Re: please recommend your GI specialist

I have taken my DD to so many different GI drs. and a lot of them were terrible.

We were seeing one of them out of Winthrop- and he actually told me my DD was fine and didn't have reflux-yeah right.

Well, with mothers instinct I knew she needed some kind of treatment and didn't give up. We finally found an excellent GI out of Schneiders Child. Hosp. Dr. Levine!! There are also other GIs there that I have also heard are excellent. I have researched and on LI Schneiders GIs were rated top.

My DD, unfortunately, is the extreme case and had to have an upper endoscopy and be put on prevacid. We are still battling her reflux and she has to have another endosc. in a few weeks.

If it weren't for this dr, my DD still would be suffering and be left untreated. (she is almost 2) Which can cause severe damage to her espophogus.

Good Luck! Sorry so long!

Re: please recommend your GI specialist

The Center for Pediatric Specialty Care (affiliated with Good Sam) has several...we see Dr. Gold and couldn't be happier...he is everything most specialists aren't...he returns my calls quickly, does phone consultations with me so I don't have to come every week, and spends a lot of time with us when we come in. I know other people who have used Dr. Kessler and like him as well.
(Edited to add: DD has silent reflux and a severe milk/soy allergy)

Same exact thing with my son!! We just met with dr gold on monday and he was diagnosed with a milk allergy, and he is allergic to soy....he is being treated for reflux, but we are hoping to take him off the meds...we are going to try this week.

I called two days later with a question that i thought the receptionisys or nurses would answer, but they put dr gold right on the phone...I was VERY impressed.

Go with your gut. I had a gut feeling that Chase had a mik allergy and he does...but even if not, you want to get her checked out so you can rule it out...I was going to suggest this on your other post. Chat Icon

he is in babylon on old deer park avenue.

he said that 75% of babies with milk allergies respond to nutramigen/alimentum and those who don't are put on elecare/neocate.

Def. call a gastro. Her symptoms sound alot like my sons. How many ounces is she taking at a feeding? How is she sleeping?

She only wants about 4 oz at a time, but the bottle before bed its about 5.5. Shes not really eating all that great. She sleeps okay now that shes in her carseat. Dr. recommended she sleep there.
Her naps range from 20 min to 4 hours. Chat Icon But she only wakes once during the nightime. This is why Im confused...if they have bad reflux cant they not sleep well?

Re: please recommend your GI specialist

Signs for me that something was wrong, was that Chase would sleep at most 3 hours at night...he would also only eat between 2-3 oz at a feeding, and the only way that I could make him comfortable was to hold him facing outward with my hand on his belly....I spent my whole day standing up, swaying back and forth doing this...I just knew something was up, because on the rare occasion that he wasn't uncomfortable, he was sooo happy and smiley, and it killed me to know that that was how he was supposed to act and feel, and he couldn't for some reason. When I found out there was a reason, I was so happy because we could fix it. I have noticed a drastic improvement since he's been on the new formula.

Re: please recommend your GI specialist

Sleeping all depends, my DD hates being on her back, i bought an amby bed so she can sleep easy on her side..she had projectile last night again..it comes and goes...
If she is fussy with the bottle, that is where i am pretty sure you are dealing with reflux-hurts them..my DD would scream, she was hungry but it hurt her.. she screamed constantly and the only place she still naps is the swing..they dont always have sleep issues..some get bothered more at different times..plus, with you doing the car seat, that is keeping her elevated...

Re: please recommend your GI specialist

Big fan of Dr. Gold and Dr. Kessler although from this post they seem to have moved their office.

Jack had severe colic, milk allergy and silent reflux. They were great with him.

Its a shame your ped isn't more on top of this - honestly, I would switch peds and find someone more proactive. I see you live near me....if you want some reco's you can FM me. I switched peds a few times and finally found one that I don't know what I would have done without them when Jack was colicky. They were so helpful and really helped save my sanity.

We had DD on almentium and she was still projectile vomiting and had visible blood in her stool...Neocate and Axid have changed her into a completely different child! Have they been testing her for blood in her stool? The ped. can even do that, though Dr Gold told me that they usually won't wait the full 3 minutes to see if it shows up (small amounts take a longer time, I guess)...One good thing about Dr. Gold's office...it doesn't take long to get an appointment...I was able to get an appointment 2-3 days after I called them! They totally understand that these kinds of things just can't wait that long!

Re: please recommend your GI specialist

I would insist that they test her stool (so bring a poopy diaper with you!) and if blood is visible, that can mean a milk protein allergy...and I would ask for a referral (if you need one) to a GI specialist! Good luck today!

Re: please recommend your GI specialist

Also, if she is put on Neocate, I know a pharmacy that had a few cans of it in stock so you can get it immediately...its pretty hard to find!

Re: please recommend your GI specialist

We are in Smithtown too, and DD had a milk protein allergy when she an infant. She outgrew it.

Our ped had sent us for a second opinion to verify everything. He sent us to Dr. Markowitz from Schneider's who I highly recommend. He does some hours at the Commack satelite office, which is where we saw him.

The commack location is:

353 Veterans Highway
Commack, NY 11725

We didn't need a referral even though our ped sent us there. Depends on the type of insurance that you have. Contact your carrier directly for that info.

Sorry took awhile to respond. Dr. Levine is in Schneiders Children Hospital in New Hyde Park. I really do recommend him. The other GIs are from the group are also excellent from what I hear. I think some of them go to other satellite offices in other locations as well. Your best bet is to call Schneiders directly and ask them.
