horrific, arcane and total BULLSHIIT. to force a woman to have an unnecessary medical procedure to PUNISH her for wanting to have an abortion is abhorrent.
I agree. I am OUTRAGED over this. I don't understand how anyone can defend the practice. If YOU want to have an ultrasound and look, then do it, but don't tell me I have to. This War on Women has GOT to end!!! An abortion is a huge deal and takes a lot of heartache and gut wrenching thought to go through with. No one should have the right to force this on anyone.
This makes me beyond angry. I am fuming as I type this. And I agree, who is making the fathers look??? They created it as well!
I know we have totally different views on abortion.....but I have to say that not all women view abortion as a heart wrenching thing filled with heartache although they should. SOME (not all) women have multiple abortions without really thinking about it. I know too many women who have this mentality. And that kind of mentality has to STOP. There needs to be more education given to women of exactly what they are doing, its not the same as walking in to have your gall bladder out, or some routine medical procedure. It SHOULD be a very emotional and heart wrenching thing to have to choose to do...how to instill that in women, I'm not sure. I didn't say I agreed with it, but not sure its the worst thing in the word.

Vast majority of the Women who have multiple abortions aren't going to stop after hearing the heartbeat. It won't stop them. Instead you are torturing women who made this CHOICE but not lightly.

Re: Pro-choice or pro-life, how do you feel about this
I believe a woman should have the right to have an abortion. If it were men in this country having babies, i dont think abortions would even be an issue.
However, I dont think i could ever make that decision myself to have one. When Dh and I were waiting in the hospital after our 12 week sono, and I had to go get bloodwork..we sat there and stared at those pictures. He looked at me and said "how do people have abortions after you see something like this?" and i thought the same thing.
But that doesnt mean the goverment should dictate a woman having an ultrasound and force her to look at pictures in hopes of changing her mind.

Again, I didn't say it was the right thing to do (forcing a woman to look at the ultrasound).
But I do think something needs to be done so that the women who ARE uneducated or unaware of what an abortion entails fully understand, that's all.
I'm pro-life. I feel very strongly about rights of an unborn child. The emotions that everyone is feeling about a woman being tortured is exactly how I feel about a childs life ending. I don't see it as a clump of cells. I see it as a baby..and not everyone else does. And I certainly know that many many women make the choice and it isn't easy at all for them..it IS heart wrenching and awful and I do feel tremendously for them. I just happen to know that the women in the world that DO go through something like this without a second thought, well , I will never understand that.

Yes.
And who is the government to assume that every woman who chooses to have an abortion does so bc they are uneducated or uninformed?
I would never have an abortion. But I also would NEVER tell any woman she can't. It is not my or anyone else's place to tell a woman what to do with her body.
As others have said if this were a man it would not even be a fuckingg issue.

I am very glad that incest victims and rape victims will not have to go through this..but otherwise I think this is a good idea..It will give a women not 100% sure if she wants to have an abortion..maybe a chance to think about options...ie adoption..

exactly. you both said exactly what I thought. anyone who has an abortion and doesn't care isn't going to be swayed or moved by an ultrasound.
who do they think they are forcing grown women to have to do this? abortion is LEGAL. it is really scaring me how women are being degraded and considered unable to form their own opinions for what is best for them lately.

I have to agree.
To me the larger issue that is looming is women's rights. Whether or not you are pro life is secondary to the fact that women are being stripped of their rights in 2012 bc the assumption is we are not capable on educating ourselves to make the best choice for ourselves.
Sad day when a woman votes for a man with that belief.

as far as bringing the fathers into the conversation, it sounds like many women who are pro choice don't want the father involved in the decision when they decide to abort, so what are you accomplishing by making the fathers look? would it make a difference if the father said that he wanted to keep the child and care for it after seeing the ultrasound? you can't say that women should have the right to choose and men shouldn't tell them what to do, but then in the same breath say that the fathers should be forced to look as well.
*I* never said such a thing. However, I do believe it's solely the woman's final decision. What I have a problem with is that the woman is forced by the government and the man is not. It is not the woman's choice to look at the ultrasound. That is the difference.
i didn't mean to imply that you said it, but if you have been following the other spin off post about fathers, you will see what i mean. and ultimately it's not the father in most cases making the decision to have the abortion, its the mother. not saying i disagree with you that the father should be held accountable, but i just don't know what that would accomplish. and like i said, most women don't want the men involved in that part of the decision.
Perhaps, the men would more willing to take some responsibility for birth control up front.

I am not going to read this whole thread because I want to leave my honest opinion.
No, women should not be forced to look at the ultrasound. The decision is hard enough to make. Unless you have walked in a woman's shoes who has had to make this choice then you should not be so judgemental.
Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, the simple question here is if the government is violating our civil liberties by forcing us to look at a the ultrasound. This goes beyond pro-choice or pro-life, it is a consitutional issue plain and simple. Yes, you can argue, what about the rights of the fetus? At this point and time the rights of the mother override that so therefore it really shouldn't even be an issue. So until you change that law, this law should not be in effect.

i think it's a little inappropriate to say that whoever is thinking differently should " have their head examined" . i think abortion is murder of a helpless child. that is my opinion. but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. stating that someone else who disagrees with your view should have their heads examined is called stirring the pot and starting drama. this conversation so far has been civil. lets keep it that way, and respect everyone's right to have an opinion without name calling.

