Public or Private?
When your kids enter Kindergarten will they be going to public or private school? Why?
I'm still not sure what I'm going to do.

Re: Public or Private?
Cole is in a private Montessori kindergarten with related services (1:1 TA, resource room, speech, ot). It's the best decision we've ever made.

Re: Public or Private?
(didn't answer why): we didn't agree with the public schools placement recommendation. We've been able to "customize" his education here and give him an awesome start to his school career. I feel like the parents have a lot more involvement in a private setting - excellent communication, they welcome coles private therapist in to observe anytime, etc. Added bonus: we've really shown our district's cse committee how serious we are about his education. They thought we were bluffing when we said we would take him out of district if they couldn't accomodate him.

Re: Public or Private?
DC will go where we feel will be the best placement.
We are staying open minded because I don't want to be "lured" to put DC back mainstream if I know DC is not ready.

Thank you. That is exactly how I feel. Unfortunately the private schools near us don't seem to be very "special needs" friendly.
St. Pats in Bay Shore told us that their school was for "advanced" children. Our priest said he would make sure Lance could attend but I'm not sure how I feel about the school after that.
OLL in West Islip. I'm pretty sure the principal is the anti-christ.
So now I have to look in other districts which means Lance won't have any friends close to our area. Or I can give public school a try and see how it goes.

Re: Public or Private?
My brother has autism and went through your school district. Had an AWESOME experience in elementary school (this was at Brook Ave and South Country). My mother's biggest struggle was with the Middle School.

Re: Public or Private?
Not sure yet. We will be looking into the elementary school in my district real soon. I want to observe it before I make a decision.

Re: Public or Private?
We used to live in West Islip. I agree about OLL. What about ST. Peter's in Bayshore? I heard it is an excellent school.

Re: Public or Private?
Thanks. I forgot about St. Peters. I'll look into it. I'm pretty sure they don't allow services to be given in school, (like SEIT) but I'm not even sure he'll be getting them.
ETA: I just called them, they do allow services. The woman I spoke to was so nice.

I've heard good things about st peters! FM/call if you need any info about going out of district for services and such.
