Please help - Low progesterone ??
A friend of mine just recently got a BFP, but it is very early in the pregnancy. The doctors mentioned to her that her progesterone is low. Please let me know what this means and if you have any experiences with this. TIA

She may need to take progesterone suppositories. I have no experience with this but I do not think it is that uncommon

Re: Please help - Low progesterone ??
It's not uncommon, but she should be on progesterone suppositories. Progesterone is VERY important in early pregnancy as it helps to sustain the pregnancy until the placenta starts to take over.

She is a little over 4 weeks. Should she ask the doc to call in a RX today? Or can it wait until tomorrow (her next appt)?

Re: Please help - Low progesterone ??
I had very low progesterone and I was on twice a day suppositories until I was 10 weeks along. It is messy and annoying but it is worth it. My little man is just fine.

Re: Please help - Low progesterone ??
it depends on her numbers whether or not she needs the suppositories - which i'm assuming her doctors looked at to determine that they were low, but decided they weren't low enough for suppositories. some doctors treat at higher numbers but it's usually because the person has had fertility problems in the past, etc.
doctors usually treat for numbers 10 and under, but in reality you're fine until you reach 5 and under. the thing is progesterone is produced in waves so they treat at 10 assuming that's the high point of the wave and 5 (which is dangerous) is your low point. you're usually on them for a few weeks (8? 10? i can't remember exactly) until the placenta takes over progesterone production (before then the ovary produces it). my progesterone was 14 then 11.4 then went back up (i can't remember the number). i was never on suppositories and am now almost 16 weeks with a healthy baby.
if your friend is worried, tell her to ask her dr, but just because the numbers are on the lower end doesn't mean the worst.
