroller
I just went with my almost 4 year old to the city without a stroller thinking she'd be fine. And nope, her little legs are not ready for all the walking. I was carrying her by the end of the night. Never again. Bring a light weight umbrella stroller. I've always found some guy to help me up or down the stairs if she is still in it and it isn't folded. Some subway stops also have elevators. I will never do the city without one until she is a little older

If you are bringing a stroller I’m not sure why you would even take the subway. Penn to Rockefeller center is not a long walk for adults and it’s no walk for your DD if she’s in the stroller.
My vote is stroller if you’re going to walk, no stroller if you’re taking the subway. You can’t carry her up and down the stairs in the stroller anyway so when is she even in it?

Re: NYC w/ a stroller
As annoying as they are, strollers are better for the little ones, imho, safer for them in the city. As a commuter, I have seen little ones get knocked over by asshats who are in such a rush and don't or won't pay attention to who they are about to barrel into. Don't bother with the subway, if you have a stroller the walk is fine. Two people carrying an open stroller up and down the subway stairs is fine, one person doing that is quite dangerous. Again, the asshats who don't or won't pay attention to those around them.

well yea i said that in my OP that i know the walk isn't bad, but in the event we are doing other things, weather is crappy, or are in a rush to make a train back home and need to take the subway, is it doable?

I don’t know, by the time you take her out of the stroller/lug her and the stroller downstairs, and then repeat to come back upstairs I honestly don’t think it would save you time. I seem to be in the minority here. I just know if I had to drag DD AND a stroller through the subway I’d be completely miserable. It’s not like you can leave it somewhere, that stroller will be attached to you the whole day if she isn’t in it.

I agree with all of this. I'd rather walk 100 blocks then deal with a stroller on the subway.

I agree. My son has been commuting with me since he was 3 and I never once brought a stroller (and we would come from Staten Island on the train, take the ferry and the subway and then my dad would take him back on the subway).

Bring a stroller. It's not a big deal. Most subway stations have elevators, as does the LIRR. People live in the city with strollers. It's not bad to get around with them and it's much easier than carrying a 3yo around.

This!
My 4 yr granddaughter was just here and we brought the stroller everywhere the day we were in the city. Bus, subway and the staute of liberty cruise. And glad we did because she passed out. Bring the stroller. You just may need to carry it up and down the steps of the subway. But if you have 2 people it isnt an issue. You do not need to fold a stroller on the subway.
