a woman who has broken up a marriage and has come from one herself has NO RIGHT to try and tell others how to "care and feed" their husbands. she's a freaking hypocrite

and the whole notion about whats the harm in reading a book to save a marriage---if you need a BOOK to help your marriage you have many more issues at hand that a book won't help

so it def. sounds like she is not a great source for advice Chat Icon

Those who can't do, teach! That's why she is such a good author for these kinds of books!!!

Okay - the book seems ridiculous. I told my DH right off the bat - you are not marrying your mother - be forewarned.

Chat Icon Personally, I can't imagine being in a lifelong relationship without intellectually stimulating conversation.

This whole idea of serving the man and making sure his needs are met without any consideration of the woman's needs is not for me. If DH wanted someone to cook, clean, and pick up after him without lifting a finger, he could've lived with his mom. I'm not his maid, I'm his wife and his equal.

I have no problem with women who choose to be in traditional roles, but I don't agree with the idea that a woman is there to serve her husband and put his needs above all else. Where is the equality? Why do women need to put in all of the effort to maintain a happy relationship?

I feel that is just YOUR interpretation of it. I DON'T feel that the man can just sit around. I am not saying anything about the man's role in all of this, actually!

I DO believe that a wife SHOULD put her husband's needs before her own but ONLY when the husband is doing the same!!

Yes, this book only applies to the woman's role. However, I don't think that men are supposed to be sitting around doing nothing. . . they just have seperate, equal and just as demanding obligations in the relationship.

AND I feel if a woman DOES follow some of the advice that Dr Laura gives . . . that the husband will be more willing to fulfill his roles.

And as for the intellectual conversation. . .please don't think that FH and I just stare at each other and drool all day. I just mean, that we are never all that serious. . .our relationship just isn't like that . . .

My comments were directed at the book and the author's viewpoint. From the synopsis and excerpts, there's no mention of equality. It's all about pleasing your husband. That's why I have a problem with the message the book is sending. I'd also like to think there's more to "keeping your husband happy" than food and sex.

But, I believe Betty used "big words", so Dr. L might have some trouble. That, and there's lots of words on the pages, too. Chat Icon

I think if more traditional roles work for your relationship, then good for you.

I spent time listening to this show, because I used to spend time with a family member who listened to it. My problem with the book is that I would not want a dime of my money to go to a horse's a$$ like Dr. Laura.

So just because you treat someone like that does not mean they will reciprocate. Just a word of warning...

but then again - traditionally there were lots of miserable women...

Isn't that the sad truth.

And to go off on a little tangent here, I truly believe that the reason the divorce rate is higher than years ago is that women are more able and inclined to live "alone and happy" rather than married & miserable. Just my own observation.

And also didn't have the means to leave. More women today can support themselves than could years ago.

I read that post on LIW, and don't really agree with the methods, but I thought THIS post was particularly nasty. Just because some people choose to follow that method or live that way, as ridiculous as anyone else may see it, you don't need to bash the individuals. Bash the book, the method, but to say you can't deal with those women, I don't know. Seems kind of catty.

Chat Icon This is what happens when people bring posts from over there here. Why was it necessary? This happens almost every time. It's not like the original post here was to discuss a debate or something.

Actually I found that most of this thread was pretty amusing and harmless regardless of what the original posters intent was. We even got a civil debate going here....

No, you are right.

It was merely me venting.

It was not necessary at all.

But I did it anyway b/c I can.

I would discuss it further but the weekend is coming and I need to get to the Butcher. Any good wife knows that the best cold cuts for catering to your DH for the weekend can be bought on Fridays around 5pm... So, I have to go get in line... For me, the measure of a woman's worth is all about her ability to produce one heck of a "spread" of Boar's Head products.

yeah i agree. i've been posting on both all day. and i don't understand why there should be pity for our DHs....what did we say/do that was just so terrible? that we don't want to kow tow to our husbands let them "rescue" us--and work FT jobs and balance our lives?

if that's the case - i guess my DH should go crawl in a corner and die.

btw---i'm being SOOOO untraditional & bad cause DH was off, i was working and he did the laundry (GASP!) and is buying the stuff to make dinner tonite right now!!! Chat Icon

LIFs past does not prove strong when it comes to cross posting. The book could have been its own post, and yes that would have been a great discussion and debate. But I can understand the girls over on LIW feeling like they were being made fun of or bashed or whatever.
