Photog moms - issues with lighting and blurriness-UPDATE: OMG- The Speedlight is AMAZING!

I took some pictures of DD against a white backdrop. The shadows were awful. I did not plan on investing in lighting right now and am not sure this is the only method to fix the situation. I am getting a speedlight but am not sure this will be enough to solve the problem. Just wondering what I may need to do to fix what is going wrong.

Also I am having issues with blurriness. When I am shooting pics of DD, she clearly is not sitting still. The pictures are coming out blurry at times and am not sure how to resolve this.

I think I really need to take a class- I am SUCH an AMATEUR!

UPDATE: Picked up my speedlight last night and OMG what a difference! The pictures come out a MILLION times better!

You can try to remove the shadows by making your own reflector. First of all, I would NOT use the on-camera flash. I would use natural light if at all possible. You can make a reflector by using either a plain piece of white posterboard, and covering a piece of posterboard with tin foil.

What kind of camera are you shooting with? The blurriness can be that your shutter speed is not fast enough, but if you are not using lighting and are indoors, using a fast shutter speed can result in under-exposed pictures.

I highly recommend a speedlight! Its all I ever use for lighting and it works great!

just a speedlight in my dark house:

Until you get one get near a large open window or even set up your backdrop outside in a shaded area. You can get cheap reflectors or even make some. I also know there are some DIY ways to bounce the on board flash for a decent result. Try google for tips.

do you know your settings? Are you shooting in manual mode or automatic?

I shoot in auto right now since I am so wet behind the ears that I feel like I can't shoot fast enough in manual to keep up with DD.

DEF. need a class and to read my books on photography still . . .

a Great Book is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson

Try learning to shoot outdoors. Try the camera out in Aperture Priority and Shutter priority mode first and learn that before switching over to full manual mode.

I'm not sure if you can put that specific camera into Auto-ISO but you can try that as well.

Once you can shoot outdoors in shaded areas then try shooting indoors with window light.

This age is hard, they won't sit still and pose... You can practice on a doll inside and play with your settings...

Thanks for the suggestions! I have the book so I will have to do some reading. I just picked up my speedlight and can't wait to figure it out!

Just a quick note on the speedlight - you should be pointing it up at the ceiling rather than directly at your daughter.

Good advice! I keep mine up and tilted back at a 45 degree angle.

So the speedlight seems to be a GREAT start. I have used it aimed at the ceiling and it is just PERFECT!

I also like using the Gary Fong diffuser on my external flash.
