PSA: Update on breastpump coverage by insurance!
I know there was another thread going but I wanted to start a new one.
I called my insurance company to see if by chance they would provide any coverage on a breastpump. They told they would cover 90% of the cost. I called the medical suppliers they suggested and none of them were of any help. After calling them a second time they gave me the info for Edge Park...an out-of-state medical supplier who carry breast pumps and will ship for free.
Today I got the confirmation that I only had to pay 10% on a Medela Freestyle - this pump is $380 at BRU but I got it for a whopping $23.21!!
Once again the info for Edge Park is:
Tel: 1-866-528-0357 Edge Park
Definitely take the time to call and find out if you have any benefits no matter what your insurance!! They can place the order for you and they will call you once they have verified with your insurance telling you the remaining balance. They will NOT ship out the product to you until they get payment so it really doesn't hurt at all to try.
Good luck girls!!

Re: PSA: Update on breastpump coverage by insurance!
Thanks for the update and the supplier info!! Just curious, did you have to get anything signed from your OB for authorization?

Re: PSA: Update on breastpump coverage by insurance!
THANKS FOR SHARING!!!!!!!
that is awesome...i got the same info from empire (different coverage though) to use edgepark and i was looking at their website today to see if they carried Medela and didn't see it...I'm sooo happy to know that they do!!!
YAY!!!
Not to rub it in but my insurance covers the breast pump at 100% so IT IS worth it to check with your insurance carrier before spending the $$$

Re: PSA: Update on breastpump coverage by insurance!
A huge thanks to Azoodie for posting about this last week. I am still waiting to find out if my insurance will cover ANY part of it (PRAYING it is!!!), but I wanted to add this...
You don't need to call your insurance to check. You can call EdgePark directly and they will set up an account for you (takes 2 minutes, just give them your basic info: name, address, insurance co, etc) and tell them which breastpump you would like.
Then THEY will reach out to the insurance company and find out what portion, if any is covered.
If it's covered 100%, then they will automatically ship it out to you.
If it's not, even if you have to pay $1, they will call you first. Then you can decide to go ahead with the order or not.
Definitely worth it to try!
And thanks for mentioning that the pump costs less anyway through Edgepark! If my insurance doesn't cover it at all, I will definitely order it directly from them and save the money (it's over $150 savings!!!).

Re: PSA: Update on breastpump coverage by insurance!
I just checked their site and no medela pumps came up. Did you find it in their online catalog or did you just call and ask if they had it?

I noticed the same thing. When I called Edgepark, they asked me which pump I wanted and I told them (Medela Freestyle). No issues at all. I think they do carry Medela, but don't have it on the website.

Re: PSA: Update on breastpump coverage by insurance!
I posted about this on another thread but my OB was NOT willing to sign the paperwork b/c a breast pump is not "medically necessary" outside of a situation such as a baby in the NICU, etc.
Oh well, no luck for me.
I didn't know that it worked this way but now I do, lol, and I guess my OB is just by the book. I can't blame him b/c I always say no when people ask me to break legal rules, lol.
Anyway, when the Edge Park lady called me back to tell me I asked her about it and she said it is 50-50/ a lot of Drs just sign it and a lot don't.
I guess you just won't know unless u try though!

Yeah, I just called to find out the status and apparently my insurance also will only cover it if it's medically necessary! So they are waiting for my doctor to sign the forms, but me thinks she won't. Still praying she will though!!!

I asked this about the Freestyle and it was $403 which is a lot more than the $305ish that my grandma paid at BBB w/ the 20% coupon. (It was a shower gift but I was returning it if the insurance covered it).

Remember, it totally depends on YOUR plan, not the insurance company itself.
