Potty Training Advice...

Uggh I have dreaded this day but I have to start because he is 2 and a half now. I'll start right after the holidays are over.

So how do I begin this? I need suggestions. DS can talk talk yet. He babbles but it's in his own language. He can put some words together and says lots of words but how do I teach him to say when he has to go to the bathroom. I have no clue on how to start this whole process of potty training. Please help...

Re: Potty Training Advice...

I did a search when I started potty training & found some helpful old posts. Can't offer any advice myself as DD did NOT pick it up when we attempted at 2 years 4 months. It was a total failure! She just wasn't ready yet.

I'm due with DD #2 when DD #1 will be 2 1/2 so I'm putting it off til the spring when she'll be closer to 3 and hopefully more cooperative and better able to control herself.

Re: Potty Training Advice...

dont stress and dont bother for another few months. my older boys were 3, and 3 and a few months when they "got it" and wanted to potty train.

trust me, you'll be all excited when he's potty trained, and then the excitement of when they wanna go potty in a public place, you'll be missing the diapers Chat Icon

I dont plan until at least the spring at the earliest.

Quite honestly, if he doesn't have the language skills to tell you when he needs to use the potty, it will most likely be too frustrating for both of you. I'd start introducing the vocabulary he needs first, then try in a few months.

He'll let you know when he is ready.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions...Maybe I can start off slow and not really push him if he can't verbally tell me when he has to go...

Re: Potty Training Advice...

Even if his language skills aren't there, doesn't mean he doesn't understand so i see nothing wrong with starting to put him on the toilet. it certainly sounds like he can say the word Pee and if he gets it, just saying Pee or Pee Pee to you will be enough for you to know. You can get some pull ups for him to wear - not so much bc I think the kids care that they are like underwear, just for the convenience of being able to pull it up and down. Put him on the toilet a few times a day and say "want to go Pee pee?" have him see your DH peeing too or bring him in with you as well. My DS #1 never sat to pee so you never know which he might take to - seeing Daddy do it might give him the interest in trying it out. get a step stool so he can read the toilet. Read him some potty books too. And just keep putting him on the potty. If he's not ready, he's not ready but it can't hurt to do it. My DS is the same age and I do those things but all he does is sit on the potty and make pee sounds with his mouth. He's peed on the potty 1 or 2x so far. Just keep talking about the potty a few times a day to get him more familiar, he'll get it in his own time.
