I think we're ready.
I don't think we're necessarily ready for Hillary to be that woman, however.
I agree.
And, honestly, if i look back and the first woman president is Hillary, it will just take away from the novelty and significance of it for me. Putting my personal feelings for her aside, she wouldn't have the shot at this that she has if it weren't for her Husband and IMO, that doesn't really speak volumes for Women's progress.
editted for typo and grammar
I agree as well.
Does anyone think Hillary has gotten as far as she has regardless of who her husband is?
I think she would have come pretty far without her husband judging from her personality but nepotism definitely plays a role...just like it does in many political families (bush for example).
While I do not love Hilary...I think her personality comes across as fake/insincere at times....I still think if she won it would be a huge advancement for women and it doesn't take away any credibility or significance just b/c her husband was president.
I am ready for a female president but not sure about it being her...

I don't, and I don't think this country is ready for a black president either.
We live in NY. It is so different from the rest of the country. As much as I hate to say it, I don't think this country is ready for either.
I agree 100%.
Look at the fact that Bush was elected twice - the second time after a terrible first term.
The middle of the country is so conservative and I think they will go out in droves to vote to make sure that neither Hillary nor Obama are elected.

Re: POLL - Do you think the country is ready for the FIRST female president?
Unfortunately, no.
You have to remember, this is the very same country that, only a mere 4 years ago, re-elected George Bush.
It's hard to get a very real perspective on what the majority of this country thinks because, living in NY, or for myself, in the suburbs close to Philly, we are ensconsed with, and surrounded by like-liberal-minded people. Even those who live in these areas that are conservative, it's a different kind of conservatism that you would find, say, in the bible belt.
So, basing the outcome on the majority vote, that does not come from these more liberal areas, no, I don't think that the same majority that elected Bush twice in a row is ready for a female president.

Re: POLL - Do you think the country is ready for the FIRST female president?
[ETA -- My post isn't in reaction to anyone in particular -- I just don't want people mistaking the use of the word conservative how it's been used above with "Republican" - b/c I think that would unfairly categories Republicans. I also realize that the word "conservative" as used likely didn't refer to Republicans, but I feel the need to say the following anyway. ]
Please don't mistake political conservatism for racism or bigotry. There are racists, bigots, and male chauvinist of every creed, color, and political party. Republican does NOT equal racist, bigot, or male chauvinist. I think the majority of peopleare more than capable of voting on the issues, not on gender or color lines.
I agree that there are are closed-minded people all over the country (perhaps more in certain areas for sure) who may not be ready for a female President. I think sadly it's reality in a lot of places... but let's not make it sound like it's a GOP ideal. It's NOT.

Other.
I know that I am ready.
I think that certain parts of the country are ready and others not so much.
ditto. i think the not so open minded states arent ready for a black or female president. i, for one, am ready and open to the possibility.
if other countries can be run by women, why cant the US?

Re: POLL - Do you think the country is ready for the FIRST female president?
Obama is not Muslim. Not sure I would care though.
Further, some of the middle America democratic states voted his way in the primary.
I think there is a real shot for a woman or a black person...

Obama
I think it's ridiculous to look at someone's religion (or lack thereof, even) as a reason to vote for them or not. Yes, Muslim extremists are bad. But I'd venture to say most Muslims are good, kind people. Besides the fact that Senator Obama is actually a Christian.
I will say, though, that there are probably a lot of people in the country who might not be able to look past a candidate's Muslim religion, sad to say.
And SUPPOSEDLY Senator Obama has saluted the flag many, many times.

Who the hell would base their vote on the candidate's religion (which, btw, ISN'T Islam) instead of the real issues?

I would reverse it, would Bill have gotten as far as he did without Hillary behind him. I have read the theory that theirs is a political marriage and their deal was that both would help the other become president.
and I'm pretty sure I know the answer to: Would GWB have gotten as far if Bush 41 wasn't his father.

Well put and I agree, so I hope you understand that when I referred to conservatism I am not necessarily equating that to the republican party, but to a more general outlook.

I think her point was more that if he was so devout as a Muslim and it is true that he would not salute the American Flag, how can he run America if he strongly opposes saluting the flag? THat is how I take this statement.
Now I don't know if this is true that he would not salute the flag, so I would like to know the truth on this story.

Anthem - while he was photographed as not putting his hand over his heart (who salutes the flag?), he has been seen doing it on other occassions...so no one knows what the story is.
Muslim - um, not.
