SLR Moms-- I need help with a lens

Can any photog moms help? I noticed that a bunch of pics from vacation came out with a blackish blob spot on them…in the same spot. Fine, I thought I needed to clean the external parts of the lens. Did that very thoroughly with the wipes I have. I took another batch of pics, and the spot is still there, and it looks like there may be another.

HELP!!! What do I do??

TIA! Chat Icon

You cleaned the lens and then where the lens connects to the camera??

If that is all clean you may have to send the camera out to be opened up and cleaned inside...

If you put the lens on another SLR is it still there? or another lens on your SLR? (To determine if it's in the camera or the lens).

My guess is it's in the internal part of your lens if it's black. Back in the pre-digital days, if it was black on your film, it was on the lens, if it was white it was in the camera.

You can take your lens & camera to Nikon on Route 110 for service, if need be.

Do you have a filter? Did you remove and clean the filter and the lens?

Is the spot still there if you switch lens?

I had a similar issue. My photographer friend suggested I do this before taking it in for service and it worked! I had posted this on a similar thread a few weeks ago.

Take the lens off, turn the shutter all the way to "Bulb" and press the shutter button like you were taking a picture (this will keep it in an open position until you release the shutter button). I shyed away from using a can of compressed air Chat Icon , but I used a boogie sucker (aka a baby's nasal aspirator) and puffed a few puffs of air into it. Viola! It worked and no more eyelash on every pic!

Re: SLR Moms-- I need help with a lens

Thanks for the fast replies ladies!!

It appears to be only 1 of my lenses. I don't have another SLR body to try it on, but I think it's just my 18-55 lens b/c I haven't noticed it on my 55-200 lens. I may take pics of a white wall with both lenses to make sure.

I do have a filter on the lens and took that off and cleaned both sides as well as the external part of the lens.

sounds like you have something on your sensor:
SLR Camera Sensor.

There are a few ways to clean it. I personally would opt to take it to a camera store to have it cleaned. Some places will even do it for free because its fast.

It looks exactly like the one on the right in the boat pic (the first pic in the article). Thanks Amanda-- I'll try to take it somewhere.

I had this problem, but I had lots of blobs on blue skies and skin. For me, it wasn't the lens but the sensor had dust on it. A photographer friend recommended the Rocket Blaster. Its like a huge nasal aspirator that blows off the dust. They sell them at pro camera shops or via Amazon. Apparently you need to do this periodically even if you have the automatic sensor function to clean off the dust. Your camera manual can tell you how to move the mirror up to get at the sensor filter. It's easy to do and since you don't actually touch anything not as scary as I thought to do it yourself. Taking it for service can get expensive. If the blast of air doesn't do the trick, then you do need to get it professionally cleaned. I wouldn't mess with it beyond the air. DO NOT use compressed air, this can damage the sensor.

good luck!

It's the digital equivalent of the 35mm cameras versus the litlte point & shoots. An advantage a DSLR has over a non-DSLR, is the shutter lag is almost non-existent (meaning the time between the point at which you hit the shutter & the photo is taken).

Are the pics any different? It depends on who is taking the photo. I've handed my DSLR off to many people who did not know how to take a good photo. Also, it's not really about the camera as much as it is about the lens.