I am not reading before responding because I don't want to get into the drama of it all. I am PRO LIFE with exception to rape and incest victims (I do also believe in birth control and the morning after pill)! It was something I struggled with for a long time because I see why women are so angry about the choice being taken from them, however I feel as though the weight of making a decision such as having sex comes with consequences and if you are willing to take the risk of having unprotected sex or sex in general you should also be ready to deal with those consequences such as pregnancy. I know far to many women who use abortion as birth control and it truly disgusts me. However FORCING a women to hear a heartbeat and to have a trans vaginal sono is a violation on so many levels. I mean the government telling me I have to have a probe stuck into my body against my will and to be forced to listen to a baby's heart beat no way! This reminds me of the force feeding of suffragist during their fight.

This may be true, but birth control is not 100% effective. There was just a recall on a pill because it didn't have enough hormone in it to prevent pregnancy. I'm sure there were pregnancies that resulted from that. My own DD is also the result of failed birth control. I personally would never have an abortion, but there are situations where women decide to have them because they were taking precautions and they failed. I just think it's cruel to force a woman who is already making a heartbreaking decision to look at a sonogram and listen to the doctor describe it to them.

I think this is such an excellent point, and I really appreciate this argument coming from someone who does identify as pro-life. While I myself am pro-choice, that doesn't even really shape my feelings on this specific issue. What you have outlined here is EXACTLY why I am so appalled by it! Thank you!

Re: Pro-choice or pro-life, how do you feel about this
Women shouldnt have to jump through hoops in order to obtain a legal medical procedure. It is no ones business but the woman and her doctor. This requirement (to look at the screen) serves to medical purpose, it is a blatant attempt to shame, humiliate, and bully a woman into keeping an unwanted pregnancy.
I also find it laughable that the same Republicans who introduce bills like this are the first to complain about welfare, wic, and medicaid funding for the children who are already here. Are they only pro-life until the child is born?

This is the one hypocracy that I cannot get my head around and I have (historically) considered myself a Republican.
Seriously, why are these people so against giving women choices?

Re: Pro-choice or pro-life, how do you feel about this
I posted this on the other thread, but I feel Its relevant on this thread as well:
(I want to be clear that I say the below with respect. The "YOU" part is anyone who is using THEIR beliefs and morals to force them on me (woman).)
1. I do not believe that "life" starts at conception. For me, its the potential of life, not life. It cant be sustained outside the woman untill, at LEAST 20 something weeks?
2. I believe that, although a VERY difficult decision (and all that goes with having an abortion), yes, its still JUST a medical procedure.
3. I believe that no one, on either side, will dis-suade someone from the other.
4. I believe that a womans life trumps ANY decision over any unborn fetus.
5. I believe by making archaic rules (MUST look at sono, must get parents permission, no 3rd trimester abortion, must do X before getting an abortion) that it makes women second class citizens. It puts womens lives in danger.
6. I believe, again, that a womans life is more important than the unborns.
7. And with that said, I beleieve that abortion must stay legal so WOMEN dont die. Whatever their reason's. It must be legal, and safe, and accessable.
8. I think its TORTURE to FORCE YOUR beliefs (not YOU specifically, but the religious right) on anyone. Since they believe that "life begins at conception", well, then they must make sure any woman considering an abortion MUST do things to maybe save the baby because YOU have a problem with it.
What happens if I dont have a problem with it?
9. I think, most women, CERTAINLY not all, know EXACTLY what they are they doing when they have an abortion. To make them feel worse is just disgusting and deplorable.
10. To force a woman to undergo a medical procedure, just so YOU can feel better, just do YOU can say "we tried", just so YOU can say "I forced my morals on somsone else"....is equivilant to communism.
11. And yes, I believe that I should be able to have an medical procedure without the GOVERNMENTS say. Period. I want my tubes tied? Great. I want an abortion? Great. I want a wart removed? Great.
Every law thats passed that LIMITS womens MEDICAL rights, is a law that makes this a communist state, and MAKES WOMEN second class citizens.
Every law thats passed limiting abortion is FORCING your religion on me. And lets face it, I think most people who are againt abortion are against it because of their religious beliefs. Im not saying ALL.
12. And no. Ultimatly I beleieve that the father should have no say. My body, my rules. My decision.
I submit this for discussion and in NO way want this to come off as disrespectfull. Thats not my intention.

Re: Pro-choice or pro-life, how do you feel about this
Posted by VanderZwang
Great.

Very well said. I 100000% agree with you
