I think we're ready. I wish we would have been ready when Elizabeth Dole ran. I wanted to vote for her but she dropped out before NY's primary.

Re: POLL - Do you think the country is ready for the FIRST female president?

I want to say yes. I look at the number of people who have shown up to the polls, and I have to say at least the democratic voters are ready for a female or african-american president. John Edwards is a white mail and Clinton and Obama forced him to concede from the election. So obviously the people voting in the demoocratic primaries are ready.

I think when it comes down to the actual election in November it will be about which group comes out to vote the most. The conservatives or the people who want change. I don't think it will have to do with a the race or gender of the candidates. Conservative middle America would not like any deomocratic candidate.
And as for "them" voting for Bush in the past two elections, let's remember that Bush DID NOT win the popular vote in 2000.

I don't think it's fair to say that conservatives don't want change...I think many are more than ready for it.

I agree.

I am pretty conservative on several issues but not all. I am more than ready for change and to see what the next president can do for our country!

Well, I'm not a big Hillary fan, so I won't vote for her, and I think she has too much baggage to be electible.

But a woman, yes. Especially if the woman was a Republican.

took the words out of my mouth! But I think it will be awhile before we see a women republican running.

And I agree with sweettooth- I think it will have alot to do with which parties come out to vote the most, like it always is. I don't see people switching from Dem to Republican just b/c of race or gender.

Unless there was a good independent- they may have a chnace in this election.

Is there anywhere that show the % of registered democrats that voted the primaries compared to the % of republicans?

Female Republicans HAVE already run for President. They haven't gotten as far as Hillary. E.g., Elizabeth Dole ran for the Republican nomination in 2000...

I don't, and I don't think this country is ready for a black president either.

We live in NY. It is so different from the rest of the country. As much as I hate to say it, I don't think this country is ready for either. Chat Icon

My thoughts exactly. I think the way it's looking the Republicans are going to win this year for sure.

If this country makes the same mistake a 3rd time...I will move.

In the words of Dubya

to answer another part of the thread, I don't think Clinton would have gotten as far if not for her husband. She'd be another unknown quantity.

Re: POLL - Do you think the country is ready for the FIRST female president?

Why wouldn't a woman be ready? A woman is just another person, what is the difference? To me this question is like "Should a woman make the same amount as a man?", IMO.

You may have to start packing then...most political experts I have heard are saying that a Republican will win again since the Democratic ticket is going to have either Obama or Hillary and it's going to be near impossible to have the country (think South/Midwest) elect either for President.

What New Yorkers don't realize is this country is overall mostly conservative and is going to vote that way in a Presidential Election. Just because Borack and Hilary are winning primaries means nothing in the Presidential election since it's only Democrats voting in the primaries for one or the other.

I totally agree with this.

IMO, even the most conservative New Yorker is generally more liberal than the rest of the US (except maybe CA) and I think we often forget that.

Re: POLL - Do you think the country is ready for the FIRST female president?

Unfortunately, as of today, I don't think so.

If people would vote based on the issues and which candidate they feel is in line with what is best for the country, I think we would have a real shot at having a female or black president-elect come the November elections.

Having said that, there are far too many people who will not vote for a woman or a black person just as there are many people who will vote for whomever their party selects as the candidate, without really knowing said candidates position on the important issues, just because they always vote along their party lines. Sadly, there are also people who vote based on race, sex, religion, etc. As much as we may not understand it or agree with it, it happens.

Honestly, I am quite disgusted to see how many people don't think this country is ready for a female president. In the year 2008...you've got to be kidding me. Disappointing.

I think it's a matter of not being ready for Hillary. She's close - but too many people dislike her for her to become President.
I think if there were a better candidate, she would have a better chance.
