What is your childs "currency" as Dr Phil calls it. In other words what punishment works for your DS/DD? We have made the switch from time out to time in his room and toy taken for the day or lose TV, I still find him getting in trouble for the same things over and over. Especially being overly rough with his little sister (DD is 1) not very aggressive, but he hugs her and knocks her down stuff like that. Jumping on the furniture. Not listening. Etc. What works for your DC of this age?

we read a few books at bedtime. He gets a warning for whatever behavior (usually not serious, like not listening/following directions) that he's going to lose books. if he persists, I will take away books at night. I don't really like doing that, but I haven't had to do it that often. If it's something more serious, like throwing something, he gets an immediate time-out and no books, without a warning!

To be honest, I don't think any of it has decreased the occurrences though.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Whatever the most immediate "next thing" is.

If he acts up in the morning, it's no DS (which he usually plays when I'm getting ready).

If he acts up in the afternoon, it's no dessert after dinner.

If he acts up at bedtime it's no stories.

But I always, no matter what, make sure we talk about what he's doing wrong and if it is a silly or smart thing.

He usually only has to be told once to stop something in that moment.

But he'll do the same thing several days in a row. So I'll nip it in the bud if I can:

"Remember last two nights you cried and carried on at bedtime and didn't get stories? Are you going to do that again tonight?"

Etc.

I did the same thing - with the exception of the no book as a punishment.

I would say they have to go to bed earlier the next day.

Now that they're older it's all about screentime (iPod, computer, TV) and the risk of an earlier bedtime seems pretty tragic.

we still do TO's

but taking away a favorite toy (right now it's a stuffed Mario) or computer time works pretty well.

Ryan is sent to his room. This is the only thing that gets through to him.
