Posted by Colleen9304 To whoever said it, yes, I am sensitive to it. I am naturally thin and I physically cringe when I hear the word "skinny". It is usually said with such contempt, it's hard not to be sensitive to it.
Thank you for posting this.
I too cringe at the work "skinny".
I've been battling these fat v. skinny ideas forever. I weigh 98lbs. I'm sure that if a picture of me was posted in what Mischa Barton was wearing there would be people on this site that would say 'ewwwwwwww she's so skinny . she must NOT eat, there's no way she could be that skinny and eat (and not purge).'
Well, that's crap. I eat plenty (just ask Elbee and Kelly - they've seen it first hand ). I just happen to eat healthy and have been blessed with a very quick metabolism.
I'm not even that extreme a case. I've had 2 friends during my lifetime that were constantly ridiculed for being too skinny. They were asked by teachers if they were anorexic and made fun of by students for being so skinny. Neither were and both have a number of self-esteem issues due to it. If they had been 'fat', I really believe they wouldn't have received the ridicule that they did, at least not from teachers telling them their body weight was a source of concern.
Weight is a sensitive topic Period. It's not fair for someone else to say "oh, no, it's ok to say something about how skinny someone is, that's ok. But don't you dare talk about how 'fat' someone is, that's just wrong." Why the double standard?
I can sympathize with you Eileen. I am 105 lbs and people are constantly telling me I am too skinny, I must not eat, etc. It is very annoying.
Another one !! I'd kill to have your body, and frame!!!
But would you kill to have the constant ridicule and rude comments? As someone who is 5'2" and 98lbs, I've heard it all. I've been thin all my life and people have always made it a point to make a snide comment about my body. I do not have an eating disorder, I've never been on a diet I eat whatever I want I just don't have a large appetite so what do you want from me!? I am self conscious about my body because of the lifetime of mean comments that have been said to me. I am not the type of person to wear revealing clothing, I prefer to just cover up my body so most people won't notice how thin I am to avoid the stupid things people say. It is rude and insensitive but unfortunately society does not recognize that.

but why do i feel the need to defend myself here?? i haven't insulted anyone on this board.

I think it's fair to say no one has the perfect life or perfect body and we should all be more aware of the comments we make to others and try to be more sensitive to each others feelings. Agreed?

i get annoyed with the skinny bashing. i'm as thin as they come and its just the way i am. i eat what i want and it just gets burned off. there are people who are small and we are not anorexic. the lindsay lohans and nicole ritchies of the world make it harder for us.

because people strive to be skinny, and they take it overboard- and thats the example and role models that young girls are looking up to these days. People dont strive to be 'fat', nor do they put pressure on others to be 'fat' either. Yes, an extreme in either direction is unhealthy, and should be helped. Myabe youre offended because youre skinny, but people are naturally skinny and im sure it stinks if youre completely underweight, BUT no one can argue that these stars are "naturally" like that in any way. theyre Dying to be thin... literally. and thats where the problem lies.... not in them just being 'naturally underweight'.
and Yes,,, there were posts recently abou how "Fat" courtney love had gotten, etc... so all bases have been covered
people "striving" to be skinny is completely different than those grossly underweight. People who are usually (those grossly underweight that is) have a disorder...JUST LIKE those who are obsese...AND NEITHER are something people "strive" for. Yes stars are in the limelight...and are criticized for EVERY REASON UNDER THE SUN... Theya re expected to be perfect and are criticized when they aren't....Gosh a star can't hold a friggin Coke can without being judged...
BUT to say that the Fat threads have equaled the "OMG LOOK HOW SKINNY" threads....is wrong... But i don't care...a good point was made IMO.
How easily people can criticize the skinny and you do not see nearly as many "OMG LOOK HOW FAT....threads
food for thought!

