Re: Pledge of Allegiance
I said the Pledge every single morning in school from kindergarten till senior year. We got our "lesson" about it in 2nd grade, when we learned to spell "allegiance".
Every morning I would recite
I pledge allegiance to the flag (Hey did they move the flag again?)
Of the United States of America And to the republic for which it stands (DID I FORGET MY MATH HOMEWORK?!)
one nation, under God, indivisible (don't say invisible Mrs. Geiger does not think that's funny)
with liberty and justice for all (OMG I think Hunter Kimball just smiled at me!! )
Mindless reciting did not make me patriotic. Watching the news, discussing current affairs, learning history, traveling around the country and community service made me realize how amazing this country is.

Another reason the country is going down the tubes...
Why? because we don't forced people to chant words they might not believe in?
Freedom is what made us a great nation, acting like sheep will bring us down
If you don't believe in this country why be here?
Ahh the good ole "Love it or Leave it" argument.
Ahh the ole dismissive avoidance response with a glib cliche instead of answering the question and defending your own POV.

I think it's honest. You hear people say that "glib" comment all the time. You can love this country and not "like" it. Nothing wrong with honesty.
As per the original question: Not a fan of the Pledge and really don't like the added God part.

I think I said what I needed to say earlier, and others have summed it up nicely in subsequent posts. No need for repetition.

The almost even split in the comments with the huge discrepancy in the poll is interesting. Why aren't more pro-pledge people speaking up?

Pro-pledger over here; I just didn't feel the need to comment. My poll vote speaks for me. I don't feel the need to elaborate on my opinion.

Re: Pledge of Allegiance
I never would have thought of the word creepy, but now that it was said, it is a good description. It always felt very 1984 to me. As a teacher, I stand, but don't say anything. I have been asked by ha students, which is a great opening for a discussion. I spent a summer institute in China and the cameras are pointed at the teachers, not the students. I am thankful that these discussions can be had here...but I don't need to say 30 or so words to be grateful. there are better ways to teach civics than mindlessly reciting the pledge.
As for not saying "under God," it's difficult to explain this to kids. We are atheists and would prefer our kids to omit it, but they don't understand most of the words anyway. There's also a social aspect in the younger years. I won't lie, when ds came home and told us "under golf" I did not correct him. In our family, it's a more appropriate phrase.

I think it's dumb. It has no meaning. The kids just regurgitate it. Dumb, dumb, dumb. If my child questions it and chooses not to say it i will fight for her right not to. Just because I live here doesn't mean I have to like it and I certainly don't have to pledge allegiance when I don't believe in most of the nonsense that goes on in this country.

Re: Pledge of Allegiance
I refused to say it once in HS. I had no reasons - just that I was a brat and wanted to be in control of myself. I got sent to the pricipal's office and got detention. Big deal. I practically lived in detention senior year.
But regardelss of my reasons, I should NOT have to say something if I dont want to. My kids should not have to either. I have no problems with them doing it every morning, but if a kid doesnt want to say it, dont make them or punish them. Thats not right.

My DH and I speak about this fact all the time. The minority is usually more vocal than the majority, and that is why people are always surprised at election results. Just because someone doesn't feel the need to voice their opposition to you doesn't mean that they agree with you.

I feel it should be said every morning. Every word! When I was in Elementary we said it every single morning. I feel that most of the kids today don't even know the words anymore.
"Under God"- It's about teaching our kids to be patriotic not religious. Someone will ALWAYS have a problem with something. What's next removing the "In God we trust" from the back of the dollar bills?... Some things should just be left alone.

God is not about religion but about the United States of America? I think we went to different religion classes.
As for leaving well enough alone that could be said about every change this country has gone through including when the God part was added during the McCarthy era.

It should be said out loud and every single day - every single word.
I am already teaching it to my ONE YEAR OLD.
My parents were not born in this country and I knew it before setting foot in a school. Heck, my mother isn't even a citizen and she was the one who taught it to me!
Think kids don't know what it means? Show them. Teach it to them. Teach them all about it. Tell them what it means to a person who left their home country and became a citizen! Tell them what it means to someone fighting for our country! Talk about it!
If the 'under God' part offends someone then they could always omit that part. I obviously haven't set foot in an elementary school in a loooong time but I remember learning about the Pledge, the history of the US and I most certainly remember Flag Day being a big thing at school. We would all wear red, white and blue and usually had some kind of recital where we would sing the National Anthem and so on. I may have 'only' been in elementary school but I clearly understood the lessons we were learning about the history of our country and the pride we should all have as Americans. I wonder if Flag Day is even celebrated in schools anymore.

I see "Under God" as believing that a higher being is protecting our nation- not telling the person saying it you have to go out and believe in God. If someone feels uncomfortable saying it, by all means don't say it. The OP asked what our opinions were and mine is to keep is as is and say it every day.

It's easy for someone who agrees with the statement at hand to say 'Some things should just be left alone."
If you disagreed with the statement, then you would think its a big deal and would be up in arms to change it.
But the reality is that the religious side of the country/world is much larger and outspoken than the athiest/agnostic side (or some religious folks are afraid to admit they are athiest/agnostic. )

This is America, it is tradition and it is outrageous to me to even question it. GOOD LORD! oops I said Lord
I agree.this is getting so ridiculous. Why all of a sudden are people questioning under god,or in god we trust on money. This never happened years ago when we were in school. Get over it and find something else to complain about.

Re: Pledge of Allegiance
If it's just the "Under G@d" that turns everyone off, go back to the 1923 version. (Where they added The United Stated of America)
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Re: Pledge of Allegiance
Good lord!! Now I've heard it all! Is there ANYTHING left in this country that isn't an issue with someone?? There is always someone, somewhere who has a problem with something. This country is just out of hand with everyone trying to cater to EVERY single person's belief systems and worrying about EVERY single person's feelings.
I look at the Pledge as just a tradition, what in heck is there to be offended by? The word "God"? Really, offended by a WORD??!! Sorry but it takes a lot more to offend me. I am NOT religious at all, I don't go to church, I don't pray BUT I also don't have ANY problem with reciting the Pledge as is. Interpret "God" to fit whatever your belief system is. If you can't bear to say the word, then don't say that part. Rewriting the Pledge is LUDICROUS to me and eliminating it is equally as RIDICULOUS.

i will be honest when stating it at school my eyes would roll back in my head and i would just say nothing. I feel it should still be done but I do agree the word "god" should be eliminated and put in the USA.

No, it should be voluntary because that is what a free country is! Nobody should be FORCED to pledge allegiance to ANYTHING in a free country.
And yes, take out "Under God." It does not belong.

So then you have an issue with Eisenhower "rewriting" the pledge when he added "Under God."
