Ped visit today didn't go so well...
She is very nervous that Andrew never eats meat. We are going back in a couple of weeks for bloodwork to make sure he is not anemic, etc. She told me to get him to eat soy and beans. She also put him on more vitamins with more Iron in them.
I am so nervous. Has anyone else gone through this?
And she also told me that I should try going back to baby food meat. Tried it. That didn't work
I honestly didn't think it was that big of deal until today. But now something has to be done
Oh and he is 23 lbs 13 oz. So little but she said he is gaining so that is all that matters.

Re: Ped visit today didn't go so well...
My DD only recently starting eating meat. I wouldn't worry too much. She did eat chicken nuggets on occasion but that's it. Her ped was never overly concerned. She's growing and meeting milestones just fine. Don't panic. I think there's too much emphasis on children's weight and having a particular diet, it makes the parents crazy.

Michael does not eat meat (meatballs, steak, etc.) only chicken. My ped never said that there was anything wrong with that. As long as he is eating and is gaining weight that is all that matters.

Re: Ped visit today didn't go so well...
I did not eat meat as a child & did not for most of my life. I only recently began eating meat b/c I am anemic (because of genetics, not from a lack of meat) and I had to stop taking the iron pills for a bit. I am weaning myself off of meat again.
If you are a non-meat eater, you do have to get your protein elsewhere. I would suggest that you go to a holistic or a nutritionist, who deals with non-meat meal planning on a regular basis.

Steven only eats chicken and sometimes beef...only if it's a meatball.
i think as long as you try to get the protein in him from other things, you should be OK.

Stephanie/sunny posted about Katie's anemia. You may want to FM her for some advice.
Do you let him help make food? I know that helped us get Joseph to eat some food he'd never try.

As long as he is eating and is gaining weight that is all that matters. same here. Aly is 20 mths and rarely will eat any type of red meat. she will eat a hamburger maybe once a month or so but other than that, only chicken! Ped. is not worried about it and says she'll outgrow this phase.....She is 24 lb as well but has always been on the smaller side.

Don't drive yourself crazy. So long as he is eating and gaining weight, then he is okay! Just try and supplement that iron with other iron enriched foods!

Don't worry about Andrew's weight. Matthew is the same age as Andrew and he is 21 lbs and I think 7 ounces and the doctor is not concerned.
Will he eat chicken nuggets?

By any chance, did you see Dr. B? She is an alarmist.
Nicholas is 6 and hardly eats any meat. I try to give him other foods that are high in iron and protein (though he will eat chicken, but that's about it).
Don't worry. Andrew is gaining and staying on his curve. That's what's most important.

I buy the applegate farms turkey dogs - freeze them...and before you cook them up use a veggie peeler to peel the skin - nice and easy!
eta: I also steam chicken and then grind it up in the food processor and add rice and ground up carrots and my DD loves that.

Re: Ped visit today didn't go so well...
Its not that he's not eating meat - its that he's not eating enough foods with iron and protein. Cailen is vegetarian and I make sure he eats a well balanced diet - thats the important thing!
If he's a picky eater, then you are going to have trouble feeding him anything - maybe instead of focusing on meat, maybe focus on other iron-rich foods...

Re: Ped visit today didn't go so well...
I can understand wanting to make sure that he is getting enough protein, but you can do that without eating meat. Lentils are a great source. Also tofu, cheese and yogurt are all great sources. For iron dark leafy vegetables are the best source that I know of. Good luck!!!

for lentils, I make a thick lentil soup and pour it on his whole wheat macaroni, i use red lentils...it looks like mac and cheese.
