Re: Parents of Late Talkers

DS was talking later that I expected him too (I consider it late although I don't know if an evaluator would).

Honestly, when people talk about their kids being early talkers as a sign of intelligence (and not simply because they are excited about it) makes me just assume they are trying to make OTHER people think that. And quite frankly I am only concerned with my DS and what he is doing. I know that he is very smart (his receptive language is ridiculous IMO, but again, I'm not an expert in the field Chat Icon) and that's good enough for me.

It does occasionally irk me, but in the "whatever Chat Icon " kind of way Chat Icon Chat Icon

Keep in mind that Einstein didn't utter a word until he was 4! So there.

Re: Parents of Late Talkers

My BIL didn't talk until he was three. He is now a successful Naval Architect and Professional Engineer. He also has a rather active social life.

I do not see a correalation between talking early and intelligence but will say I may be guilty of comments similiar to what you have mentioned. DD is a very early talker and small for her age. For this reason, I get many comments on how smart she is because of her early speech. I tend to thank them, agree that she is smart and say we are fortunate. However, I don't think that she is smart just because she talked early. KWIM

Re: Parents of Late Talkers (Update)

My DD was an early talker. She said her first word at about 7 months. She was speaking in sentences by her first birthday & having full on conversations before 2. She's 4 now & speaks perfectly & clearly. She does happen to be a bright child, but I absolutely do NOT believe that children who don't speak as early cannot be just as bright. She has a friend who also has always spoken fairly well for his age, but is still behind her in that department. He is an equally bright child.

My son is 10 months. He says "mama", "dada" & "yay". He is definately behind his sister in speech & who knows, he may end up being a late talker (still too early to tell obviously), but at 10 months, he's starting to walk & he does a whole ton of other physical things. I think he's a smart kid.

I think too many people don't think before speaking. No 2 children develop the same. Not doing something "on time" does not mean a child won't go on to be the brightest in their class one day. It's also ridiculous to think that because the child is speaking a little later that the parents must be lacking someplace (not reading, etc) Chat Icon

Re: Parents of Late Talkers (Update)

My ds did not talk until he was well over 3. My husband and I were nervous wrecks that something was wrong with him. Now at 6, his vocabulary is well above his age level, he loves everything scientific and is just so smart (at least dh and i think so)! Some children are just late bloomers.
