OMG - She's so FAT!
Sorry - no picture...but seriously...
I've been wondering how many people would be offended by that subject line...and how many people find the subject line to be a perfectly acceptable way to describe how someone looks.
It seems that bashing the "too skinny" is acceptable...and even OK...but no one mentions the other side of the spectrum.
Especially if people - who claim to have concern for the unhealthiness of the "too skinny" - are you just as concerned with the "too fat"?

Hmmm something to think about I guess. But I guess the way society thinks its rude to call someone fat but not rude to call them skinny.

Re: OMG - She's so FAT!
great points. I would be very disturbed if someone used that as a subject title. I guess when you are overweight, being underweight would seem like a dream. Clothes would fit, bathing suit shopping would not cause anxiety attacks...

I know...and I wonder why.
I find the scrutiny to be really offensive and rude, to say the least.

But being UNDERweight is just as unhealthy as being OVERweight - there is nothing easy about it.

oh no, I am sure it is not easy to be underweight. I am sure it is a struggle. I think most people have little or no awareness since they were never on that side of the scale.

Re: OMG - She's so FAT!
I think it's appropriate for let's say Anna Nicole (way back when):
But not really for Courtney Love, though she has put on pounds:

Its more acceptable in society, And its like the new "fad" and everyone feels thats why they should do.

Re: OMG - She's so FAT!
Honestly, I think because the stereotype of fat people is that they are lazy and eat too much. Quite negative!
But what is the stereotype for skinny people?

Re: OMG - She's so FAT!
Why are people proud to be a size 0 but not so happy about a size 16 or 18? Society I think...We have an extremely heavy person in my office who yesterday broke a chair during a meeting. I couldn't help but think how hard her life must be, not fitting in chairs or in airplane seats...I don't have that kind of sympathy for really thin people, though maybe I should...

While I do agree with you 100% on your original posting, I just wanted to add on a seperate note that from what I have heard there are far more health risks to being overweight than underweight ---barring of course extreme problems like eating disorders.
Also, on the subject of social etiquettes: in the movie "Supersize Me" they made a point about how it's so common to tell smokers that they should quit because it's so bad for their health...But people stop short at telling over-weight people that their fat-a$$ doesn't need those chips/fries/etc.

both aren't healthy by any means....and i think it is sad that society has more "empathy" for the Fat and not the excessively skinny....

Re: OMG - She's so FAT!
I would say that no one likes to hear that they've gained weight, so it's never appropriate to hear. However, when someone doesn't take care of themselves, it's only evident that it'll happen. But, if someone develops a health issue, or gains weight by correcting another issue (ie substance abuse), then it's more inappropriate to make fun.

I actually saw a Dateline show recently or something where doctors even felt uncomfortable telling heavy people they were too fat and needed to diet to be healthy. I think it's a matter of not wanting to offend..

i have to disagree again....there are PLENTY of serious health risks for the extremely skinny...or for those who have disorders that got them there...

Re: OMG - She's so FAT!
because people strive to be skinny, and they take it overboard- and thats the example and role models that young girls are looking up to these days. People dont strive to be 'fat', nor do they put pressure on others to be 'fat' either. Yes, an extreme in either direction is unhealthy, and should be helped. Myabe youre offended because youre skinny, but people are naturally skinny and im sure it stinks if youre completely underweight, BUT no one can argue that these stars are "naturally" like that in any way. theyre Dying to be thin... literally. and thats where the problem lies.... not in them just being 'naturally underweight'.
and Yes,,, there were posts recently abou how "Fat" courtney love had gotten, etc... so all bases have been covered

I guess my sympathy is directed at her because life just isn't made for really heavy people. Our chairs, our cars, our airplane seats, our clothes...I never have to think about those things. One time we met for a meeting in a classroom where the chairs had the desk things attached, and she got stuck. They had to get her out and then each meeting bring in a folding chair just for her.

There was a doctor on GMA that was being sued for telling a patient she was obese and needed to lose weight for her health.
