The almost even split in the comments with the huge discrepancy in the poll is interesting. Why aren't more pro-pledge people speaking up?
Pro-pledger over here; I just didn't feel the need to comment. My poll vote speaks for me. I don't feel the need to elaborate on my opinion.
I can't speak for everybody, but for myself, I don't feel like being bashed. Probably other posters feel the same way. It's always the minority who is the most vocal. I just got bashed by multiple posters bcause I said I can't understand why Suri Cruise is allowed to wear heels!!!!!!!!!!I'm certainly not going to comment on this!! This is why I love polls.
If anyone's getting bashed on this thread, it seems to me it's the anti-pledgers...

Re: Pledge of Allegiance
Nope I don't recite it because I won't say GOD...there is a HUGE seperation of Church and State in my House. Helll I pay for things in Gold because money says in God We Trust
I believe it should be said every day, and that the point behind it is not a religious concept so, IMHO, it is not creating unity of church and state. I think AMerica is a wonderful place and I agree we are the land of the free, but we are taking advantage of it. Our founding father's came here for religious freedom not to say let's start a country where we can do what we want since we will be built on religious freedom. Over time we have really taken advantage of this. This is also a GENERAL comment and NOT directed at anybody or any religion.
It's almost like we can do, say, act however we want and the good old fall back is well this is America. Yes, Yes it is and I would like to live in a RESPECTABLE America Thank you very much!

I think its totally creepy and is a subtle way of brainwashing.
Also America is NOT one nation under God.
What about atheists? are they not included.
If you think its so RIDICULOUS that people are offended by the use of the word God, how would you feel if it were changed to "One Naiton under Allah".

See I guess its all in how you look at it. I never thought of it as a Christian God, but more as a higher power sort of God that circles all religions and aspects of life. Honestly I don't see the harm in not saying Under God if you are athiest, but the pledge SHOULD be said....It should! I find it shocking that we are so quick to all say the land of the free and in America we whatever, but how many REALLY know what others know about our country? I find it very shocking when I speak to people that have become citizens and realize they know WAY more about "my" contry then I do and the pride most of them feel just ozes out of them. I wish all of us "entitled because we were born here" people knew that much. Again, sweeping generalization not directed to LIF, but people in general. I know in MI there is a serious lack of knowledge.

Allah is the name for God in the Arabic language. It's the same God. It's a different name, but it's not a different God.
I feel like your question is similar to asking "How would you feel if we all had to recite the pledge in a different language?" It's not a change in meaning. I think your question would mean that the whole pledge would be translated into a different language and the English version wouldn't exist. Seeing as our constitution, laws, etc. are written in English, I'd say your scenario is not likely to occur.
In the event that the government decided to translate one word of the pledge and not the rest of it, I would continue to say "God" because that is what I call Him, just as those who call Him "Allah" are free to insert "Allah" when they are speaking if they wish and atheists are free to omit "God" if they wish as well.

Re: Pledge of Allegiance
we say it together EVERY single school day in my school and i'm glad we do for those who said it is dumb etc. i don't think it takes much to understand what it's about...
there are men and women who have DIED for our right to say it among all of the other freedoms we enjoy in this country. what could be bad about that??????

Exactly. God really had nothing to do with this nation whatsoever. We are founded on separation of church and state. We are one nation but not under God. And as for tradition like other's pointed out this was an addition to the pledge so it's not really tradition if you're not reciting the original verse.

If its brainwashing then I am happily brainwashed because I love my country, the freedoms it gives and respect the men and women who fight for those freedoms.
And...I'm an atheist! I don't believe in any type of god. I usually either don't say the words under god or say it anyway. Words are just that--words. They only have meaning if you give them meaning. And although I don't believe in a god, I would never take away anyone's right to say the words.
So yes, I say the pledge proudly!

I wasn't going to reply anymore to this thread BUT.............I am sorry, I just have to say it, this is the stupidest statement I've ever heard!
Creepy? What is "creepy" about saying the pledge?? Very strange choice of words. A ghost is creepy. A haunted house is creepy. Reciting a few words to show your pride in the country you live in is not "creepy".
And brainwashing? Really? How exactly is one being brainwashed by reciting the pledge? Brainwashing to what end? Brainwashing to accomplish what?? Oh wait.............**GASP**..........you mean that after reciting the pledge kids might be brainwashed into feeling a little patriotic??!! Oh the HORROR!!!! Oh the CREEPINESS of it all!!! We must put a stop to this immediately!!!! How dare kids show pride and patriotism to their country!!!

