Re: Boat full of fireworks watchers capsizes near Long Island's Oyster Bay; 3 dead

OMG. This is the first I am hearing about this. How absolutely tragic but a tragedy that I imagine could have been avoided for various reasons.

How could any parent possibly think it would be a good idea to get on a super crowded boat with their child during such a chaotic event of all? I know coulda, shoulda, woulda...but how can anyone ever get over the guilt of such a stupid stupid decision? I feel terrible for those parents, for the boat owner even with the guilt they will forever deal with.Chat Icon

This is just awful!!!! My heart breaks for these families.

There's a reason there are rules for boats, and the captain seems to have disregarded them

I just dropped my kids off at their summer rec camp in Oyster Bay and you can't even get near the marina, there are news trucks all over, and helicopters circling so low I can see the pilot in it!

This just sickens me.

The 3 kids were found in the cabin. Even if they had life-jackets on, I don't think they would have been able to get out. You'd have to take your life-jacket off to swim out.

It's such a tragedy. Yes the boat was way over capacity. I'm not sure if that's why they capsized. Isn't the speed limit a 5 mph, no wake for that harbor?

After the fireworks show is over all of the boats go back to their harbors very quickly. As soon as they get out of the harbor they can go as fast as they want. So that means a ton of speeding boats going in all different directions and it makes the water in the area very choppy. They also could have gotten caught in the wake of another boat that got too close. There was also a thunderstorm at the time..

It can be very scary even when you are following all rules and doing everything carefully but to add that extra risk of being over capacity and not enough life jackets is just insane. The kids should not have been in the cabin and they should have had jackets on.

Boat full of fireworks watchers capsizes near Long Island's Oyster Bay; 3 dead

The boat was WAY over capacity by about 15 people. No responsible boater would ever let that many people on their boat. And there were not enough life jackets for everyone. It is such an awful tragedy and those kids in the cabin didn't stand a chance once that boat went under. And it bothers me that they keep calling it a yacht. It was a 34 foot boat, which is far from a yacht.

Where did this guy think he was putting 27 people on this boat safely?

from my parents house you catch watch the parade of boats from oysterbay to huntington harbor

the harbor patrol corrals them into a single file line as they come aroung the lloyd neck but there are always idiots that try to drive around the line and cut

it is very dark coming back from fireworks. We have had boats for years and i now as adult understand why we never went by boat to watch firworks

i definetly think Boston does it well but that is the landscape - they won't open the draw bridge out of the charles river till after 2 in the mornign. they want most boaters to sleep on their boats over night

I just heard on the news that children under 12 are not required to wear a life jacket IF in the cabin. Regardless, whether they were or were not, they were trapped when the boat capsized.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm sure weight distribution played a roll in the capsizing. Small wake and 20+ people on one side of that boat might do it.

They are reporting that they aren't siblings but the children are all related (I imagine cousins b/c the two individuals that were operating the boats were brotherinlaws)

I just think they should not have been in the cabin at all while driving home but I guess with that many people some had to go in the cabin.

My heart really breaks for those kids, I can't imagine how scared they must have been. Chat Icon

Police identified the three victims as Suffolk County residents David Aurelino, 12, Harley Treanor, 11, and Victoria Gaines, 8.

Sal Aureliano was at the helm of the 34-foot boat. He's also the uncle of David Aureliano, 12, who was killed in the accident.

Why not in the cabin? There is a couch, table, etc in there, they could have been resting, eating, playing games...we are in our cabin alot coming home from the beach...

IMO for this type of event where it is crazy, everyone should be out of cabin and in preservers (under 12) in case of something happening. Just for the ride home. That is just how we always did it, to me it just seems safer.

With 27 people on a boat of that size SOMEONE has to be in the cabin, Unfortunately it was 3 innocent kids. Apparently everyone was jumping off the boat trying to save themselves. I hope someone comes forward and says they tried to get the kids out.

Right I guess in this case there is no avoiding someone being in the cabin, I just hate that it was innocent kids.

I agree - too many people and some people had to be in the cabin. I don't know if people were jumping off or if they fell over when the boat tipped over. Witnesses said the boat tipped when it turned. It sounds like noone could do anything

Just awful all around. Maybe I have a heart of stone but this was not a case of poor judgement, this was absolute gross negligence on the Captain's part. The MAX capacity of that boat is 15. If you look at the boat and try to imagine 27 people on it, all I picture is a bunch of people cramped with no room to move. There's not even enough room for people to sit.

The driver of the boat gave an interview on News12. It's on their website now.
