Tara- the AF-S 50mm lens are big bucks
I asked my instructor and we can use the less expensive ones, we'd just need to focus it ourselves! Thats what I plan on doing- can't afford $500 on a lens right now!!
heres the one I am getting from Amazon- plus its free shipping
link
Nikon makes a 35mm AF-S lens that is 1/2 the price of the 50mm AF-S....around $220ish
It's a wonderful lens and I highly recommend it.....
This is better than Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor? I am so confused as to the differences between them!

One is a 50mm lens and the other is a 35mm lens....
I have both lenses and use them interchangeably...
It just depends on what Im shooting and where Im shooting...
For home shots of the kids the 35mm enables me to not have to move back so far from them. I can also move in a touch closer with the 35mm than I can with the 50mm....
It really just depends on what you are shooting....
But for the price the 35mm AF-S is a great lens...it just came out in March 2009 and flew off the shelves....it's gotten some great reviews.

can both the 50mm and the 35mm work with the d40? Which would be a better buy? I'm so confused which to buy. It would be for in home shooting.

I can't imagine doing this while chasing a toddler.
I have the 50 mm 1.4 and I love it!

YES...they are both AF-S lenses....
The 50mm AF 1.8 that you originally were looking into will not Auto focus on the D40. So you need the 50mm AF-S 1.4....
If cost is an issue the 35mm AF-S is over $200 cheaper than the 50mm AF-S....they are both great lenses.
You'd be very happy with either one of them....

Believe it or not...it can become 2nd nature after awhile. One of my friends in the biz had me take my lenses off of Autofocus as a way of teaching me about focusing. It becomes something you can do without thinking after awhile..
HOWEVER....
I think I'll stick with Autofocus...

Thanks Heather! As usual, you are awesome and a big help. I may try the 35 mm AF-S. :) Now if I can convince DH to get it!
