Re: OK...I am stepping in my flame retardant suit, but I need to ask a question about "going organic"

We use organic dairy products for Kiera. I've read that experts feel that non-organic dairy products bring on puberty at an earlier age which is why we see more and more 11 year old girls with boobs. My feeling is organic doesn't hurt, so why not use it. Yes it costs me $20 more a week in groceries but to me it's worth it.

I don't believe the argument of we all grew up on non-organic and we're fine. Because we are not fine. Many of us also grew up in a time of no car seats and no seat belts. And yes we'll all here and alive but would you for a second travel with your child now without being in a car seat? There are many kids that have died because of improper car safety, those kids, those families are not fine. Just because we're ok doesn't mean that other people won't suffer from it. The thing with cancer is they don't know what causes it. It's not like AIDS that you can say ok this causes it so I won't do that. You can't say that about cancer. What you can do is read up on studies that are being conducted and make your own decision as to what you think is right for you and your family. It doesn't mean that you are going to prevent cancer but again it's not going to hurt so why not do it?

It's all about the choices that we as individuals want to make. I don't think I'm preventing Kiera from getting cancer by drinking organic milk. But I will say that she is growing at a very normal and healthy rate. She's tall and thin something you don't see too often in a lot of kids. I know she's still young so who knows what will happen but I see some of the kids around her age and they are just giants. I'm not saying that non-organic products do that but I also can't ignore the possible correlation. So for now I will stick with the occasional organic products that we use because to me it's worth the money.

We are not an organic family in that DH and I do not eat organic and I am not 100% consistent with it for DS.

I do get many things organic for him but to be honest...my motivation has been more of the nature ingredients over the pesticide issue. I want to reduce his sugar intake and the preservatives used in shelved food for now. Therefore I will use fruits and vegetables that are not organic. At some point he will have to have exposure to sugars and otehr ingredients since we can't have a 'do as I say, not as I do" mentality. I personally just wanted him to taste the food in as close to a natural flavor as possible for the start.

With that said...I do respect those families that go organic.

This is pretty much how we are. I try to buy organic things for DS when I can, but I am more interested in natural ingredients. Now that DS is eating more than the purees I used to make for him I am finding it harder - but I think it is just a matter or getting used to it.

This thread has been a great resource to see different sides of the story without getting out of control. Chat Icon

Well today its been announced on CNN that the largest Beef distributer in the US which distributes all the beef to the nations schools recalled over 39 MILLION pounds of beef. The largest recall in US history.

And they "hope" to get all the contaminated beef.

ANd whats worse is the USDA did go to this factory and found nothing wrong, an undercover investigation into animal cruelty discovered it ....

You would think the USDA would monitor the place that serves all our nations schools more closely?

This is the reason I will only feed organic meats to My son.

The beef is from the past 2 years, and it is assumed that the majority of it has already been ingested.Chat Icon

I feed DD mostly organic because why not? I FEEL better and while others ask why should I, I say why not. Less chemicals the better IMO.

We don't eat organic. Honestly for one reason-It's way too expensive compartively to it's non organic counterparts. We're not willing to pay $4.99 for a 5lb bag of pototoes.

To each is own.
There's NO RIGHT and NO WRONG about this.

We are on a TIGHT budget too and get most of the organic stuff from WalMart, ShopRite and Stop & Shop. I use coupons too. The WalMArt by me has Stoneyfield organic whole milk for less than $3 per container. Less than regular milk at Stop & Shop.

The point being, if you want to go organic, but cannot justify the cost...you can do it if you shop around and go to WalMart. HTH Chat Icon
