Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
both my parents and ILs have keys to our house. they would NEVER EVER come over without calling first. we're very lucky in that way that they are very respectful of us and our home. we also have keys to their homes. i think it's really important to have a spare key and i wouldn't trust anyone more with my keys than my parents and ILs.
eta: come to think of it, even though my mom has keys, she will leave food/mail/whatever on our front porch. none of them would go in without us asking them to.

Both our mothers have keys to the house. Both our mothers would NEVER come into our house without telling us first. We gave them keys, incase we needed them for an emergency with ds. They woukd never over step their boundries.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
My mom has a key, but always calls first since she's terrified of our alarm system and doesn't want to set it off.
My ILs live OOS, no need for them to have one.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
Yup, my dad & MIL & FIL have a set as well as SIL who lives in the same town. They don't use it just to pop in or something. They have them in case we get locked out (though we have a spare anyway) or if they come to check on our cats if we go away or something. Never an issue.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
Yes my IL's have a key, they are a few blocks away. They leave them at their house, it's good if we get locked out, alarm goes off and we r not close by they are the next to be called. They would never come here for no reason or use it when we are here, they still ring the bell. My neighbor also has a key for an emergency or I get locked out. I have a key to my IL's house also

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
My ILs live 3 miles away and have a set of keys. It is useful when we're away and they take in our mail for us. They never, ever pop in unannounced or use the keys for any reason than our request.
My parents, who live in SI, also have a set of keys...I have no idea why, b/c they never pop in from that distance.
We have my SIL & BIL's keys. They live two towns over. We've never used them, and won't unless asked to do so.

My parents have keys to our apartment but they are technically our landlords. Our apartment is over their detached garage.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
My in-laws live 2 hours away, and rarely visit, so it wouldn't really make sense for them to have keys. My parents live 35 minutes away are rarely visit, so it wouldn't make sense for them to have keys either. If they lived near, I would probably give them spare keys in case I locked myself out, but I would still expect them to knock when they stopped by. I don't like people just walking into my house unannounced.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
we never use the front door... haven't since we moved to NJ
Both my parents and IL's have our garage door programed in their car
My parents live around the block and watch DS. Plus, they're very respectful. They do come over a lot, but we always know AND they always drop stuff off for us so it works out in our favor
IL's live further and will come through the garage, but we know when they're coming b/c it's planned ahead of time.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
Both sets of parents have....they are not intrusive, but b/c I have set limits...especially with the inlaws, who feel that my BIL and SIL's home is theres and go and come as they want. I always tell DH to remind his parents to call also if they are stoping over

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
Neither my ILs nor my parents have a set. Although DH and I have discussed giving a set to my parents (ILs are OOT) in case we get locked out. Our 83 year old upstairs neighbor has a copy of our key but she often does not hear the bell.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
My parents live @ 6 blocks from us. They have a set for if we get locked out. It has only been used once when I locked myself out
My parents would never just come over and open up and come in. I honestly would not really care but they wouldn't seems odd for anyone to do that IMO.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
I would not give my parents a set of keys to our house, because they would be likely to abuse it.
My ILs have a set, and I think they've used them once or twice to come let the dog out while we were gone all day. I'm fine with them having them.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
Both sets of parents have a set of keys but they live out of state. We did it more so that when they come into town they can just let themselves in if we are at work when they get there and so they can come and go during their visits.
My BFF also has a set, she lives around the corner and that is more in case of emergency.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home
My inlaws have a key. So does my parents, my sister, and my brother. They also have keys to the cars and shed.
My inlaws live in NJ and have family out here so it's an open door policy if they want to come and stay, etc. The same for us in their home.
My brother has a rental property out here so if he needs to stop in and use the bathroom, get something to eat/drink, he can.
I'm very chicken little, so I want my family to feel like they have someplace to go/turn to if they need it. Or if (God forbid) something horrific should happen with one or both of us and the family needs access to documents in the house, the pets, etc.
