I certainly hope not. I would rather everyone keep their own money for the holidays and splurge on their kids then give my dd a gift. My plan was to bring in something for the holiday party in terms of food that everyone can share. To me celebrating the holidays together is way better then a classroom gift exchange.

Re: Preschool/Nursery School - Do you get gifts for the kids in the class at Christmas?

In both of my DDs classes, there were a few kids/moms who gave out goodie bags (pencils, erasers, stickers, candy, etc.) to the whole class on both Halloween and Christmas. I think it's overkill and my kids already have so much crap that IMO it's a waste of money, but a nice gesture! Some did homemade chocolate lollipos too.

In DD's K class they did a grab bag.

Last year the kids did a book exchange in class - everyone brought in one wrapped book.

No. However, we asked the parents to volunteer to do a goody bag for each child when they have a class party for the holiday. So far, we did it for Halloween and Thanksgiving and will do for Christmas. One parent does it only! So for each child, they will bring home 1 goody bag for each party.

I have to ask, why on earth would anyone buy presents for every kid in a class? Thats serious overkill and its really just moms trying to "outdo" each other IMO. There is always "that mom" who makes the goody bags, even when told by the school not to, and "that mom" who sends in gifts for the class. Its ridiculous. Its a show for the other parents, a popularity contest so to speak. "Look at me, I am the best mom, I gave all the kids a gift".

Good grief.
I am sorry to sound like such a scrooge, but this is a huge pet peeve of mine as a mom and a former teacher.

Re: Preschool/Nursery School - Do you get gifts for the kids in the class at Christmas?

in DD's preschool, both this year and last - some mothers have send goodie bags in for all of the kids during each holiday party. (Id say about 1.2 of the students moms) I agree with above...its a bit overkill...there are only so many stickers..pencils...etc that a kid can have. I usually dont send in the goodie bag. As a single Mom, I have to cut costs where I can and I just see these holiday goodie bags as a waste. JMO.

I do however, Love the idea that Lisa's DD's school did with the book exchange. I would do that if the school had that.

I can't speak for anyone else, but we started to after we were the ONLY family who didn't. I'm glad the school said nobody can, it was a PITA.

Last year for Halloween my DS came home with all these goodie bags, so I felt like an idiot bc I didn't make any. So now I do for every holiday. I thought it was overkill, but my DH told me I was being a fart and the kids like it. So I do them now!

Same here. I don't think anyone is trying to outdo anyone. I know personally I don't judge the ones that don't give. I could care less either way. My DD gets excited coming home with stuff so we give something little.

i think it's ridiculous and excessive, but it's the norm in the district where I work.
I have "no goodie bag" rule. I think most moms are secretly glad!Chat Icon

Instead of doing goodie bags of presents for the children in my son's "class" (he is 2 1/2 yrs. old and goes to daycare fulltime) we are getting a present for the classroom. I think I am going to get some puzzles and playdoh. Those are things that they go through a lot and the kids love them. This way my son has the opportunity to give and its not wasted little nicknack type things that we get in goodie bags. Honestly my son got a couple of goodie bags for Halloween and we had to throw most of the stuff out b/c it wasn't appropriate for his age group!

I do a little goodie bag for Halloween and Holidays - it's a PITA. A pencil, small candy cane and sheet of stickers in a bag.

DS#1 is in K and it doesn't seem to be the norm. For Halloween, I did give everyone a simple bookmark - I''ll do the same for the holidays.

What district are you in that allows you to send in things for the whole class? In my district, parents are not allowed to send in ANYTHING unless it was specifically requested by the teacher or class moms. There is a whole "safe child" protocal. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING gets into the classroom or to the children without going through the teacher. Our principal stated this at the very first PTA meeting.

The goody bag is for preschool/daycare

For my DS in Kindergarten, I sent 21 bookmarks in DS's folder and the teacher handed them out to the students. I'm in Harborfields.

I'm not doing anything- but honestly don't see it as moms trying to outdo each other. WE hate that little crap as parents- but kids love it. I think thats why some do it.
I like the bookmarks idea- very cute!

Re: Preschool/Nursery School - Do you get gifts for the kids in the class at Christmas?

With the OP's original Q - are we talking goody bags or actual gifts? Bc we've never had a gift given beyond the goody bags. My kids' preschool does a grab bag. Nothing with elementary school giftwise, which is fine by me. As for goody bags with preschool, I'm on my 6th straight year of kids in preschool and I never knew goody bags were found to be such a nuisance to the parents whose children receive them. Nor did I ever see them as a parent being anything but nice. Sure it's junky little stuff but like someone else said, the kids love it. I've given them (not every holiday but whenever I had the time or inclination), we've received them, I never knew there was any disdain. Is that what it's come to now? Yeesh

I didn't either Liz! It's just a bookmark (25/$1) and the librarian in me.

As a teacher, when 25 kids EACH bring in goodie bags for the class it is overwhelming and a huge PITA. 1 book mark (or pencil or sticker or whatever) is obviously more reasonable, but even then, it's 25 MORE things for the kids to touch, lose, play with, take from each other etc.

We do a book swap. You bring a wrapped book in and they go into a pile and each child picks one. Everyone gets one present and they all seem to love it. We've been doing this for years at the Pre-school and no one is upset. We ask that you spend no more than $5 on the book.
