Pool cost
Please tell me I’m not crazy. $21k for a semi in ground 15x30 salt water filter. This includes plumbing/ electric run. No deck/ pavers we have to do that next year. I’m starting to have sticker shock and feeling a major inflation. Pool is being installed next month and I feel uneasy spending so much on a pool. We have the money and are paying cash for it but I feel panic for some reason.
We also have to spend another $6k right after for a fence since our fence isn’t to code

Pool cost
I had a semi-inground installed (I think 18 x 32) quite a few years ago (2013 or 14) and it was $10K for everything related to the pool - the pool itself, install, filter, vacuum etc. (not deck etc). But the prices for everything right now are so high, so your price might be on target

Re: Pool cost
This was like 15 years ago so you really can't go by my pricing. My semi was like $13,000 back then all inclusive- decking, permits, electrical, etc
It's 18X34
No salt water filter- a mineral purification system though so a little more pricey than straight chlorine sanitizer.
With inflation etc and the cost of everything lately, i don't' think you are so far off.
But ours DID include all the decking. Cedar deck with a walk around and a full sun deck
Bear in mind your taxes won't go up for a semi and you won't need the brick work around it- that was the big push for us to go semi instead of in ground

Re: Pool cost
I paid about 13- 14k - five years ago for a 16 x 32 that was with an aluminum deck around one side- mine is not semi its above ground I worried too much about semi with my kids. I already had electric, and mine isn't salt. Prices seem crazy, but truthfully we use our pool a lot and I don't regret it.

Re: Pool cost
That sounds high, but I think prices are just out of control right now. I was just quoted over 2k for a landscaper to build me a raised garden bed. Literally 8 boards nailed together in a rectangle and it's going to cost over $2,000? Trying to get quotes for a bathroom renovation, one guy told me some of the bathrooms he's doing cost 80k. He didn't give me the estimate yet, but he's insane if he thinks I'm spending anywhere near that for a bathroom renovation.

Sounds about right. Pool costs have gone up so much. I’m trying not to think about it and I’m focusing instead on how I’ll be in it all summer on a float. For what I’m paying, I’m living in that thing.

Honestly- it's worth it. We get so much use out of it and it just makes summer weekends so much better The only thing I was was that the season was longer. Because it's a lot of money for something you can only use 3 months of the year.
But other than that, we got our money's worth and more out of our pool

I have twin toddlers and honestly our lives have been shit the last 2 years. My MIL died on their birthday last year, then covid and we had to cancel our aruba trip when MIL was sick. I’m doing this for them. They are little but I want them to have an awesome summer every year. To be honest idk if things will come down anytime soon. It could be years and I’m not waiting years for a pool.

That’s what I keep hearing. Once I found out I was facing another summer working from home again, I quickly decided to just go for it.
As for the 3 month season, I’d love to get a pool heater next summer. I hear it can extend the season from May through October. I did get a solar cover for this summer so I’ll see how that works out.

Re: Pool cost
I can't help you with the cost but I wanted to say that since you are spending the money have you looked into a heater too? It will extend your season greatly and allow for night swimming.
I don't think it would be too much extra to add one now - especially since you having the electrician there for the install.
I wish I could add a heater to my pool but it's stupid expensive. I have an in-ground 20x40 and the heater alone is $8k.

We have a heater. It does extend the season a bit, but bear in mind when it's very cool out in Sept and Oct you don't feel like going in the pool, even if the pool is warm. A hot tub level of warmth yes ,a pool not so much. Also, it does take quite some time to warm the pool up if the water is very cold. Sometimes I have to run it for almost a whole day to get the water temp up enough. But the heater is great for when you open the pool in May and the water is 55 degrees. So it definitely helps get you in that pool sooner. And in August, believe it or not, there are cold nights and mornings that lower the pool temp so it's nice to warm it back up. All in all I don't regret getting it. Definitely was a good investment

So side note- my husband just came in and said the pressure treated wood boards he needs to replace a bunch on our deck that have rotted over the years are now double the price they were last summer when he was buying them. Double. Literally double. He was floored.
Something not great is going on in this country with the price of things.
So just something to consider- we seem to be in a state of really bad inflation.
Lumber is actually having a shortage right now! Contractors are having a hard time even finishing projects because of it.
Production slowed down because of Covid and now they have to play catch-up. I did read eventually it will go back down.
Because of this I probably won’t start any projects that require lumber cause it would kill me to pay double the price due to a shortage
I am sure it’s the same for pools right now. Prices I am sure are insane because of the demand. I’m in the fence about getting a pool but I will definitely wait to see if prices go down cause I hate over paying.

I am having a contractor do construction in my backyard and we were told from the beginning that prices of lumber have had a significant increase this year.

I am 100% not trying to make a political statement, but I also read that we get a lot of lumber from Canada and because Biden shut down the pipeline to them, they are not supplying us like normal. That is worrisome if that is the case because who knows if/when that will ever change.
As for the pool, I honestly don't think that sounds too bad. Last year when I was pricing them out (and I got in before the craziness started), semi-ingrounds were only a few thousand less than a full inground. I think the quote I got for the semi I wanted was $23K. Just the pool.
I also agree with the suggestion to get a heater. My kids swam in the pool until we closed it on October 22nd and now it's been opened since mid-April.

The built in quote I got was $31k for the pool, electric etc. deck and pavers would have been more but I didn’t get the in ground because of the tax increase but now I come to find out it’s not all that much. Now I’m just so confused. I have no idea what to do. I’m just trying to ride out the feeling of being overwhelmed with costs

I think that's too much. I would get another quote. Lumber is expensive right now byt without a deck I can't see how that's so much.

Re: Pool cost
Lumber is crazy pricing right now. There are also hardwood and softwood lumber tariffs in place because Canada was playing games with supply. They were found guilty of manipulating supply for years before the pandemic, so prices were set for a while, and those pricing discounts sunset. So it is like a terrible storm where covid lead to harvesting shortages, the prices were set to increase, the tariffs were increased, and demand has skyrocketed.

Stupid question (I never had a pool, nor knew anyone who had a pool)
Whats the difference between an above ground pool and a inground (or semi in ground) ?
Other than the "well one is above ground, one is below" If thats the only difference, whats the advantage of an in ground pool? Just because it looks better?
Aren't above ground ones pretty cheap? Is it size? You can't get above ground anywhere near the size of in ground?

Above ground is just that-it sits above the ground. Inground is dug fully into the ground Semi inground is where they dig down a few feet and bury the pool that much- then put decking or whatever else around it. You can't bury an above ground pool though- you need special extruded walls that can handle the weight of being buried etc So it's a different construction. The advantage to a semi is it won't raise your taxes like an inground would, the cost is a bit less to install as well. My semi is bigger than some ingrounds I looked at for the same price, so it's not a size issue all the time. And yes, an inground pool is aesthetically more pleasing to many

If above ground is cheaper (I assume it is because I remember when I was young I saw ads for it being only a few hundred dollars) why doesn't everyone get it?
Is it only because it doesn't look as nice as in ground? or is it because above grounds can't be the same size as in ground? or something else?
Thanks

Preference I guess. If you have an inground it's a lot more pleasing to the eye in the landscape of the yard. With a semi, you can do a deck around it or even stone pavers- steps up to it- to make it really look nice without the added expense and tax increase of an inground. It's honestly for looks I think. And yes, you can get a much bigger inground because you have it built to your custom measurements. Semi's and ingrounds only go so big. But for the sole purpose of cooling off, swimming around, floating, playing etc- if you are looking for cost savings, there is nothing wrong with an above ground. It does all the same things
