NYPD Announces Crackdown on Cell Phone Use While Driving
24-hour enforcement operation on Thursday across the five boroughs
The New York City Police Department today announced a citywide crackdown
beginning Thursday at midnight on the use of hand-held cell phones while
driving, as part of its focus on traffic infractions linked to death and
injury.
The NYPD reminds all New Yorkers that the use of a hand-held cell phone
while driving a vehicle is illegal. In addition, driving while texting or
talking on a cell phone is dangerous and endangers both drivers and
pedestrians.
Individuals using hand-held cell phones while driving in New York City face
a fine of $130. During 2009, the NYPD issued on average 617 summonses a
day to drivers using hand-held cell phones. On October 22nd, 2009, 7,463
summonses were issued for this infraction during an initiative similar to
the one planned for Thursday.
The 24-hour initiative begins Thursday, January 21st at midnight. The NYPD
encourages safe driving and asks the public to use seatbelts and to use a
hands-free device for car phones.

I think a great way to bring money into the city/state/counties would be to crack down on cell phones. Majority of people I see driving are on their cell phones.

Same here - I see so many people on their phones while driving. I think that catching someone while texting & driving will be more difficult though and I believe that is more dangerous.
ugh, I wish people would just take responsibility & think of the possible consequences & just not do it.

Exaclty! every time I see a person driving like an idiot they have been on their cell phones!

I'm glad to hear this and I agree with a pp about how much money they could raise through this... not to mention all the accidents they would probably prevent
