Re: Ode to the Inappropriate Apostrophe
There is an Amish store on 107 that I pass all the time-- they have a realtively new sign -- it says:
SHED'S and GAZEBO'S
I want to tear it down!!!
Next to it they have a sign that says "Bunnies and cages for sale".
How do they get the hand-painted one right and not the PROFESSIONALLY MADE SIGN???

My ILs have a sign on the front of the house:
The McSmith's
They drew the apostrophe in with gold pen because it "didn't look right without it".

My cousin bought her nephew a little sign for his room.
It said:
"Nicholas's room"
poor kid - we still call him Nichol-@ss - even though his mom was crafty enough to cover up the second "s".
"Nicholas's" is actually correct. according to the Chicago Manual of Style.
The missuse of the apostrophe drives me batty as well.
Actually, both ways are correct - but i definitely prefer "Nicholas'" and I had no idea that you could write it both ways - it still looks wrong to me with the extra s!

really? I always go by chicago, are there other style manuals that have it the other way? As far as I knew unless the word was plural, it was 's not s'. Like My parents' room(belonging to more than one parent) But not a proper name: Nicholas's room(belonging to only one Nicholas)
