Parenting is so different these days

I was just thinking that there are so many things that our parents did that are now considered horrible.
It is great there is research done on different parenting techniques & products so that children will have a safer upbringing but sometimes it's just no fun.
I was just reading a post that mentioned sippy cups may not be good for a babys development (which I could see why now that I think of it) but there are so many things that are forbidden.
Walkers, putting food in the bottle, TV, blankets, bumpers, stuffed animals in the crib, ar seat facing the back - too many rules & no fun Chat Icon
Like I said I know it's for their own good but I just had to get that out- thanks ladiesChat Icon

Re: Parenting is so different these days

***disclaimer- the following is my opinion. All parents should do what they feel comfortable doing....

Some things, like walkers for example, can still be used but with certain things in mind. Don't have an open staircase that the child can "walk" down, don't always put the child in it, they need the freedom of being on their own without all the support they get from the walker.

Same thing with blankets. I got so many for ds. I used them during the day when he would nap. in the car after he was buckled in, on the floor when at my in-laws house. I used sleep sacks at night for him. I just within the past month or so started using a blanket on his legs on super chilly nights (he is 14.5 months. I have a toddler sleep sack for him now) and he has a couple of small stuffed animals and a few board books in his crib. When he wakes up in the morning he SIL play for a bit, so he needs something!!!

Them staying rear facing is a big one for me. DD was always small, so I didn't feel comfortable changing her until she was over the old recommendation of 20 pounds. She was about 16 months. Now that the recommendation is 2 years old, DS will be staying rear facing until at least that. When I registered for a car seat I specifically chose one that had higher weight limits. (Up to 40 pounds rear facing, up to 65 pounds in the harness and up to 100 pounds as a belted booster.)

Things might not seem like fun, but safety in my book is more important. Do I do things that are against the "rules" yes I do. But it is what I feel comfortable with doing.
