Pedicure question
I know some people say not to get massaged on your feet, or tell the pedicurist what part of the foot not to touch, but what part is it? Can I get my legs massaged? Just wondering before I go in, because it is summer time and my feet look HORRIBLE!

Re: Pedicure question
I think the main area that they say to avoid is the ankles, but just tell the girl to massage very gently. Most don't know the exact spot to press to make you go into labor.
Go and enjoy!!

It's the back of the ankles.

Re: Pedicure question
I've gone to the foot spa place like 3 or 4 times now and I've also gone for pedicures and paid for the extra 10 min massage a bunch of times. I had no idea I wasn't supposed to. What is the reasoning behind not getting foot massages?

I didn't know there was, but I have heard to avoid massages while pregnant because it can potentially cause preterm labor. didn't think a pedicure qualified as a real "massage"

There are certain pressure points on the backs of the ankles that are believed to induce labor.

Pedicure question
I got a pedicure/massage at 38.5 weeks and it did not bring on labor and I was actually very far along (60% effaced and 3 cm dilated). I wouldn't stress it!

Re: Pedicure question
I have been pregnant through the summer with each of my pregnancies and I have never avoided pedicures. I never asked the nail person to not do something, in fact I have even paid for the extra 10 minute foot massage If you are concerned I would just ask them to stay away from the ankle which is the spot they say is the issue.

I went around 39 weeks with DD and my BP spiked and I had to go straight to the doctor. When that one wore off I went again at 41+6 and went into labor that night but I never thought there was really a connection.

Thanks! Def good to know. I'm surprised no one mentioned this to me at all. I guess I won't be getting massaged again until after 36 weeks. If I go into labor after 36 weeks, I'll be ok with that

Pedicure question
You can get massages from massage places, like massage envy - they just need to know that you are pregnant and they will do a prenatal massage... speaking of which, has anyone done this?

I work in a spa, we need a doctors note to do a prenatal massage. I don't know if that changes per place.

Many don't (or say they don't) as long as you are out of your 1st trimester. Strange....
My understanding is that as long as you are not high risk, massage is OK. Is that not accurate?

Pedicure question
I'm also a nail technician, this is a excerpt from a trade magazine (Nails Magazine) :
> BLOOD CLOTS/RISK OF GOING INTO LABOR: The lower leg massage that goes with a pedicure can feel wonderful for a pregnant woman, but it can also pose a danger if she is susceptible to blood clots, as massage can dislodge them. Recent studies suggest that a woman’s overall risk for blood clots during pregnancy is six times greater than in non-pregnant women. It’s a good idea to skip the massage if your client has a history of blood clots or varicose veins. Likewise, be careful about massaging the feet. Some anecdotal evidence (based on the principles of reflexology) suggests that stimulating certain pressure points around the foot and ankle can cause the uterus to begin contracting, thus inducing an early labor. The area between the anklebone and heel is most susceptible.
Some of my clients ask to skip it, if I know they are pregnant I tend to go a little light in some areas.

Interesting! I knew about the pressure points, but didn't know about the blood clots, guess I'll skip the pedi massage for now and just get my tootsies looking pretty.

I can't really answer that, I'm not sure. I think the doctors note just gives them reassurance that you aren't high risk and everything should be okay, instead of taking your word for it. But I really don't know, I'm not a massage therapist.

Re: Pedicure question
I prefer to stay away from prenatal massages anyway. They don't apply any pressure at all. I would rather not pay all that money to be pet for an hour. I tried it once and left feeling disappointed. I'll just wait until 36 weeks to go back to reflexology. It's only like 10 more weeks

Re: Pedicure question
I go every other week for my pedicure and go for the extra 10 minute massage. I did the same with my last pregnancy as well. I went for a prenatal massage a week before my due date last time and asked the masseuse to hit the pressure point because I was ready to go and still nothing happened. Of course do what you're comfortable with but I'm not concerned about the massages at my nail salon.
