Potty Training - Average Age??
so today, i posted that I was peed on this morning on facebook and 2 of my friends mentioned that they are potty training their children either now or soon....(one is 15 or 16 months and the other will be 18 months).
What is the average age where you SHOULD start potty training? I'm NOT saying my friends are doing anything wrong at all (to each his own), but is that early or am i out of touch? Obviously, i've never done it before, so i could be out of touch (no offense will be taken of course if i am)...
so - how old was DC when you started potty training?
HOW did you do it?
tia!

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
Well I bought DS a potty when he was 18 months old but he was not potty trained until he was 3 years old. He had no interest in it before then.

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
my PED todl me to wait till DS is 2.5, she said success rates are \higher at that point. I'm taking her advice, no need to rush don't want to get aggravated

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
I have had my son pooping on the potty from 10 months - he is 13 months now - we get most of the poops in the potty but he wears diapers all the time- i just know his face - now he is startign to go longer between pee and sometimes his diaper is dry so i put him on he pees- he definetly gets what he is supposed to do ont he body but cannot tell me yet
he goes to daycare so i can't do it full time yet
i may try the 3-day potty training method at 16 months over martin luther king weekend - but we will see
my son was regular so we started then he wasn't but i learned the face and threw him on when i saw it - so even if he does not train till 3 i figure he won't have fear of pooping on the toilet then - most kids learn fear around 2 and want to control certain things
it is personal preference when you start and the outcome is determinitive of the child and parent

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
Everything I have read said the ideal age to start trying is usually between 27 and 32 months but that the average age when a child usually trains is around 3. Girls will usually potty train earlier than boys. In order to potty train your child they MUST first recognize the urge to go and the dirty diaper has to bother them. If you try and force the issue before they are ready it's going to be a disaster.
Right now my DD is 2 and there is no way she's ready. She will tell you when she poops but she could careless there is a poop in her diaper. She never mentions pee and with the poop, she tells you AFTER the fact. It's not "I have to poop". It's "I pooped". She does know what a potty is and what it's for but she's not at all ready right now. I am confident when she's ready, I will know and if that means she doesn't potty train until 3 or even 4 then so be it. Doctors don't consider lack of potty training an issue until children are past the age of 4.

IMO, I think it SHOULD be done when you feel your child is ready and when you can devote the time to do it consistently.
Abby is 26 months. We bought her a potty when we moved into our new house and put it next to the toilet. She plays with the Elmo on the front and thats about it. Once Jeremy came along, all bets were off and still are. I havent gotten my groove yet managing the two of them and I know it would be a complete FAIL if I started right now. I also want to make sure that day care will be consistent with what we decide upon.

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
Introduced it to Ryan ca. 15-16 months I believe (just had it in the bathroom)
He peed for the first time on it at 18 months. He continued to use it 0-3x/day.
He was trained (pee and poop) by exactly 2.5 yrs old (exactly one yr after he first used it )
We will introduce it to Colin in a few months - which seems so weird to me

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
Samantha just turned 21 months this week.
She's been showing signs she is ready or getting ready to be potty trained for the past 3 months. She goes off in private when she has to poop, and will tell Lenny or I that she has a poop which means she wants her diaper changed asap.
However, with a newborn at home and the other issues going on right now, for me, it's not the right time to potty train her. I'm thinking I may officially start next summer when she is 2.5

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
My boys will be 2 on the 24th and have been telling me they have "boop" for a couple of months now. They come in the bathroom with both of us and say pee and poop. They know that is what the toilet is for. I have 2 potty books I read them which they are very interested in. I will buy potties in the next couple of weeks and do it in a "no pressure" way. I really think it depends on the kid. If they show interest, foster it. If not, don't

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
I waited till they were older and it literally took a few days for them to be "trained". I hear all my friends talk about how long it took to potty train when they started that young(I am talking months long) while it took my oldest 3 days and my youngest 6 days.
My oldest trained at 27 months and my youngest at 24 months.

this is how you know they are ready my PED said it should never take months , it should take a few days. that's why I decided to wait

same here. he went a time or two on it during his 2's, but he wasn't fully trained until a month after his 3rd birthday.

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
i dont think their is an age...I know people who trained their kids at 18 months or some at 4. Plus I really think it depends on the kid and their personality. I would say average age is 2.5-3.5 for boys, maybe a little earlier for girls? We tried alittle when DS was 2.5-3 and it wasnt successful for many reasons, did it again when he was 3 yrs and 2 months and he trained within a week...couldnt believe how easy it was when he was ready

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
We potty trained DD at 28 months. I would have done it earlier had life not gotten in the way, but DD definitely showed signs of being ready fairly early and I was eager to get it done with because I was pregnant with DS.
I don't anticipate trying to potty train DS as early as DD, but I don't plan on having more children so I won't feel the need to have it done as early. By the time he's 3 I'm sure it will be done or we'll be actively working on it.

We have a potty seat that DS will sit on, but he hasn't done anything into it yet. He will sometimes tell me 'pee' if he is actually going pee in his diaper at that moment . He still lies if I asked him if he pooped (kid, I can smell you).
He is not ready to be potty trained yet at 2. Nor do I have the patience or time to be around a potty 24/7 even when we leave the house.
My mom told me, when DS is consistently dry in his diaper at night, then I should potty train. I like her advice.

Tried at 24 months with DD and she was not ready. Tried again at 28 months and she pretty much got it in one day. When they're ready, they're ready.

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
i'm home with him the 1st week of january this coming year, so i'm going to try it then. I'll buy him a potty for christmas. we'll see if he shows interest.
If we're home and I see the poop face, i bring him to the toilet and he goes. He's also starting to hide when he has to go to the bathroom, so that's a good start to knowing what his body is doing!

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
We started 2 months after DD turned 3, and she took to it rather quickly - with a few bumps in the road along the way!
I don't count her sitting on the potty at 18 mos as the beginning of potty training, FYI.

Re: Potty Training - Average Age??
haven't even bothered.
My aunt tried and she peed a few times on the potty.
She's 26m and could care less. Fine by me.
When she's ready, she'll be ready, end of story in my book.
Now if she asks me which maxi makes her diaper look big, I'll worry.
