Re: Okay - so we all know money is tight...

buy bulk detergent

Weve actually just hit a hitch in our budget which was lean to begin with so we've turned back to the basics we lived off during our wedding savings times.

hamburger meat: great for pasta, spanish dish called picadillo (meat with potatoes in a sauce) takes oen pound of meat and one small potato, one can of tomato sauce and feeds us for dinner and lunch. meat balls, cheapo hamburgers, sloppy joes

Chicken Strips (store brand): over pasta, by themselves, with rice (arroz con pollo)

Shrimp: stir fry, fried rice or with spanish rice.

Peanut butter and Jelly sandwich and ramen noodles for lunch (we work 5mins from home) no more going out for lunch or dinner.

My local store has these stupid crazy "Combo Loco" deals where you buy one thing and other stuff free. Get a stouffers family lasagna and get salad, bread, sherbert and chocolate milk mix free. I've been getting thrify with these deals lately.

Buy veggies only the day i am going to use them so they dont go bad. Buy only what I need.

***

Looking for suggestions on cutting AJ's food budget.

Right now she gets

Grilled chicken cubes (quik fix i think its called) and its perfect size, seasoning and easily saved for alter

Cubed Cheese (store brand)

Yo Baby Yogurt (with coupons)

Pears

Gerber treats from Walmart or Target (whoever has the sale)

Store brand baby juice

Store brand whole milk

****

Lately I thank heaven above that my daycare that im sending to her gives her breakfast, morning snack, the snack i send (pears), lunch, afternoon snack, another snack I send (yogurt) and still yet another late evening snack! Chat Icon

We also will only go out to dinner with the kids to restaurants on the kids eat free nights. Check around and make a list of the restaurants and days. My kids are notorious for eating one bite of a kids meal and it makes me nuts! Now, we just go where both kids eat free when DH and I get an entree. Most of the times my kids barely finish one meal, so we pack the other up to go.

what restaurants do this? Chat Icon

Specifically for LI...I'm no help...I live in Cincinnati now. Chat Icon Google "Kids eat free Long Island" and I bet there will be some mom blog out there with a list. I'm pretty sure Ground Round still does it. Most are Sun-Thursday or just specific nights of the week, never weekends. Within my local town, there is a Mexican place on Mondays, a Pub on Tuesdays, etc. I find the best way to discover which restaurants do this is to just start visiting the websites of local restaurants. I also find a lot of info in my towns version of the Pennysaver (if those are still around on LI!) Chat Icon HTH

Miller's Ale House in Levittown kids eat free on Tuesdays.

Re: Okay - so we all know money is tight...

oh and we NEVER buy paper/plastic plates, cups, silverware.

SO much cheaper just to wash!

I replaced all the bulbs in my house to save on my electric bill and I seriously go around turning off lights after my husband. It has nearly cut my bill in half.

Wash clothes on medium loads and get them done all at once, no half fills or small loads. AJ has enough clothes to go two weeks without doing her laundry.

Hang out my jeans to dry instead of the dryer.

Re: Okay - so we all know money is tight...

We use BJs brand wipes and they work great! Pampers seem to work best for DS, but we buy them at BJs and use coupons to save.

We don't buy puffs (he eats cheerios) or diced baby food, I can dice things myself Chat Icon I do buy the purees though, I tried a few times to make it myself and DS ddn't like the texture Chat Icon

We accept hand me downs! I haven't had to buy him much in the way of cothes because our neighbor and my siblings have given us clothes! We were also given the PNP, bouncy seat, exersaucer, swing, jumperoo and some toys as hand me downs.

Craigslist, we found his outdoor play toys on craigslist and saved a lot!

I hunt down Huggies Diapers coupons and try to catch them on sale in CVS. I buy CVS or Target brand sensitive wipes (they work SO much better than the Pampers and Huggies wipes). I buy milk and juices in Trader Joe's....a gallon of organic milk at Trader Joe's is $5.99!!!! DS eats what we eat so I save a lot on that alone. DS's clothes I buy at the Gap, Gymboree and other brand name stores on sale only or if I have coupons. I also try to hit up Marshalls and I make out like a fat rat everytime I leave there.

We loved the Costco wipes, and still use them now even though my kids have been out of diapers for 1.5 years.

Organic Milk at Costco

I buy carter's pj's at Costco, they are like $6 I beleive and they last.

I also only buy Disney pj pals on sale for $5 at the end of the season and save them for the next year. I have ones from 3 years ago that are in perfect condition. I refuse to pay more the $6 or $7 on pj's.

Kohls Jumping Beans clothes and Circo clothes at Target.

