odd kinda question
Do you think your disposition affects your unborn child and how they will be as a newborn?
Meaning...a happy mommy makes a happy baby? Stressed out mommy makes a crank baby?

yes that makes sense
But even the calmest of the calm can be stressed out (or go through periods of) while PG....And vica versa

Re: odd kinda question
I am a very laid back person, but because my pregnancy is high risk and I have been to the hospital numerous times it has stressed me out I just want this baby to get to the safe weeks so I can relax again...

Re: odd kinda question
Interesting question...
I don't know from having a baby but I am told that when I was a baby I was so fussy and cried constantly. There was a lot of stress in the house at the time- we'd been living with relatives who more or less kicked us out and there was strife from the get-go.
My parents bought a house, and the first night in the new house was the first time I slept all night without waking up crying and from there I was so much better. My mom really thinks that I picked up on all their stress and anxiety, and they were so happy and relieved when they finally got the house. It seems that I was too.

Re: odd kinda question
Without question I think babies certainly feed off of the mood of those around them. In utereo, I'm not sure it makes a difference. Both my children's personalities are different - and I was pretty much the same throughout both pregnancies.
My son's bday is Sept 19, 2001 - and while I wasn't stressed and really underreacted to the whole thing - it would mean that historically we'd have a whole generation of those who were stressed & pregnant on Sept. 11th.

Re: odd kinda question
I think that stress plays a factor in the PG.....I've had moments where I feel like I just can't take anymore cr@p and then I have moments of pure happiness.
I only pray that my bad times didn't outweigh the good times and don't make my baby cranky or difficult

Re: odd kinda question
I had to respond because my sister had a baby (happy and healthy in July). The day she found out she was pregnant, the day after thanksgiving last year my brother in law told her he wanted a divorce and was in love with someone else. During her pregnancy, she had a 1yo, worked in jersey city, from rocky point, had to get rid of her 2 dogs, sell her house and move in with my mom. She went thru hell. But she made it and the baby is one of the happiest babies I have ever seen.

Re: odd kinda question
During my preg... well at least the end of my preg. I was miserable...between the PUPPS and everything with my dad...I was extremly anxious, cranky, stressed...and whatever else you could add on top...
My son, is got the sweetest temperment, and is such an easy baby...
However...when Im stressed, he def. can sense it and he reacts to it...
For ex.. recently I was arguing with my MIL (go figure ) over the phone, while I was trying to bath him and get him ready for bed.. (this is usually a very relaxing process...hence why it ends in sleep...he loves the bath, and baby massages etc...) Well....he screamed the entire time, when I got off the phone I was crying...and so was he... I could totally see that he felt as sad as I was... As soon as I snapped out of it, and picked myself back up...he calmed and went right to sleep!!!!

Re: odd kinda question
NOPE--110%nope!!!!
My pregancy with my son was emotionally He!!.... My DH and I were not married, I postponed, hit a man with my car, had to drag friends/ family out of a bar, almost being punched, and being in a boat that almost sunk..Then being admitted 7 times for dehydration, and working 52 hours a week..as well as many other peaks of adrenaline and other extremely stressful situations---
My son was born so sweet and calm.. You'd never imagine all the cr@p i went through. Although this pregnancy has not been the smoothest, it has not equalled the emotional stress I went through with the first- and I ma praying that my next little one will be just as calm and see that its genetics not stress.. lol
My ENTIRE family warned me that I needed to relax more with pregnancy #1, or else I would have a colicky cranky baby who never slept, instead I was blessed with the exact opposite!

Re: odd kinda question
I'm a laid back kinda person most of the time... my son is pretty laid back and easy going too (except for the usual 4 1/2 yr old craziness ) When I was pregnant with him and until he was about a year old I was VERY stressed, I was in an emotionally and verbally abusive relationship with my Ex, luckily I got out early enough, but I don't think that it had an affect on my son, because he ALWAYS ALWAYS had a LOT of LOVE from me!

Re: odd kinda question
I cant speak from personal experience but my boss, who is one of my closest friends, had her first baby last March. She is the most easy going person I know, always in a good mood, takes things with a grain of salt type of person..in a good way though. Her pregnancy was awesome! She never complained once...never got sick...LOVED being pregnant. Aidan (her son) is the absolute best baby I have ever seen. The child never cries, he sleeps through the night, has the BEST disposition ever, the minute he opens his eyes from his nap, hes smiling and laughing. She can put him in his bouncer thingy and he will stay there content for hours.
In this case, I always tell her its due to her personality that he turned out like this. So I do kind of believe it has some sort of effect.

Re: odd kinda question
I think so... I am actually a little worried about being too stressed out while I'm pregnant because I am afraid it may affect the baby. But raising a baby, I completely believe that a child takes emotional cues from their parents.

Re: odd kinda question
i def. DON'T think so, with my first born life was so easy when I was pregnant, I was young, in great shape, we had no financial stressors, it was just a perfect pregnancy, and she is my crankiest, mooodiest kid. My son who was born in Aug is so laid back and sweet and I was soooooo stressed during my pregnany w/ exhaustion, taking care of 2 toddlers, and working. My middle daughter is a mix of the 2.

This is my friend's theory. I was calm during my pregnancy, so that's why Jared is such a good baby. I don't know...

Re: odd kinda question
Good question, but I think it's more how you are once they're out of the womb that effects them the most.

Re: odd kinda question
I think a baby is TAUGHT everything from the moment they're born. I don't think that if a PG mommy-to-be is cranky her whole pg, that it would mean a cranky baby. BUT, if a mom is cranky around a newborn/infant, then they definitely pick it up. Kinda like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Re: odd kinda question
thanks for all the answers ladies!
I odn't know what i believe since i have never had a child but i have been thinking about that lately. My job can be stressful at times and i was wondering if added stress which does affect MY OWN body, would it (or hoaw is it that it doesn't) affect my unborn child? And would that affect his/her disposition once born!
And as far as the once he/she is born thing...i completely agree!

Re: odd kinda question
Geez, in case moms don't have enough guilt already. Now its her fault if her child has a demanding temperment?
I know none of you are really blaming, but thats the natural extension of this.
You know what I think -- a cranky baby makes a stressed out mom much more often than the reverse!

Re: odd kinda question
I think exposure after birth definitely afffects the baby. I am 100% laid back, to the point where my pediatrician didn't believe me that Jack was my first child, since I'm just very calm and not a worrier. Jack is just like me...very independent, very laid back, and quite the fearless daredevil. My DH's family is a bunch of worriers and his Sister's kids are afriad of their own shadow at times.
