Re: private practice---re: leaving baby in the car
It can happen to anyone. The person who loves their baby more than everyone else. The person who thinks of their baby every 10 seconds. The best parent in the world. The one who tells everyone it would never happen to them. The one who says how horrible other people are that have accidentally left their child. It happens. It shouldn't happen but it does.
It's almost always a change in routine that does it. People go on automatic pilot all of the time while driving.
While I haven't left a baby in the car, I can only pray it never happens....to any of us (again). I do like the idea for women to put their pocketbook in the backseat as a reminder.

Re: private practice---re: leaving baby in the car
I know someone who lost a baby cousin because of this
Such a horrible thing to go through. To anyone who think it CANT happen to them, think again . . .
I think the idea about leaving your bag in the back seat is a GREAT idea! Ive also read that putting something of the baby's on the front passenger's seat helps too

Re: private practice---re: leaving baby in the car
This used to be my fear, that when ds would stop screaming in the car seat id forget he was there, but now I have this habit, where, when the car is in park, even if I'm not driviing, I bust open my door, run out to ds's door and scoop him out like he's on fire.
I think the past 6m, all that screaming was training for me.

Re: private practice---re: leaving baby in the car
I cannot imagine, I just can't but obviously it happens.
I know I related a bit the other day. Noah was at School and the twins were napping. I have no idea why but I got up and put my shoes on to go to the store. TOTALLY forgot they were in there sleeping for a minute. I realized before I had moved from that position, but I thought to myself " so THATS how people leave their kdis in cars"..

I don't understand it either, but I read an article from a family that did that...... and there was a great tip which I do every day now.......
When you put your child in the carseat, put your purse in the backseat, forcing you to go into the back.
ok, while this is a good idea i hate to think that i would remember to get my purse before i remembered to get my child.
like linda, i actually do the opposite and forget that hes NOT with me. im so used to constantly looking in the rear at stop lights to check on him that i do it out of habit. and when i dont see him, i actually get sad

Re: private practice---re: leaving baby in the car
It is scary how quickly it can happen.
I remember that when I first went back to work my DS was being cared for by two different women in two locations (do not recommend that). I was heading off to work, dropping off DS on the way. As I approached the exit for work I took it totally forgetting to drop off DS until I had already gotten onto the expressway. DS was so quite and in my head I had already dropped him off, so when I looked up in my rearview I almost cried, and laughed at myself that I was on autopilot. It is scary. I mean I didnt leave him anywhere and I caught it in a few seconds but the fact that it even happened was scary.
