Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

They have our keys and we have theirs.

We are respectful of them, and they are respectful of us. We have no issues.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

My parents do, but they live close and help us out a lot. If we're going to be out a long time my dad will come and let the dog out, or if we're away they'll pick up the mail.
His parents live about 30 minutes away, so no need (and I dodged a bullet, MIL has NO boundaries and usually calls when she's already enroute)

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

My parents are dead. My mom did have her own key. My in laws do not have keys or alarm code.

Both of my sisters and one of my nephews have keys and alarm codes.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

We are living with my parents now, so we have THEIR house keyChat Icon

In our condo, my parents had keys because there were times when they would bring DD home and bathe her before I came home from work (and maybe DH was away on business) or maybe my dad would be painting something for us or fixing something.

They never abused the key and would only use it if necessary. The only time my mom used her key when I was home was when DD was an infant and I was nursing a lot and she would let herself in so I didn't have to run to the door.

As for IL's, they don't live in this country now, but before they moved, they never had a key. I think they would have been far too comfortable coming over. If the front door wasn't locked, MIL would walk right in without knockingChat Icon

When they have come to visit, though, we gave them a spare so they could come and go as they pleased.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

My mother has a key. She lives 5 minutes away and DH and I have been known to lock ourselves out. So it is helpful..also helpful for when she has DD and wants to come back to our house or whatever. She would never ever come in without asking us first though.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

I am not sure if my in laws have a key. I think they do or did but they live about 40 minutes away. If they have one, they've never used it. My parents live about an hour away and they don't have a key. My brother has a key because he lives about 10ish minutes away. I love that he has a key because he takes care of my bird when I go on vacation and a few times he came to take the dog out when we had to go somewhere for a long time.

My parents, ILs, and brother all have a key to our house. There have been no problems. No one has ever come in without our knowing.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

Sort of....

We live upstairs from my IL's so they do have access to our apartment from downstairs. However, I don't believe they have a key to our separate entrance.

If our parents lived closer, I would give them a key. Right now, they are both 3 hours away so it has never been addressed.

MIL knows where the secret key is because she looks in on the dog sometimes, but our families respect boundaries. it would be different if they didn't.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

My parents have a spare set, but not my in laws I do not want them having a key. I know my parents would never use that key. We also give my cousin a key so she can come by whenever we go away, she is in college and she uses that as a time to get away from her own family, they live in a smalll house.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

No lines have been crossed when we lived in the apartment.

Now that we bought my parent's house my brother has used his key (never unexpected thought). We want to change the locks and then give him a key so he knows it's our house now.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

both sets of parents can get into our house. We've never had any issues although closest one is still 20 minutes away so it's not like she would just drop in randomly. I usually know when she is coming although I wouldn't mind if she stopped by if she was in the neighborhood and we weren't home.

Re: Ques regarding family access to your home

my mother has a key to our apt but thats bc she lives right upstairs.
she never comes down here by herself. only if she has stuff in our fridge or needs something that i have of hers. we really dont mind her having a key, but none of our other parents have a key bc they seriously, NEVER come over.