I buy bulk meds at Costco as well as detergent there. More upfront but lasts forever.

Target does this as well. One time they had some brand of cold cuts (Hillshire farms) and get a pack of cheese slices free.

A lot of the times it with milk, buy 3 cereals and get a gallon of milk free.

I've also seen it where they did buy PB and get a loaf of bread free

I love Kirkland Wipes!! I don't really like any of the generic diapers, but I don't buy expensive ones. I loved Pampers Swaddlers and used them to size 2. Then when he changed into size 3 I started using Huggies Snug and Dry and have had no problems with them. I also use regular Pampers (not cruisers) and like them too. (Buy in bulk at BJs)

Target and Carter's for her clothes.

Diapers at BJ's with coupons.

The biggest tip I have is not just to buy 5 boxes of diapers because they are on sale.It may seem economical, but having 5 boxes of diapers is not always the best idea, kwim?

my point (sorry i got cut off - emma started kicking the laptop)...

that they change sizes pretty quickly - so you could be stuck with 3 boxes of size 2 and the baby moved to size 3. not a bargain if you can't use them - or have anywhere to store them!

Sign up for all formula companies. Have your family member sign up too.

look for formula samples.

I got so many samples for from the mommies posting on the sell/swap/buy thread. I saved $$$$

Shop with coupons, coupons, coupons.

- BJs was the cheapers for diapers
- Target was the cheapest for Organic baby food jar
- Making your own food and freeze is the cheapest
- Get membership to zoo/aquarium, etc.... it pays just after a few entries.
- Shop sales ONLY
- Make an inventory to DC child and once you have reached the number of clothes you need for the season... STOP BUYING at all cost!!
- Buy mix and match outfit
- map your errands to save gas.
- do walkA with DC and stroller outside/park. Cheaper than walking at the mall. Too much temptation
- Do playgroup with mommies.
- Buy gifs for birthdays, etc.. during the holidays when you get the best deals and store them for their next birthday

Re: Okay - so we all know money is tight...

- Bulk Detergent...and I use the KIRKLAND brand free & Clear from Costco...been using from Day 1, and DD (who has sensitive skin) has had no problems...and the bottle lasts FOREVER!

- Walmart sells cereal cheaper than the grocery store...and they take coupons

- stock up on $1 coupons, and when stop and shop has their "doubler" coupons in their circular, stock up on basics (if you have $1 coupons)

- Trader Joe's organic foods are cheaper, and taste better - totally worth the drive!!

- DD is in daycare, and I have bought a lot of Garanimals from Walmart and Circo clothes...they're cheap, and while they might not fit the best, it doesn't matter if they get ruined...

- Children's place.com clearance...their sales are AMAZING...you can get a coupon on retailmenot.com and shipping is only $5!!!

We buy in bulk usually at BJ's (diapers, tissues, bread (freeze the other loaf), chicken (freeze in portions), dog food, etc)

DH and I do netflix and get generic microwave popcorn for movie nights (rarely go out to movies now)

Reuse plastic bags to pick up dog poop or throw out diapers in, or to put in diaper bag to throw out diapers when we're out

changed light bulbs to eco-friendly ones

when we remember Chat Icon unplug appliances

check out craigslist, consignment sales and here for stuff Chat Icon (not just baby stuff, but even like halloween costumes)

Got rid of our landline (got a 3rd cell phone to leave at home for emergencies--cheaper than paying for the landline)

sometimes having smorgasboard dinners, to try and not waste food

Have DD watch dogs wrestle as free entertainment Chat Icon

bring cans back, some places plastic bags too

ah ok. Well i was thinking buying two boxes you need and two boxes up if youre that close. AJ flew through NB and size 1 and stayed in 1-2 for a few months then she was in 3 and has been size three for a LOOOOONG time.

I dont see her moving out of those for at least another month or more. Given that she goes through about 96 diapers in 2 weeks (1box) then 2boxes is one month and four boxes would be a god send for giving me at least a month and a half or more of not buying diapers.

Also since she's in daycare its a whole pack that goes to them (48diapers) which usually lasts 7-8 daycare days. that means those 48diapers are not in my home to 'lean' on so in a box of 96 i lose 1/2 my box from the get go.

So for me.. buying two boxes would work only if its on sale otherwise its just sitting in my house.

I thought you'd say not to buy so that if another sale comes along you can take advantage.

oh yeah - craigslist for formula!!!!! (and of course the buy/sell/swap thread)

i have gotten so much formula from craigslist - i honestly can't tell you the last time i paid full price for it! many people get the kind we use (soy) in their samples of Similac - so they offer it dirt cheap or for free!
