I don't think the US is ready for Hillary, but I'd take her over Obama any day!!! Who the hell would elect a MUSLIM to run this country (who supposebly wouldnt salute our flag??? Seems shady to me....
Who the hell would vote for someone based on his or her religion? I honestly don't understand this comment.
I think her point was more that if he was so devout as a Muslim and it is true that he would not salute the American Flag, how can he run America if he strongly opposes saluting the flag? THat is how I take this statement.
Now I don't know if this is true that he would not salute the flag, but I do know if he did not, then I even more so don't want him to win.
Her point, IMO, seemed more about his alleged religion than about whether or not he salutes the flag. I still don't understand how someone could base her opinion on whether or not Obama is qualified to run the country on his religion. What does religion have to do with anything?

I think we're ready.
I don't think we're necessarily ready for Hillary to be that woman, however.
I agree.
And, honestly, if i look back and the first woman president is Hillary, it will just take away from the novelty and significance of it for me. Putting my personal feelings for her aside, she wouldn't have the shot at this that she has if it weren't for her Husband and IMO, that doesn't really speak volumes for Women's progress.
editted for typo and grammar
I agree as well.
Does anyone think Hillary has gotten as far as she has regardless of who her husband is?
I've been thinking the samething and to be honest, no, I don't think she'd be where she is today if it hadn't been for Bill.
But I guess we'll never really know.

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but why are you basing your decision on Obama's religion?
Oh and BTW, it's supposedly, not supposebly.
Sorry - it's a pet peeve of mine.

Anthem - while he was photographed as not putting his hand over his heart (who salutes the flag?), he has been seen doing it on other occassions...so no one knows what the story is.
Muslim - um, not.
Ok, now that I look at the video...I am trying to think what I actually was raised to do.
ETA - Turns out I do put my hand over my heart, based on how I was taught in school.

I know I put my hand over my heart when we say the Pledge of Allegiance, but I am not sure now what I do during the Star Spangled Banner?
When I go to a hockey game andl they sing the Star Spangled Banner, the men take off their hats, women put their hands over their hearts and everyone faces the flag. But I have also seen people who fold their hands in front of them and face the flag. So it wouldn't surprise me if someone DIDN'T put their hand over their heart.

I never really thought about it. It is just second nature when I do it.
The video on Snopes does show that he is the only one without his hand over his heart during the whole song. But does that mean he actually "refused" to do it, or just wasn't raised to do it. So how were we raised?
I think I feel a spinoff coming....

Re: POLL - Do you think the country is ready for the FIRST female president?
I would like to think so, but there are still so people who are adamant about not woman having as president.
I have to say, watching the coverage last night, the media is really good at subliminally *telling* us who we should vote for. They are making a big deal out of the "black" vote, the "female" vote and the "Hispanic" vote. This is a new way of reporting the exit poll results, and I feel like it is a subtle (or not so subtle) way of the networks telling us who we should vote for based on our own demographic.

Re: POLL - Do you think the country is ready for the FIRST female president?
I am, but I don't think the entire country is
Frankly, looking back throughout our history, we tend to lag decades behind other countries (such as britian) in areas of social equality. and every time, the bigotry has to be hammered out of a segment of the population.
examples: end of slavery-years later than europe, and had to fight with the south before they had no choice but concede
woman's suffrage-decades later than in europe
Civil Rights Mov't-a horrible embarrasment, and required military enforcement
subduing the KKK- FBI had to bend laws and inflitrate the klan to stop the hangings (which were oddly ignored/condoned by the locals)
women and african americans still are paid roughly 75 cents to the white man's $1....
Civil Rights for Gays.... we'll continue to bash them and make their lives difficult, likely for another couple decades
Those last 4 items are really recent, with the last couple items being current data! As a country, we're soooo not ready for genuine equality and a prez who's not a white (likely evangelical) protestant male.

I agree. However, I think the world is more ready for a women then an african american male. Flame if you want, but JMHO. Keep in mind this is not a personal reflection

I would reverse it, would Bill have gotten as far as he did without Hillary behind him. I have read the theory that theirs is a political marriage and their deal was that both would help the other become president.
and I'm pretty sure I know the answer to: Would GWB have gotten as far if Bush 41 wasn't his father.
I completey agree and I bet Hillary would do just fine on her own
she is a hell of alot smarter then our current president - and I doubt he would have done much with his life if his Dad wasn't president....

Unfortunately, no.
You have to remember, this is the very same country that, only a mere 4 years ago, re-elected George Bush.
It's hard to get a very real perspective on what the majority of this country thinks because, living in NY, or for myself, in the suburbs close to Philly, we are ensconsed with, and surrounded by like-liberal-minded people. Even those who live in these areas that are conservative, it's a different kind of conservatism that you would find, say, in the bible belt.
So, basing the outcome on the majority vote, that does not come from these more liberal areas, no, I don't think that the same majority that elected Bush twice in a row is ready for a female president.
ITA. This country still has a lot of growing up to do.

Re: POLL - Do you think the country is ready for the FIRST female president?
Is the country "ready" for a woman or african american president? I think that should read - is the country too racist/sexist/narrow minded to consider a candidate for their views instead of his/her gender or the color of his/her skin? Or their religion (thanks for the chuckle, Tatjana). Unfortunately, I think the answer is yes.

I think this country is ready for anyone other than Dubya.
I was going to say the exact same thing.
Honestly, I want to say that we are, but that's speaking as a New Yorker. This is the same country that re-elected Bush, so I have to wonder if the people in the parts of the country that Bush carried would be.

I agree with this statement
Let's be fair -- The vast majority of Republicans wouldn't vote for Hillary or Obama if they were white males. They disagree with them tremendously on policy issues. Those Republicans aren't preventing anyone from voting for these candidates either. (Look at the millions of votes for them cast in middle America already in the primaries.) I'd vote for a female, an African American, or anyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, etc. -- but not if I don't agree with their policies. To intimate (and I don't mean the post I quoted - speaking generally) that the Republicans will be voting for the Republican candidates *just* b/c the Democrat's candidate is female or black is unfair. I personally wouldn't vote for either of them, regardless of race or gender, b/c I don't agree with them on so many very important issues.
I don't doubt that many in middle America may not be ready for a female or African American president, but I'd bet those people come from a wide range of political backgrounds. Even if most are conservative (which I'll admit, I believe is the case), I highly doubt those people would be voting for either Hillary or Obama, even if they were white males - on purely their stance on major issues.

I agree with you, Kara.
I think America is ready for change - whether that change come in the package of a white male, a white woman or a black man. Frankly I'm tired of hearing the huge sterotypes about the 'middle of America' - yes, statistically, they tend to vote more conservatively. But people have been out in droves to vote in the primaries this year! People are being active - I think that in itself says a lot about what America is ready for!
Maybe it's easier for me not living in the US at the moment, but really I feel inspired just by people voting. For the first time in a long time there seems to be some optimism and hope for the furture coming out of the States and it's so good to see!
