I have GHI and sent a msg to customer service through the website and was told it's not covered.

But who knows -- maybe you can try and see if you get another answer.

The coverage is based on what your employer decides not the insurance company. So I'd just call the insurance company and ask. I also have BCBS and the plan I have is that medical equipment is covered if it's deemed medically necessary by your doctor and you buy from one of their approved pharmacies. But that's the plan my employer set up with BCBS. BCBS doesn't decide, my company does.

Sorry...but that's not entirely true. It depends on if your company is ASO(funded by employer) or FI(Fully Insured). If they are ASO your company funds the plan and the insurance company administers it for them. Then it's up to your company to decide. If it's FI they can purchase a plan where it's covered and the company cannot make the decision.

I called my insurance company (United) about this-my company's particular plan ONLY covers a breast pump if it's deemed medically necessary and I can't breast feed my LO directly.

It's worth it to call though!

Ours too, My insurance (UHC) said that after the baby is born I would need to get a script from a doctor to cover it. Some of the reasons the insurance would cover it for were but not limited to, Mastis and palate issues. It totally depends on your particular plan. What was super annoying was that this was a recent change had I been pregnant last year my plan covered it, bah.

I just called United to find out about my coverage and they told me they do not cover breast pumps, EVEN if medically necessary for the baby. I am not surprised since they do not even cover pre-natal vitamins. The pharmacist at CVS said she's never seen anything like it.

I called my insurance first as well and they said they wont cover unless there is a medical reason and I would have a $500 deductible Chat Icon So I called Edge Park just to see and they said all I have to pay is $20 and they will get it out for me the following day as long as they get a script from the doctor...so I would call edge park anyway just to see its worth a try

I just called Edgepark directly, 1-800-321-0591, and the customer service rep told me that he was pretty sure that GHI does cover it, but that he will put in the order, submit the claim, and call me first if it was not covered, or if I needed to pay anything toward it.

Everyone is right, they are SUPER nice and helpful at Edgepark. Good Luck!

Any NYC teachers with GHI/empire know if they cover the breastpump? Would they use the GHI(doctor) insurance or the empire(hospital) one?

Re: PSA: Update on breastpump coverage by insurance!

Just wanted to bump this for anyone who plans to BF and doesn't know that breast pumps may be covered by your insurance company.

I have Magnacare (in case anyone else does as well) and mine was covered 100%. I just got the email from Edgepark that my Medela Freestyle shipped! I am paying nothing and would be doing a dance if I didn't have to take it easy. If it wasn't covered I was going to wait and see if BFing worked for us and then buy one down the road if it did. But hey, if I can get a $400 pump for free, why not have it on hand?

Definitely call Edgepark and see if your insurance covers the pump you want!

Re: PSA: Update on breastpump coverage by insurance!

I have anthemn bcbs and they said it was covered but only if it is medically necessary. My dh's employer offers a great plan, we don't pay anything for a family plan, copays are only $10 ans scripts are really cheap. I was shocked that this wasn't covered. I am going to call again b/c the pump is so expensive.

even though my insurance (united) didn't cover it, Edgepark sold me the Medela Freestyle for $176 including tax and shipping - still the best deal around.

Re: PSA: Update on breastpump coverage by insurance!

this is so great to read. during my last pregnancy it was covered under "durable medical equipment" but I couldn't find any supplier to actually get it. It was the oddest thing, and very frustrating.

I just got a positive pregnancy test this morning and I'll be looking into this again in the coming months.

I have a different insurance carrier now, so fingers crossed I can get one!

Just wanted to post that if you have Empire under NYSHIP it is NOT covered thru Edgepark and be careful they think it is and they ship it to you, then you get denied for it and they bill you for the full amount.

NYSHIP does not ever cover a breastpump even with a letter of medical necessity. Edgepark filed an appeal and I saw the letter it clearly states that NYSHIP does not cover breastpumps in any way

Hope this helps someone else
