Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
I am having 65 adults and 10 kids for my son's 1st birthday. We are having it at a location, not at my home. (Don't know if this makes a difference)
A friend of mine said that the parties she has been to they always open the gifts after cake. I don't want to be rude but I think it might be too much for him as he still just wants to play with the wrapping paper.
What is the norm? Should I open them at the party or take them home and open them there?
TIA!

Re: Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
I think it all depends on the time. I went to a family's 1st b-day party that was at a place. Since it was in a restaurant you only have so much time so close family members were invited back to the house for coffee and they opened the gifts there.
For my DS we're having it at my parent's house. Figured after cake we'll open it and whoever wants to stay and hang around will and others will go.

I don't. It's way too chaotic. They can't appreciate the gifts with everyone around, and I have a zillion other things to focus on. I like to do it when everyone is gone.
If I had small parties of 20 family members or so, then I would do it with them - but that's not the case for us.

ITA...plus I feel like things could get mixed up in the chaos and I wouldn't know who each gift was from and couldn't acknowledge people appropriately in their Thank You cards.

We just had a birthday party for my dd with about 15 adults and 8 kids. My MIL wanted her to open the gifts after cake and my mother encouraged it as well. I didn't want her opening the gifts and I should've put my foot down and said no, but of course I didn't.
It was so chaotic my head was pounding. never ever ever again.

Re: Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
Oh god please spare your guests the boredom of watching a 1 year old open gifts and the torture for yourself of having to fend off kids from every gift he opens. Bring them home and don't worry about it. It took so long to open all of my DD's gifts that I can't imagine even attempting to have done it at the party.

Re: Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
I did for 1 and 2 b/c they were at home (and at his family party for 3)
But our parties are not nearly that big!
I didn't want to open his presents at the kiddie party but my bossy a$$ sister insisted on it (don't ask )

Re: Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
We didn't for DDs 1st or 2nd birthday parties, but they were both outside of the house.
I've only been to one birthday party in the last several years where I've seen that done, and I was trying to keep my DD away from the toys at that one.... so I vote no!

Re: Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
I did it at my son's 1st Birthday Party. There were appx. 60 people but since it was his first birthday party we did it anyway. It was cute, memorable and he had a lot of fun.

Re: Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
Thanks Ladies!
I will bring them home and open them. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being rude.
I know some family might have an issue but I will take Erica's suggestion and if they would like to come back to my house and see him(more likely me) open his gifts they are welcome to.

Re: Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
For a one year old party I wouldn't. For ds' party we opened gifts after everyone left with the exception of the immediate family.

Re: Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
For the most part, I'd say no. For DD's two birthday parties, we've opened the gifts at the very, very end of the party, when most guests have already left. My close family members hound me to open the gifts, so I know they're the ones who are interested. My cousin even sits there with a pad of paper and writes who gave what gift, like a shower!
ETA: The parties are at my house. I definitely would NOT do it at a place.

Re: Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
We have thrown 4 birthday parties (3 for DS1 and 1 for DS2) and we have always come back home, put the kids down for nap and opened the gifts! This year, for DS1's 4th, we will let him open them at home himself.
In my opinion, the party itself is very overwhelming for the little ones. No need to add toys and paper and stuff to the mix!

Re: Opening Gifts at Birthday Party
I definitely WOULD NOT open the gifts until you are home without the guests. It becomes chaotic and the other children are going to want to open presents too. My SIL does this and it is always a friggin disaster.
