Oil Heat vs. Gas Heat?
which do you prefer and why?
We have only ever had oil heat. We just buy oil when we need some so it's pretty convenient and I would say on average we spend about $1500/year on oil. It's not a monthly plan or anything and usually we get oil in May and then don't need again until September..
I'm curious to know about Gas...

Re: Oil Heat vs. Gas Heat?
I switched to gas last Oct and it was one of the best investments we ever made. We had a pretty old system in the house and it was running only at like 60% so that alone saved us a furtune going from Oil to a new gas burner.
We also never have to worry about running out, forgetting to call or a truck not coming when it needs to because of weather, etc..
My heating bills have been cut in more then half.

Totally agree. We converted 3 years ago and we were so glad we did. It's also better for the enviroment. We use gas for heat, cooking & dryer. We love it!

Re: Oil Heat vs. Gas Heat?
I prefer gas. My gas bill is way cheaper then my oil bill ever was... and my electric is cheaper too because most of our appliances are gas now. I love it cause when its cold I can turn on the heat and my whole house is warm within 20 mins... with oil it used to take forever to get warm.

Re: Oil Heat vs. Gas Heat?
We converted to gas 2 years ago. It's much cheaper than oil (at least for us) and we don't have to worry about running out. We were paying like $700 every 3 weeks for oil in the winter!

Re: Oil Heat vs. Gas Heat?
The savings are real. but can you afford the conversion. Out of pocket cost me $5,800 to convert. I did it 5 years ago and received a free boiler. I had the old oil tank in the ground so that was another 750 to abate it legally. You need a certificate in Nassau or Suffolk Counties, when you abate an oil tank. I used about 750 to 800 gallons a year before we changed over. I do not remember the exact price of oil but I think it was around 2.30 gal.
My gas bill totals around 1,500 a year which includes hot water, heat, and dyer. I am way ahead of what oil cost me, and I think I recouped my investment too.
Good Luck, Arthur

Re: Oil Heat vs. Gas Heat?
We have oil but dont have a choice to convert to gas. We spent about 1800 on oil last year to heat a 4 bedroom colonial. We have big payments december through february but dont have to pay much from april through october.

Re: Oil Heat vs. Gas Heat?
also keep in mind that if Gas lines are not near your home in the street, then you are either denied or have to pay a lot of money to get the lines near your home. Most towns won't run it too far because they don't want to open the street. If you have several other homes in the area that want Gas to, then maybe they will dig up the street. If they only have to run it 100ft or less then it's free. At least in my town it was (Lindenhurst). BUT, we also had to get permission from the Village of Lindy and because they had just redone the streets we were almost denied, but National Grid said they could do the work with only two small holes in the street and they had to sign paperwork saying they were responsible for fixing the street work properly. Everything was fine in the end and we got the Gas line. It was just across the street from our home, so it wasn't far for them to run. GL with your decision.
