I was seriously considering refusing the test. Then we received an email from the superintendent saying that the state tests will be one factor used in student placement. My DS got a perfect score on the practice math test and if it is going to be used to determine if he is in the G&T program, then I want him to take it.
Perhaps I am mistaken but it was my understanding that the test scores are not provided to schools until late Summer, AFTER placement has been decided.
If the child doesnt take the test, they cant consider it for placement and would need to rely on grades from during the school year. Which is fine by me. I would hate it if my kid had a bad day and didnt ace the test, and that was used against him for next year's placement regardless of his classroom performance!
Last year they chose kids for the G&T program based on one standardized test that my son did not do well on. So it was not based on classroom performance. I keep hearing from people who oppose the test that scores are not given until next year. But then we got the email from the superintendent, so I'm not sure.
Our school has other testing for placement called InView. Are you sure they didn't use something along those lines for assessment?
I am absolutely sure.
I don't think the comment was a scare tactic. The letter said that the state tests are only one factor used in placement.

Just so you know, you can insist that your child be considered for any placement you feel he fits the criteria for, regardless of whether he takes the tests or not, and in addition to that, they cannot deny him any placement just because he refused the tests.
And scores are not received until fall... This is a fact that I am sure of.

Sorry but, I would advise anyone to check with their district and principal before going with the advice on the internet. I huge chunk of what I see on here is not reality in my district where no one opts out. Not saying opting out isn't a good option - just saying, get the facts straight from your principal and district - not this thread.

This is a scare tactic, plain and simple. As others have said, the scores do not come back in time to have an effect on placement. Shame on your superintendent.
THIS IS NOT TRUE in every district. I really hope people do their own research and don't just rely on this thread.

If any district tries to deny a child any placement he or she deserves and/or requires for ANY reason, the parent has grounds for a lawsuit and that is a fact in every school in New York State.

This is incredible. SO spot on. I know it is easy to only focus on your own personal situation. Yes, your child may do great, but this is not just about your chid anymore. (Speaking in general) It is about so much more. I realize this sounds so dramatic but we are in a situation we have not been in before. If we as educators and parents don't continue advocate for these children, and look beyond our own children, I am very scared for the future of public education.

Call NYSED. They'll tell you when the districts receive the test scores. It's impossible for them to be used as tools for placement for the following year.

It's a fact. Call the state and see for yourself. Also, a district cannot use these scores to exclude a child from an advanced program in the years after they get the scores back.

Poll Are you refusing testing
DD isn't even close to school age (so I'm crashing) but if these awful tests are still around when she is of testing age, I will absolutely 100% be opting her out.
