I think the complexity of the situation is intertwined in the root of CENTURIES of 2 different religious group leaving side by side. Refusing to give an inch to call the conflict over on BOTH sides.

This sentiment right here is what NEEDS to happen but it NEVER will.

This part of the world has known violence for way to long to just have it come to a peaceful ending.

Like stated before I doubt we will live to see peace come to this area...it will be a long time before that happens.

There is a very, VERY large undercurrent of anti-semitism right here in the US. I have the complaints in my office to prove it. In fact, my perception of the reporting here in the US is that it is very biased against Israel.

I will agree with that. And it's not just in the US. This has become a worldwide problem. Increasing more than it ever was!

But since I am married to a Jewish man, have a Jewish lastname, anti semitism is NOT in me when I am trying to explain a different point of view.

Re: Obama calls for Israel's return to pre-1967 borders

Being from Long Island and working in NYC I have lots of Jewish friends...when discussing the politics of the Middle East in the past, many of my Jewish friends believed that even disagreeing with the policies of Israel was anti semetic. I think being anti semetic and not agreeing with the political policy of a group of people are two different things.

regarding land grabs, Human Rights Watch (HRW.org) did a case study re: Israel's treatment of Jewish settlers in the West Bank and their treatment of Palestinians. This report is called "Separate and Unequal" HRW report

In their report HRW states that it is against international humanitarian law for the occupying power from transferring it's population into the territories it occupies.

Whether this is true or not- I do not know.. it seems that HRW is a legit organization and isn't just dedicated to the Israeli/Palestinian issue, but others around the World.

Yet, Israel has killed too, has grabbed land (creating even more violence from Palestine's side!!!!). I guess they think violence is the answer to Israel doing whatever it wants to the land grabbing for years. I am not in their shoes but nobody has really supported Palestine either and helped them. AGAIN, NOBODY is supporting Hamas.

Please explain to me what land Israel has grabbed. Israel won land in a war- where Israel was attacked and fought back and won. I don't consider that a "land grab." And what violence is Israel doing? I would be very curious to see your sources. What I see is Israel using violence to defend itself after an attack- and not so much the other way around. Please do show me the sources of your statements. Thanks.

Shelly, it is well documented that Israel has built settlements in areas they shouldn't be, against International Law. this is not new.

Re: Obama calls for Israel's return to pre-1967 borders

The Arab countries will NEVER be satisfied until Israel is wiped off the map. Obama is just giving into the terrorists. Hamas is not going to be satisfied with any deal that gives the Jewish people any land at all. Every group deserves a homeland. And everyone has one except the Jews- they lost it in the year 76AD to the Roman Empire and have been displaced and persecuted all over the world since then. Finally, it took the Holocaust for the world to understand the importance of a place for the Jews. As soon as it was put into existence all the Arab countries ganged up and tried to stop it. Palestine was an Arab land- a small land, not really developed - surrounded by other Arab lands. Those Arab lands refused to allow their Palestinian neighbors admission so they could get them to fight against Israel. To give into the terrorists now is not what America stands for. We support the only democracy that existed in that region for 50 years. I am so disappointed in my President.

Re: Obama calls for Israel's return to pre-1967 borders

Imagine if Canada attacked the USA. Against all odds, we fought back and won.

(Israel did this in 1948, 1956- in 1956 she gave back the Sinai. Then in 1967 she was attacked again and won- against all odds.)

So, imagine if Canada attacked the US- we fought back and won. We needed to keep some of Canada's territory to keep our borders safe. But, the UN says no- give back the land? Would we listen?

Let's say, suicide bombers came in, over and over and over again and killed our women and children- so, we try to give back the land- at least make a good faith effort- but Canada refuses to acknowledge we have the right to exist-still we try and give back the land- still they launch rockets at our civilian sites?

Wouldn't we be discouraged and frustrated?

Thanks Mary. Its hard for me. Those who know me well know I depsise travel. But to see Eretz Yisrael is a life long dream for me and an even bigger dream to have my children B'nai Mitzvot there (assuming they would actually want that). As an American Jew right now, I wouldn't go. I wouldn't feel safe.I had been listening to the fright of a mother on the radio who just put her daughter on a plane for a Birthright trip to Israel BEFORE the President made his speech and prays to Gd she comes home.

What disgusts me most of all was the calculated nature of the announcement which came the day before Benjamin Netanyahu was due to arrive in the US to discuss peace. Seriously? The timing was a little too suspect for me. BAD TASTE.

I've always wanted to visit Israel, too, but am also concerned about safety. As you may or may not remember, I love History, so I've studied quite a lot about Israel and it's History. I love reading about new archaeological finds in Israel, that verify Scriptures!! I've read the historical works by Josephus, that tell a lot about what the Jewish people went through, during the Roman destruction of Jerusalem. I love the words of HOPE, above!!! They're beautiful. Prayers!!!!

You are right. It brought to the world's attention the problems faced by the Jews but many people just wanted the Jews out of THEIR land.

I must say then who ever your discussing this with is not the majority and are ignorant. I will fully admit when something Israel did/does is wrong....But that is not to say that this statement that Obama made is beyond insane. And, yes I truly believe that anti semitism is a major issue all around the world but one does not mean the other and I think whoever your speaking to does not represent the norm!

I'm from LI and live in NYC as well and I've experienced what the original poster is saying.

If you don't support Israel 100% you're anti semitic. If you question them you are as well.

I think some of Israel's policy's scream of "Apartheid South Africa". I disagree with a lot of what the government does. I don't think the current government under Netanyahu isn't making things any better.

If you know the history of South Africa and the history of Israel then the comparison makes absolutely no sense. South Africa was imperialized for resources by European countries who were imperializing every weak nation they could get their hands on. Israel had no resources and the people there wanted a homeland. Not the same at all

I'm from LI... my Israeli husband lived in NYC, and neither of us ever experienced anything like this. While we both vehemently SUPPORT and DEFEND Israel, that does not mean that we perceive hesitations on Israeli policy as anti-semitic. Israelis are very loud spoken, there's no question about that, so perhaps that vehement defense of Israel is misinterpreted as something it's not.