Re: OMG - She's so FAT!
Posted by Colleen9304 It seems OK for people to ask me if I eat or if I'm a size 0.
The infamous Size question . Would I ask someone on the larger end of the spectrum what size they are? No, that is unthinkable! However, I get it all the time "What size do you wear ?". If I am caught off-guard, I will answer honestly. When I tell people, I have literally had people say "WHAT?!?! Is that even a real size?"
No, I just made it up
No matter what other people might think, it is just as rude to b!tch out someone who is thin for being skinny as it is someone who is overweight for being 'fat'.
Oh and Colleen - great points about the assumed b!tchiness of skinny girls. Why does being thin equal being a b!tch? And, to the same token, why does being fat not?

when disneygirl quoted me...i thought she was directly responding to me, and what she said made it seem like i offended her. which was not my intention at all. also, where she stated that we should try to be more aware of the comments we make to others, and be more sensitive to each others feelings. i didn't make any comments directly at anyone on here, just gave my opinion on the pic that was posted.

Re: OMG - She's so FAT!
Being someone who is "fat" and has been her whole life, I guess the honest answer is yes it's a bit rude, but since I don't take things personally (anymore LOL) I wouldn't say I'd be totally offended by that title.
Weight is and always will be a sensitive topic anywhere you go, it's all in how you mean something, if it's in general conversation, it's fine, aren't the words fat. skinny, tall, short just adjectives?
Edited to add:
To add to the idea that obesity or underweightness is an illness, I totally disagree, yes people with eating disorders or warped body images have a mental issue going on, but with the overweight, alot of it has to do with how we eat, if we are active and our genes.
About 10 year's ago I read a study in the Journal of Medicine that stated, people who are morbidly obese may be missing a gene that turns off the feast/famine button in our brain.
Ages ago there was no Target or Super Walmart, or Walbaums, people had to hunt and gather their food (activity) fresh food was something that was feasted upon since there were really no means of storage so the body learned to store energy (fat) in the body for fuel during the famine or low food source times.
As we evolved and food was easier to attain, our body systems adapted and over all the human race stopped storing fat since food was more readily available, but in the morbidly obese (300lbs and over) the mechanisim that was developed in the rest of the population was never activated.
To over come this those in this catagory had to be twice if not three times as active in order to compensate for the genes lack of activity. Which of course in this day and age of cars, and supermarkets doesnt really happen.

i agree with you- thats what i was trying to say.. the theyre TWO different things. There are people who are Naturally skinny, and those that are naturally overweight- and there are those that are everything in between. But i think when people post the threads about the celebs, its not b/c theyre 'naturally' skinny, its because most of them have had DRASTIC weight loss/gain in a SHOT amount of time-- and theres nothing natural about it. The same way that (just for Example) many people have may not have the perfect nose. BUT when a celeb gets a bad nose job, or a bad boob job, or a bad liposuction job.. its the drastic change that stands out, and people are inclined to comment on it or talk about it. Im not saying that its right- i'm just saying that its a completely different thing, and just b/c people are commenting on the drastic weight change w/ celebs, does Not mean that they are making Blanket statements about anyone who has ever been under or over weight before.

Sorry but here you are wrong... Obesity...is in fact an illness... Sure you can have what people like to term the "fat/skinny gene" ... and predisposed to a certain body frame But in essence...both sides of the sepctrum are just that...DISORDERS.
it isn't all in the genes...NOT by any means

Well I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one, if the medical community can't agree how can we? I still stand by my statement.

the medical community pretty much does agree... and although there is some predisposition.. it is considered an illness Medically and psychiatrically

Re: OMG - She's so FAT!
To all that were offended by the skinny post...I never said anything negative about it, just that she was skinny. I never assumed she had an eating disorder or anything like that. I actually said she looked good, just very skinny. I am skinny naturally and get asked if I eat at all (and I do eat a lot) and it doesn't bother me. Sorry to anyone it did. I'm sure a lot of us have posted about someone being fat, skinny, ugly, looking bad or something negative related in some sort. Some people are more sensitive to certain things than others. I have never said anything intentially on here to hurt or offend anyone.
