My brother suggests a wine from the Brunello region. He said to ask the store owner, any wine from that region will run you $70 and up and they should be able to recommend a good one. For a California wine, he suggests Bella Glos Pinot Noir (I'm not a red drinker but I have had this at his house and I enjoyed it) from either Taylor Lane or Clark & Telephone (same vineyard) which is also upward of $75. HTH.
