Honestly, I would prefer my kid in a cabin if it was wakes were causing the boat to rock as a previous poster said. I would think they'd be safer there....and I grew up sailing.
Just saw the interview. That guy looks completely devastated. I cannot even imagine.

Bad judgement or not, I feel awful for that guy and the parents. I can't imagine being in their shoes.

Re: Boat full of fireworks watchers capsizes near Long Island's Oyster Bay; 3 dead
so sad. no excuse for having that many people on board so I am sure some sort of charge will be filed
but
it seems weather may have played a role, add to that his in-experience.
even if the kids had life jackets on inside the cabin, the result would have likely been the same
i am not so quick to jump on this guy - yes, an awful decision to WAY overcrowd this boat. there was no alcohol involved, he didn't seem otherwise reckless.
a storm warning for the area was advised at 10pm and it seems a quick moving STRONG storm passed through just as the boat was hit by the wake that over turned it.
i think there was a TON of bad luck here, along with some poor judgement.
i for everyone involved, especially the families of those children!

A wake would not cause a 34 foot boat to capsize, unless it was overloaded which it was. And I go boating A LOT and my husband is in the boating industry and this entire "rogue wave" thing is not cutting it for an excuse. I understand the weather was less than desireable but they were not boating in the middle of the Bering Sea. They were on the Long Island Sound. As an experienced boater as this mans brother is claiming he is, he should have known better.

Re: Boat full of fireworks watchers capsizes near Long Island's Oyster Bay; 3 dead
I am so incredibly saddened by their senseless deaths. Growing up in the area and boating those same shores all of the time makes this hit home for me. I used to spend summers on my parent's boat. A lot of people would tie their boats together to watch the fire works and you would hop from boat to boat. I am not sure why he had that many people aboard the boat. It seems like way to many, but it is easy to be an arm chair QB today. I am so sorry for their loss. But in this tragedy, please remember if you are on a boat before you leave the docks ask that you and your family are provided with life preservers and teach your children how to swim.

no one is doubting it was over crowded and he should have known better but I can safely speak for the man when I say his plan was not to kill three innocent children.
it was an accident. i am sure the storm and the choppy water (from MANY boats moving a likely speeds faster than they should have been moving) didn't help. Add to that overcrowding and too many bodies on one side opposite of the wake? pretty obvious.

A witness also said he took a turn going VERY fast. I feel terrible for those kids and their parents. You go out to enjoy your 4th of July with family and this is what it turned out like. Awful.

This is unfortunately a poor decision moment that this guy and the parents will have to live with for the rest of their lives. I hate to pass judgement on any one because we have all have made a bad decision once or twice in our lives but thankfully it worked out in our favor. Those poor kids. I'm so upset about this story :(

Question: Would you pack 10 people in your car and drive down the parkway? To me, it's the same thing. It was an accident that could have been prevented by not having 27 people on a 34 foot boat. And of course it was not his intention. There is never any intention when it comes to an accident. But most accidents like this can be prevented by having the sense to not cram 27 people on a boat. It's common sense for a boater who respects the water. Add the fact that he did not have enough life jackets for everyone and that pisses me off even more. But who the hell would have room for 27 life jackets, 27 people, food, coolers, and whatever else he packed onto that boat.

I blame all the adults who were on that boat. Nobody had the wherewithal to say "hey, wait a minute...maybe this isn't such a good idea? This boat wasn't designed to hold this many people." I'm pretty sure the passenger capacity is around 15. To me, this was an obvious bad decision made by a lot of people!

Unfortunately they were passengers and probably trusted the captain of the boat. Most people get excited when asked to go boating and don't think twice. It sucks but it's true.

I am disgusted by this story.
27 people on the 34 foot boat?????????????????
We have a 28 foot boot, and anymore than 6 or 7 people we are bumping into each other.
I read that this is an "experienced boater"....an experienced boater would know thats too many people and that kids need life jackets no matter what.
Disgusting
Same... We were on a boat the same size (34 foot) last night near there in Ashroaken and I can't even imagine having that amount of people on that boat, I would be scared to death.
What a tragedy

I just think they should not have been in the cabin at all while driving home but I guess with that many people some had to go in the cabin.
My heart really breaks for those kids, I can't imagine how scared they must have been.
Why not in the cabin? There is a couch, table, etc in there, they could have been resting, eating, playing games...we are in our cabin alot coming home from the beach...
I agree....no reason the kids couldn't be in there! My dad has bedrooms and a tv in his! The kids always hang out down there!

Boat full of fireworks watchers capsizes near Long Island's Oyster Bay; 3 dead
I was talking about this tragedy yesterday at work. I don't own a boat, but several of my colleagues do.
They informed me that here on LI, on weekends especially, you sit by where ppl launch their boats and more often than not, ppl overload them.
My heart aches for this family, but bottom line, I think it was just a freak tragedy that had to occur to remind ppl again that boats are not toys, but can turn into serious killing machines.
I have also heard many boat owners say they won't take their boats out on a weekend/holiday in LI waters because they are just way too crowded, especially with ppl who don't know what they are doing.
I hope that somehow all who were affected find some peace from this.

we rarely take the boat out on weekend. The amount of boat traffic is crazy and add in alcohol and its a bad equation. Add in holidays and its worse.
poor kids.