I wasn't going to reply either, but we are just three hours away from the day that changed our country forever. The fact that people think it's okay to argue over this now is sickening.
I would like to think we could put our differences aside and pause to remember that we are all lucky to still be here in this amazing country.

Patriotism is what got us to "America" in the first place. You should thank your lucky stars you live in a country like this. You should be thankful to the men and women who fought for your freedom to live in this country. Whether you believe in "God" or not, you should belive in your country. Calling the Pledge creepy is disgraceful and naive.

OMG people, read your history books! You have no clue what you are talking about. Don't make such a statment without knowing your history. GOD and the CHURCH are actually one of the foundations of this country. I am not religous but I am a lover of history and you are point blank wrong.

I'm undecided as to if it should be said in school. I don't know that I find it necessary to pledge your allegiance to a country on a daily basis.
As for the "under God" part, I think it should be taken out & brought back to its original form. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance#Addition_of_.22under_God.22
This is a nation that is supposed to have a separation of church & state. And before it's brought up, I don't think "In God We Trust" should be printed on our money either. I don't agree with Congress's decision that those phrases have lost religious meaning. I agree with this. Honestly my biggest concern is not the "Under God" part, although it doesn't thrill me. Basically, you are forcing minors to Pledge their allegiance to this country. They don't understand what they are saying, and unless things have changed since I was in school, they don't explain what you are actually pledging. I think it should be discussed to educate the students, and be optional, not mandatory.

ITA. I think there's nothing wrong with trying to instill a sense of national pride in our kids. Knowing that they should stand, take off their hat, place their hand over their heart and say the pledge at a baseball game or wherever. School is where they learn it. If it's not repeated often, it will be forgotten. And leave the UNDER GOD...that's how it was written. JMO Because it is America, we are FREE to question it; tradition or not. There are other ways of instilling a sense of National Pride other than forcing it without explaining its meaning, and I am perfectly capable of teaching my children to put their hand over their heart, remove their caps, and respect the Pledge and our Anthem Finally, the Pledge did not originally have "Under God" in it, and was added by a RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION.

Hearing things you disagree with and being forced to say them at an age when you have NO concept of them is another story IMO. This is exactly my sentiment as well.

I'd like to see it re-written.
I teach 2nd graders the meaning and history behind it for one of our SS units and it was then that I realized just how hard it is to understand with all those big vocabulary words.
I also had 2 Jehovah's Witnesses in my class last year and I taught all my students that noone can force you to say the Pledge- not the school, government - NOONE! Some days I say it, some days I don't.
I love my country- even with all its faults- but don't feel the need to say it out loud every day. Bravo! I love that you teach that they have options, and the meaning. :)

I was doing some googling about this, and found a skit from a comedy group who redid the pledge.
I pledge allegiance To the flag Of the United States of America Thank you very, very much for letting us little kids live here. It really, really was nice of you. You didn’t have to do it. And it’s really not freaky that us little, little kids Mindlessly recite this anthem Every day And pledge their life to a government Before they’re old enough to really think about what they’re saying. This is not a form of brainwashing. This is not a form of brainwashing. This is not a form of brainwashing. This is really the greatest country in the whole world. All the other countries suck. And if this country ever goes to war, As it’s often wont to do, I promise to help go and kill all the other countries’ kids. God bless Johnson & Johnson. God bless GE. God bless Citigroup. Amen.

Not believing in the "under god" or the necessity of reciting the pledge doesn't mean we're not thankful to live in the US, nor is anyone knocking soldiers or the men & women who fought for my freedome to live in this country.
In fact, one of the freedoms they fought for includes:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
As for Patriotism is what got us to "America", if you're a true history buff, you also know that patriotism was a huge struggle for the founding fathers & they were considered unpatriotic.
Criticism of the US isn't unpatriotic. If anything it's about as American as you can get - recognizing flaws & still being true & hopeful for your country.

I will admit I am not a history buff but what does God have to do with this country? What does church have to do with the fundamentals? Separation of church and state...no? God=Church to me and IMO I do not want me government to be influenced by God and/or the church and having God on our money and in our pledge just isn't right to me. So while I may not be 100% accurate because I am not a history I am pretty certain that I am correct in the fact that GOD was not in the original pledge and that we are based on separation of church and state but do correct me if I am wrong.
