Another reason the country is going down the tubes...
Why? because we don't forced people to chant words they might not believe in?
Freedom is what made us a great nation, acting like sheep will bring us down

Re: Pledge of Allegiance
As a teacher, I stop and stand every day for the pledge bc it's what we do. I don't think it's hurting anyone but it's not helping either. Honestly, high school students are doing anything BUT listening to or reflecting about the words they are hearing. I think there are much more meaningful ways to instill a pride in your country, which I do think is very important. Having age appropriate and frequent discussions about what it means to be a citizen of this country is more powerful IMO. As for the pledge, I could take it or leave it.

Not necessarily, I wouldn't say I agree with it all but I think we all need to stand together as citizens of the nation. Everyone is so self absorbed and disconnected these days, it's like all anyone believes in money and instant gratification. Why not give the kids a sense of pride and have them say it. Ask them to omit the "under God" part if it's not in line with their beliefs but, but don't ban the Pledge of Allegiance...

What us teachers are saying is the Pledge does not give the students a feeling of pride- they just recite the words like robots without any thought to what they mean. There HAS to be a better way to get our kids to be patriotic!!!

Re: Pledge of Allegiance
I think it should be said. Maybe not every single day, but at least once a week. If someone wants to leave out the god part, I am okay with that. But I am not okay with it not being said in our schools. It is out of respect. If you do not respect the country, then don't go to the schools here and don't live here. I personally would find it offensive if someone was not at least standing during it.
I understand if, for example, there is an exchange student that wishes not to say it. but they should still stand at least. if I was a guest in another country I would do the same.

As the final project for our unit, I give the students a choice to make a new flag, song or poem about the country. You'd be surprised what 7-8 yr olds can come up with that shows their pride in the USA! Maybe there should be a contest to write a new version??? BTW- did you know the man who wrote the Pledge was a Socialist?!? Things that make you go hmmmm

It is creepy to me as well. I don't think it is neccesary to recite every day a pledge to a country just because you live there. I consider myself lucky to have many freedoms...but I don't consider myself lucky to live in the US,...if I were born somewhere else and researching places to live and were afforded the opportunity and had the financial means..I would not live here. This doesn't mean I don't. Respect our government...our leaders...our army's. I do. I simply do not need to show this support because I'm forced to.
I agree with this word for word. If I didn't have the familial ties keeping me here there's no way I'd live in this country. I also agree with other posters who have said its kind of creepy...children don't even understand what they are pledging their allegiance to, yet we continue to (IMO) turn them into unquestioning drones.

Re: Pledge of Allegiance
Maybe kids would feel more patriotic about saying it,if there was a lesson on the meaning of the pledge. I never recall a lesson and I just asked my 5th grader and.... NOPE no lesson as of yet. How can they feel patriotic about something that was never explained to them. KWIM?

I personally think the pledge is creepy.
The "under God" part is a whole separate issue; it doesn't belong there because we are supposed to enjoy a government based on separation of church and state. I don't get wound up about it, but still.
But in general, it's just weird to me that we force children to stand and recite this thing in unison and pledge loyalty to something they're not even old enough to understand. It's like something right out of 1984.
But I'm a a teacher, so I make them stand. I stand up out of respect and say nothing.

Every. Single. Morning. Every. Single. Word.
Even from an Agnostic (or close to it) yes, every single word.
We used to have to say the pledge Sing the National Anthem AND sing Our Country Tis of Thee
Furthermore, we were required to stand up and hold our hands over our hearts and face the flag not only at school but at the local movies as well. Every movie, Every time.
Couldn't be said any better than this!~

This is America, it is tradition and it is outrageous to me to even question it. GOOD LORD! oops I said Lord
To me, the fact that this is America is exactly why we SHOULD be questioning it. In my mind, America is not about blindly following tradition or doing exactly what was done in the past just because it was done in the past. If that were the case, we'd still have slaves and women wouldn't be voting (among other things).

I think you can believe in this country but not believe that its citizens should be required to recite the pledge.
I agree there is some irony in refusing to pledge allegiance to a country that gives you the right to refuse to say that pledge, but it is exactly what the first amendment was all about.
You can also love what this country stood for but not its policies, actions, etc.

Re: Pledge of Allegiance
It should be said out loud and every single day - every single word.
I am already teaching it to my ONE YEAR OLD.
My parents were not born in this country and I knew it before setting foot in a school. Heck, my mother isn't even a citizen and she was the one who taught it to me!
Think kids don't know what it means? Show them. Teach it to them. Teach them all about it. Tell them what it means to a person who left their home country and became a citizen! Tell them what it means to someone fighting for our country! Talk about it!

I think it should be recited minus the under God clause because of the separation of church and state.
